We are a mother daughter team working together to support families during the transition to life with a new baby. We love that we are able to offer something unique to our in-person clients in the Hampton Roads area and our virtual clients all over the US. I, Laurie Ann, am a certified Postpartum Doula. For more than 20 years I have been passionate about serving moms. My goal is to give the new family the confidence to parent; working myself out of a job. I like to say, don’t doula this alone; women need other women especially after giving birth. As a caring professional, I share techniques, tools, and personalized recommendations, to support families emotionally and physically as they transition to life with a newborn. Dani is a new mom herself with a 3 year old daughter and infant son. She has been able to really connect with our clients because she has recently (and currently) been in their shoes. We are also proud to be up to date on our product and vendor recommendations because we have personally utilized these products and services. We are better together! This is Mothering the Mother in the Fourth Trimester.

With my first child (see above review), I called LAF (Laurie Ann and Dani) in a panic because breastfeeding was off to a dumpster fire start. Due solely to their coaching, my breastfeeding journey quickly turned around. I breastfed my daughter for 10 months and could not have had a better experience – both physically and mentally. When I found out I was pregnant with my second (the day before my daughter’s first birthday) LAF was one of the first to know (because I wanted them on my team again for round 2!) I knew that the second time around would be a bit different because my husband was in the middle of a deployment cycle. He got home from being gone for six weeks one week prior to me giving birth and will leave again (for 7+ months) very soon. I told Laurie Ann and Dani that I not only wanted to start strong with breastfeeding but wanted to build a large storage supply early on so that the pressure was off a bit when he deployed. Six weeks postpartum, I have 750+ ounces of breastmilk stored due to the plan that LAF put in place (in addition to feeding my baby girl who is growing faster than her growth curve!) The Elvie Curve made collecting this much breastmilk possible – this product was not available with my first daughter, and I could not recommend it more! LAF is a MUST if you are a first, second, third+ time mom in the Hampton Roads area. Seriously – I refer to them as my Fairy Godmothers. So incredibly thankful for their mentorship and love!

As a doula, I will offer emotional, physical, and informational support, helping to alleviate the fears, anxieties, and traumas that often accompany pregnancy and childbirth. I will advocate for their autonomy, dignity, and human rights, ensuring that their voices are amplified and their choices respected. My goal is not only to provide exceptional care but also to help dismantle the systemic barriers that perpetuate health inequities. There truly aren’t enough words for me to express how incredibly grateful I am to Meredith for her postpartum care after I had my second son. With my husband about to deploy she was a real lifesaver with all the overwhelming parts of the newborn stage, while I was also trying to juggle my very needy three year old. She was incredibly reliable and beyond helpful, from helping me with engorgement and breastfeeding concerns to being the only person who could get my baby to take a bottle, she was amazing! Additionally her support for me in terms of things like folding laundry, changing the crib sheet, making sure we had enough diapers, was. Beyond incredible. I am so grateful to her for helping me through this life transition and will definitely be calling on her again if we have a third baby. She is an angel!

Shantella was great throughout the process of my pregnancy. She made it much easier physically, mentally and emotionally! We met a little later into my pregnancy but she stepped up & made me comfortable as ever in every way possible! During my labor she was there the whole way, never left my side and she talked & comforted me through the entire delivery 😭 now that we’re home she’s been doing visits, being a BIG help and just making sure my baby and I are okay. She’s been a very important piece to my puzzle and I’m so grateful for her! Thanks Shantella, I’ll definitely be recommending you to everyone I know love !!!

Greetings, Bornbir family, I’m Alexis, a full-spectrum community doula and the founder of Mama Umi Doula Services & Reproductive Health Education. Welcome to my little corner of Bornbir! My passion for birthwork runs deep. I’ve had the privilege of working as a patient care technician in postpartum and labor & delivery hospital units, supporting families from all walks of life. While I valued learning from healthcare providers, I also witnessed firsthand how these systems—rooted in oppression and racism—too often fail black, brown, and indigenous BIPOC) birthing people. Beyond the hospital setting, I’ve served as a midwife’s assistant in a small home birth practice in Elizabeth City, NC, supporting families who desired a different birthing experience. I have also volunteered as a doula through a community doula network, offering care to birthing people in need, including teenagers, individuals struggling with substance abuse, and single parents facing financial barriers. I believe that all birthing people deserve options, autonomy, and care that honors their lived experiences—whether in a hospital, at home, or anywhere in between. My work is deeply rooted in love, revolutionary joy, transformation, creativity, and ancestral healing. As your doula and community sister, my mission is to create a safe, affirming space where you feel empowered, informed, and deeply supported in every decision you make. I offer: ✨ Holistic birth & postpartum support ✨ Reproductive health education ✨ Advocacy for accessible & equitable care If my approach aligns with what you envision for your journey, let’s connect! I’d love to support you in whatever way feels right for you. Book a consultation, and let’s build together. Much love and looking forward to meeting you! Alexis | Mama Umi Doula Services

I can’t say enough about how incredible Alexis was throughout my birthing journey. After experiencing a stillbirth last year due to a medical error, I was filled with anxiety and fear about giving birth again. Alexis was a true blessing—empathetic, patient, and deeply in tune with my needs. She protected the energy of my birth, creating a space that was safe, intimate, and centered around my healing. She worked seamlessly with my midwife, and I am so grateful she was part of welcoming my rainbow baby into the world. As a first-time mom, I had so many questions and concerns, especially when it came to breastfeeding and caring for my daughter. Alexis was so patient, offering engaging and knowledgeable advice while making sure I felt confident in my ability to care for my baby. She even involved my husband in the process, which meant so much to both of us. One of the most memorable parts of my experience was how Alexis used holistic practices to make labor more bearable. She guided me through a visual breakdown to manage the pain of my contractions and created a peaceful environment with essential oils and body oils. Her homemade herbal teas, postpartum bath soaks, and pad sickles were total game changers for my recovery, especially for healing my second-degree tear. Alexis also reminded me of the importance of self-care, even after the birth. Her support allowed me to rest and truly focus on my healing. Her services were incredibly affordable, and she worked with us to create a payment plan that fit our budget. For anyone looking for a doula who is compassionate, culturally aware, and spiritually connected, Alexis is meant for this work. She was more than a doula—she was a vital part of my birth village. I genuinely don't know where I would be without her. I feel so blessed to have had her on my postpartum team, and I highly recommend her to any birthing person looking for an empowered, equitable, and heart-centered experience.

Hi mama! I’m Arabella a doulatog (doula + photographer.) I believe birth is sacred — not just a medical event, but a deeply personal, spiritual, and transformative experience. Every woman carries the wisdom to birth within her. My role is not to direct or manage your experience, but to gently support you as you listen to your body, trust your instincts, and move through birth in your own powerful way. I believe in honoring birth as a physiological and primal process — one that thrives with movement, safety, warmth, and love. I draw on nature-based wisdom, traditional postpartum care, and hands-on comfort measures to create a cocoon of support where you can soften and surrender. Whether you're birthing at home, in a hospital, or somewhere in between, I center your voice, your values, and your vision. Birth is not something to be feared or controlled — it’s something to be witnessed, held, and honored. I walk alongside you — offering calm, steady presence, holistic care, and heart-led advocacy — so you never feel alone on this journey.
