While photographing my first home birth in Las Vegas, Nevada in 2014, I naturally found myself playing the role of doula between shots. I signed up for official training the next day and never looked back. Soon after doula training, I earned a Certification in Lactation Counseling (CLC) and began helping mothers struggling with feeding issues. I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of babies in various settings, with varying feeding challenges, and a wide range of feeding goals. Phelicia welcomes families of all dynamics, ethnicities, and backgrounds, supporting births at home, in-hospital, medicated or unmedicated, planned, and unplanned cesareans.

Phelicia is an incredible and supportive doula! We loved having her by our side antepartum, during labor and postpartum. She is knowledgeable, professional and kind. Our delivery ended up quicker than expected and she made it to the hospital in record time and supported us through a unique experience! We highly recommend hiring Phelicia - it was a wonderful experience.

I had the privilege of having Nia support me through two of the most emotionally and physically challenging experiences of my life: my third labor and delivery in 2023, and a couple years after a very tough medical abortion. In both situations, her presence, care, and advocacy made all the difference. During my labor and delivery, Nia was incredibly comforting and attentive. She advocated for me in the hospital when I needed support, helped communicate my needs, and made sure I felt safe and heard throughout the entire process. Her calm, grounded energy kept me centered, and her encouragement helped me get through some of the toughest moments. When I later faced a medical abortion, Nia remained just as supportive. She accompanied me to my appointments, drove me to the procedure, stayed by my side the entire time, and made sure I wasn’t alone emotionally or physically. Afterward, she went above and beyond, coming home with me, bringing me tea and soup, and providing the comfort and reassurance I truly needed. Her compassion, reliability, and unconditional support were a 10/10. I genuinely would not have wanted anyone else by my side. Nia is someone who shows up fully, advocates fiercely, and cares deeply. I am incredibly grateful for her.

I am passionate about my work as a doula, knowing that doulas make a real difference in the community. I truly enjoy supporting families and ensuring they receive the care they deserve. I would be honored to help support your family during your postpartum period!

We hired Naomi as i postpartum doula in January throughout the 12 weeks, Naomi consistently demonstrated a deep understanding of the needs of both the newborn and the new parents. Her ability to create a calm and comforting environment during the nighttime hours allowed my partner and I to get the essential rest we needed to navigate the challenges of early parenthood. Naomi's knowledge of postpartum recovery, breastfeeding support, and soothing techniques for infants was very useful to us. Naomi's professionalism, punctuality, and reliability was evident throughout the entire duration of her service. She communicated effectively, ensuring that we were always on the same page regarding our daughter's care and any specific concerns or preferences we had. In summary, I cannot speak highly enough of Naomi and her outstanding skills as a postpartum doula. We’d be happy to recommend Naomi to anyone in need of support during there postpartum journey!

Hello. My name is Shanaée Walker, proud owner of Rooted in Birth located in the DMV area. I’m a certified birth and postpartum doula with specialized experience supporting twin pregnancies and families welcoming premature infants. I’m also a certified placenta encapsulation specialist and a trained newborn care specialist, offering comprehensive, evidence-based support during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. As a military spouse and a mom of three, I understand the importance of adaptability, compassion, and strong support systems. My passion is walking alongside families during one of life’s most transformative seasons, providing calm, informed, and nurturing care every step of the way.

Recent review

Our experience with Shanaée was everything we were hoping for and more. She supported us before, during, and after birth. Before birth, she met with us to create our birth plan and to answer our burning questions as our due date neared. She followed our lead at every step And listened authentically, making sure that our birth plan felt like “ours” while also guiding us towards questions and topics we didn’t know to ask! When I was induced 3 weeks early, Shanaée brought a sense of calm and direction to navigating contractions with movement, counter pressure, and distraction (hello birth comb, my best friend) techniques. She worked seamlessly with our medical team, serving as amplification for my voice when needed (always following my lead and my wishes as they changed throughout my unexpected induction process). She even supported the first latch after birth! She came over the day after we returned from the hospital with postpartum support, a listening ear, and an extra set of hands to guide us in starting off on the right foot! I highly recommend Shanaée, she will forever be one of the main reasons I will look back on my birth experience and feel empowered rather than helpless, and brave rather than scared.

I loved working with Megan. She helped care for our now 4 month old second child Rowan recently for about 2 months. She was kind as well as very helpful and always asking what she could do to make things easier. She was a great listening ear for all the things baby, birth, and beyond. She mostly helped us with infant care, bottle and pump part washing, laundry, and making snacks, like muffins. The resources she shared with me as print outs I kept on our fridge because they were so helpful. She also had recommendations for other providers, like a pelvic floor therapist. I honestly felt like I was having a friend or family come hang out and watch the family after a visit or two. All in all, highly recommend working with her! I don't have any complaints, truly. I will only say I wish I had hired her sooner, knowing what I know now. It was vital for me having someone who cared about my mental health just as much as my new baby, especially this second time around. Highly recommend working with her!

In addition to my pursuit of becoming a medical doctor, I also enjoy spending time with children and investing into the next generation. Growing up I spent a lot of time watching young children; I don't recall a time when I wasn't holding someone's baby. As an adult, I enjoy spening time with my nieces, nephews, and godchildren. My childcare experiences includes my pediatric rotation, community sevice, and paid employment via care.com, sittercity.com and nannylane.com. My pediatric rotation gave me the medical background for caring for children from first days of life to adolescence. Additionally, I have spent the last 3 years nannying and volunteering with infants and toddlers within the foster care system. If I can be of service, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I look forward to working with you and your family!

"It was all a dream!" Literally! My journey to doula-hood started with a dream from the Lord of me giving birth on my mom's kitchen floor while she knelt behind me to support and assist me through it all. I highly recommend Liv. They were so helpful postpartum for me and my baby. Having a NICU baby was difficult, but Liv was there to help. I felt confident taking a nap or showering and leaving my baby with them. They continued to help me through the postpartum process as a first time mom who also had a c-section. Liv had plenty of advice and tips and trick to help me. I felt comfortable asking all my question. It was nice to have someone knowledgeable to talk. I cannot recommend them enough. I will definitely be calling Liv for my next baby!

Hey there, I’m Ni’Sheerer! I’m the kind of doula who believes birth isn’t just about bringing a baby into the world—it’s about honoring the whole journey, from the first little flutter to those sweet (and sometimes sleepy) postpartum snuggles. My philosophy is simple: every family deserves support that’s both knowledgeable and heart-centered. I combine evidence-based care with a sprinkle of intuition, a lot of listening, and the belief that your birth story should feel empowering, not overwhelming. I’m here to be your cheerleader, your extra set of hands, and sometimes even your snack-fetching, water-refilling, “you’ve got this” voice when things get real. I see birth as a partnership—your body, your baby, your choices—my role is to support and protect that space. Whether it’s helping you find your breath during labor, keeping you company in those quiet postpartum hours, or making sure you get that much-needed nap, I’m all about creating an environment where you feel safe, heard, and cared for. Birth is powerful, parenting is brave, and I’m honored to walk beside you in it all.
