I plan to give birth at my home. I am unsure about my budget, since I don't know what this type of support costs. I would like to give birth at home, with my partner, a doula and a midwife. I would like a woman to assist me in birthing. I would like a natural, peaceful birth.

I will be having the baby at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital, but I have always been interested in the option of a home birth, I haven’t fully decided. A budget is undecided since I am not sure what a midwife or doula typically costs. I am very early so I don’t have a birth plan just yet, but I do know that I think it’s important to have an additional support with me to advocate for what I will want. My choices may seem controversial to medical personnel.

I have also applied for a travel extension, which will allow my prenatal and delivery expenses to be covered under my husband’s health card (he is a PR holder). While I have hypothyroidism, it has been well-managed with medication for the past five years. I plan to give birth at home and would like to hire a midwife or possibly two midwives to support me throughout the process. My goal is to have a calm, natural birth in a familiar and comfortable environment. I am looking for experienced, licensed midwives who are supportive of unmedicated home births and who can provide prenatal, birth, and postpartum care. My estimated budget for the entire maternity care experience, including prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, and postpartum care, is around $5,000 to $7,000. I’m open to discussing payment plans or sliding scale options if available. For my birth plan, I would like a low-intervention, holistic approach. I want the freedom to move around, eat and drink during labor, and use comfort measures such as water immersion, massage, and breathing techniques. I would prefer minimal cervical checks and no routine interventions unless absolutely necessary for the safety of me or the baby. I also want to delay cord clamping and have immediate skin-to-skin contact after birth. Breastfeeding support in the first hours postpartum is important to me as well.

I am wanting to do a home water birth but am not opposed to a hospital birth as I had that with my first child. My ideal birth plan is to labour and give birth in my home but if needed and the pain is to much then a hospital birth with pain management is also an option
