About me

Jamie Owens is a Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) since 2012 and a Registered Nurse specializing in Women's Health since 2008. Jamie went to Syracuse University where she majored in Women's Studies and Studio Art. She then went on to an accelerated (BSN) Nursing Program at Quinnipiac University. Jamie has extensive experience working with breastfeeding/chestfeeding families. She worked at New York Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell as an RN on the Postpartum Unit for five and a half years and then on the Labor and Delivery Unit for a year and a half. She has been seeing patients privately at their homes for lactation consulting since she received her certificate in 2012. She left the hospital work-life in December of 2015 once she gave birth to her baby girl. After taking 11 months off to be with her baby, she began her private practice in Jersey City and surrounding areas. Jamie saw clients in their home and taught breastfeeding workshops. Jamie and her family moved to Denville NJ in April of 2017 where she has continued her lactation consulting practice and breastfeeding workshops. Jamie contributed as a "breastfeeding expert" and freelance writer for the website www.mother.ly. Jamie is also a lactation practitioner for the website/app Maven. Jamie has always had a passion for women's health and advocacy. After breastfeeding her own two children for a total of 5.5 years, her love and dedication to breastfeeding only got stronger. She is also a LGBTQI+ ally and loves to assist all kinds of families in their breastfeeding/chestfeeding journeys. She is filled with energy and passion and will do whatever it takes to make her clients feel comfortable, confident, and cared for.

Service introduction

Jamie provides lactation consulting home visits and prenatal breast/chest feeding classes. She also provides both virtually. During a home visit, Jamie observes an entire feeding, using gentle hands-on assistance with latch and positioning, watches and discusses function of latch, discusses medical history including labor and delivery and any breastfeeding history. She examines your baby's oral anatomy and assesses your breasts/chest. Jamie brings a professional infant scale (Marsden 300) to do weighted feedings if needed. She assists and helps with pumps, flange sizing, and/or bottles, if requested. Together, you will problem solve, try out strategies, techniques, and positions that may be helpful for both mama and baby, and create a plan that everyone is comfortable with. Within 24 hours, the family will receive an email detailing the home visit and the care plan. Jamie likes to maintain the relationship with you by making sure you are feeling more confident and that the plan you created together is working well for you and the baby. Jamie does not accept insurance but does provide a superbill to send into insurance for reimbursement. A home visit is usually about 1-2 hours, but is based on individual needs of the families. Prenatal Breast/chest feeding classes can take place in the comfort of your home or virtually. Jamie's prenatal breastfeeding/chestfeeding workshops are for expectant parents (including partner/support person) at any point in their pregnancy but recommended 28+ weeks. Partners or a support person are encouraged to come! The class will give expectant parents all the breastfeeding/chestfeeding information they will need to feel prepared for when their baby comes Earth-side and continued information and support throughout their journey. Jamie's class is a unique perspective because of her background. She has the knowledge coming from being an L&D nurse where she will inform you of the immediate transition to extrauterine life, the most important ways to start the feeding journey off right, and expectations on the different parts of the hospital unit. She has the experience of also being a postpartum nurse, where she has the inside view and hands on experience of helping thousands of moms and infants breastfeed in the first few days of the baby's life. Jamie also has her own personal experience nursing her 2 children. The class runs about 1.5-2 hours and Jamie brings supplies. Jamie is also a photographer who specializes in family and newborn lifestyle work.
