Hello everyone! My name is Ashanti Wilson Hale of The Balanced Birth worker. I am a state certified birth and postpartum doula serving the Hampton Roads community. I became a doula due to my own pregnancy experience, which led to mistreatment in hospitals, and an eventual awareness to the hardships woman, especially black woman, face giving birth in this country. Outside of doula work, I am a nutritionist assistant for WIC because I believe in the importance of eating healthy and how that can better many aspects of our lives. In my free time, I love to dance, write poetry, write music, spend time with family, and go on nature walks with my fiancé. It would be my honor to serve you and your family!

Ashanti was absolutely amazing! She was so knowledgeable and helpful, and she really helped me to feel confident and supported during and after my pregnancy.

I’m a Coastal Virginia mama with a deep love for supporting families. My journey started as a nanny, caring for little ones and walking alongside parents through the early years. That experience sparked a dream—to one day become a doula and support mothers through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Until then, I’m pouring my heart into capturing the real, raw, and beautifully messy moments of motherhood. From growing bellies to tiny fingers wrapped around yours, I’m here to tell your story—start to finish.

As a doula, I will offer emotional, physical, and informational support, helping to alleviate the fears, anxieties, and traumas that often accompany pregnancy and childbirth. I will advocate for their autonomy, dignity, and human rights, ensuring that their voices are amplified and their choices respected. My goal is not only to provide exceptional care but also to help dismantle the systemic barriers that perpetuate health inequities. I believe that every Black woman deserves to experience a positive, transformative birth experience that leaves her feeling empowered, confident, and connected to her body and her baby.

We are a mother daughter team working together to support families during the transition to life with a new baby. We love that we are able to offer something unique to our in-person clients in the Hampton Roads area and our virtual clients all over the US. I, Laurie Ann, am a certified Postpartum Doula. For more than 20 years I have been passionate about serving moms. My goal is to give the new family the confidence to parent; working myself out of a job. I like to say, don’t doula this alone; women need other women especially after giving birth. As a caring professional, I share techniques, tools, and personalized recommendations, to support families emotionally and physically as they transition to life with a newborn. Dani is a new mom herself with a 3 year old daughter and infant son. She has been able to really connect with our clients because she has recently (and currently) been in their shoes. We are also proud to be up to date on our product and vendor recommendations because we have personally utilized these products and services. We are better together! This is Mothering the Mother in the Fourth Trimester.

With my first child (see above review), I called LAF (Laurie Ann and Dani) in a panic because breastfeeding was off to a dumpster fire start. Due solely to their coaching, my breastfeeding journey quickly turned around. I breastfed my daughter for 10 months and could not have had a better experience – both physically and mentally. When I found out I was pregnant with my second (the day before my daughter’s first birthday) LAF was one of the first to know (because I wanted them on my team again for round 2!) I knew that the second time around would be a bit different because my husband was in the middle of a deployment cycle. He got home from being gone for six weeks one week prior to me giving birth and will leave again (for 7+ months) very soon. I told Laurie Ann and Dani that I not only wanted to start strong with breastfeeding but wanted to build a large storage supply early on so that the pressure was off a bit when he deployed. Six weeks postpartum, I have 750+ ounces of breastmilk stored due to the plan that LAF put in place (in addition to feeding my baby girl who is growing faster than her growth curve!) The Elvie Curve made collecting this much breastmilk possible – this product was not available with my first daughter, and I could not recommend it more! LAF is a MUST if you are a first, second, third+ time mom in the Hampton Roads area. Seriously – I refer to them as my Fairy Godmothers. So incredibly thankful for their mentorship and love!

I am a local to Virginia Beach, and although I plan to stay here long term, my heart also has a home in Hawaii where I spent a few years in my twenties. I love to adventure, design, have community and learn new things! I spend 100% of the time being a mother to two absolutely, wildly amazing children, and being a wife to my long-time sweet heart. I have had beautiful home births with both my children and I would love to have more children! My dream is grow a business that not only supports my family, but over all, supports woman and families all of the world so that we as mothers and as families feel the most confident and empowered that we have ever felt as a community, so that we raise generations of parents and children to be self-sufficient, self-thinkers and rooted in love.

There truly aren’t enough words for me to express how incredibly grateful I am to Meredith for her postpartum care after I had my second son. With my husband about to deploy she was a real lifesaver with all the overwhelming parts of the newborn stage, while I was also trying to juggle my very needy three year old. She was incredibly reliable and beyond helpful, from helping me with engorgement and breastfeeding concerns to being the only person who could get my baby to take a bottle, she was amazing! Additionally her support for me in terms of things like folding laundry, changing the crib sheet, making sure we had enough diapers, was. Beyond incredible. I am so grateful to her for helping me through this life transition and will definitely be calling on her again if we have a third baby. She is an angel!

We had the absolute best experience with Tory, and I cannot recommend her highly enough. From the moment she walked into our home, she brought an immediate sense of calm and confidence that we desperately needed. After just one visit, our entire household felt more settled. She didn’t just care for our newborn—she taught me how to care for him with new techniques, hands-on guidance, and so much patience. She showed me how to soothe him, how to read his cues, and how to manage those fussy moments that had felt overwhelming before. Her approach was gentle, practical, and incredibly reassuring. On top of that, both the baby and I were coming down with a cold, and she handled the situation with so much compassion. She showed me how to help a congested newborn, helped me feel more confident in what to watch for, and even let me get much-needed rest. I truly felt cared for as a new mom, not just supported in caring for my baby. If you are looking for someone who brings expertise, calm energy, and genuine care into your home, Tory is absolutely exceptional. One visit made such a meaningful difference for us, and I am so grateful for her. I am excited to work with her again and ensure that I’ve really taken her lessons to heart.
