About me

VANESSA CORY, CD(DONA), (CD)SBD About Vanessa: I am a certified birth doula under DONA and a certified birth and bereavement doula under Stillbirthday Academy®. I’m married to my husband Quinn, and we have four children, Liam, Ainsley, Owen and Harlow. I have served and supported families in the DFW metroplex for 10 years and each birth has made me fall more in love with what I do. I began attending births in July 2012, and have loved every family and every birth I’ve had the privilege of supporting. Each birth is unique and amazing and my hope is that I can help your family feel prepared, informed and supported as you go through the process of bringing a new life into the world. I’ve attended unmedicated, medicated, waterbirths, high risk, induced, cesareans, VBAC, VBAC after multiple cesareans, premature, stillbirth, loss procedures, miscarriage, post loss, sexual abuse survivors, teens, out of state clients, surrogates, same sex couples, in hospital and out of hospital births. I would love to support you in your dream birth, whatever that looks like for you!

Service introduction

Birth is a beautiful thing, but can be stressful if you don’t feel prepared or supported. As a doula, my first and foremost goal is to help you feel supported, loved and prepared. I am willing to do whatever I need to do to help you go into your birth feeling confident. Here are a few things that you can expect from me: You, your partner and I will meet up and get to know each other. This will be just the first of many times we’ll meet before your birth! It’s important to make sure we connect emotionally and that our personalities blend well. Birth is a very intimate time and I want you to feel comfortable with me. If you determine that you would like me to be your doula, we’ll talk through your birth goals. As part of that, we can talk about different options that will help you be confident about your birth plan. The most important thing is that you achieve the type of birth you desire, so I will support the decisions that you make. As you get closer to your due date, I’ll begin helping you learn breathing and relaxation techniques that will greatly help you during labor. As we go through these techniques and you identify which ones feel the best, this will help me know where to start once you begin labor. If you think you are in labor, you can give me a call and I can help you determine if it is true labor. When your labor starts, I can meet you wherever you would like – whether at home, the birthing center or hospital. I will arrive when your contractions are consistent and no more than 5 minutes apart and have stayed that way for at least one hour. This tells me you are in active labor. If it is during your normal sleeping hours I will suggest that you try to sleep as long as possible to avoid overtiring yourself. The more rested and relaxed you are, the faster labor will go. I will never leave your side during labor unless it’s for a quick restroom or snack break. My role is to be there for you, to support you and help you through every step of your labor. After the baby is born, I will stay with you and help you recuperate, inform you of what is going on and help you initiate breastfeeding if that is something you would like. I will stay for a 1-2 hours after you give birth to ensure you are comfortable and have gotten something to eat and drink. As soon as you’re ready, I will visit you in your home to check on you and the baby. Typically this will be within 10 days after the birth. I can also assist with breastfeeding if that is needed. During this visit, we can talk about your birth experience, and I can help you remember details that you might have forgotten. After all, your labor is a special experience that is worth remembering. Beyond this postpartum visit, I will continue to be available to you for questions and support any time.

Vanessa was our doula for all 5 of our children. My husband wasn’t convinced we needed a doula, but after our first was born, he said, “We could not have done that without her!” So she was considered a necessity for the subsequent births. Before birth day, she met with us to discuss our birth plan and goals and how she could help us with that. She taught us what to do for pain management. She involved my husband as much as he wanted/could handle, but she did a significant amount of the pain relief techniques for me. She made sure I was drinking water and always had my cup filled up. She fed me. She reminded me to breathe correctly. She reminded me to “push from your bottom”. She held my hand. She put a cold cloth on my forehead. She knew what I needed when I didn’t. Her presence is calm and kind. For my last birth, my only home birth, she asked in our initial meeting if I had considered catching the baby myself. I told her no, but we decided to discuss what that would look like anyway. The midwife missed that birth. Vanessa made it just in time. I didn’t even know I was pushing, but she knew! She said to my husband,“She’s pushing - we need to get her undressed and in the tub.” She helped me undress and get in the birthing tub and - who knew - I caught my own baby and she was right there with me guiding the process by telling me exactly what to do like we had practiced weeks before. She helped to handle discussing the birth and updates to my midwife on the phone, communicating to us what the midwife needed us to know. She was definitely a source of comfort for all my births, but especially that one! She also does a postpartum visit to check on us and comes full of ideas, contacts, and resources for any postpartum help we need. I cannot recommend her enough. She is such a blessing to our family.
