Midwives to help with birth process avoid medical intervention as much as possible
I want to do a home birth. Not sure on budget for home birth and doula. I want an unmedicated natural as possible birth.
I plan to give birth at Sanford Hospital in Bismarck. During labor and delivery, I’d like a calm, low-stimulus atmosphere with the room kept as quiet as possible, lights dimmed, and no trainees (medical students or residents) present. I prefer no prenatal cervical exams and, during labor, only one cervical check after transition and before pushing. Induction or interventions should occur only if medically necessary—no membrane stripping or premature breaking of waters. I do not want an IV or heplock; if required by policy, I prefer a heparin/saline lock, and no IV antibiotics. Fetal monitoring should be minimal and intermittent rather than continuous. I plan to move freely, avoid lying on my back at any point, change positions about every 30 minutes, and drink fluids as needed. Please do not offer pain medication or an epidural unless I ask. For pushing, I will follow my body’s urge without coaching, with my husband supporting me. I do not want an episiotomy. After birth, I want immediate skin-to-skin with my baby placed on my chest and to begin breastfeeding right away. For placenta delivery, please allow up to two hours for it to deliver naturally, with minimal cord traction/tugging and no Pitocin afterward. For newborn care, I decline Vitamin K, Hepatitis B vaccine, and eye ointment. Our budget is up to 3k.
