Nijah Smith

I am a professional visual artist and certified postpartum doula that was drawn to the world of birthwork due to my natural ability to nurture and connect with young children and their caregivers. I am the daughter of a single mother and a member of a community shaped by diverse family dynamics; I have a deep, personal understanding of the challenges that come with raising a child in complex environments. I want to provide hands-on, practical care while navigating through a challenging, yet rewarding, transitionary period. I offer evidence-backed and culturally rooted healing knowledge to enrich the postpartum experience. My approach to supporting families is rooted in empathy, with an emphasis on helping caregivers exercise their autonomy and find their inner strength.

Nijah Smith was a great doula during my postpartum experience. What stood out the most was how naturally connected she was with my baby girl. She instantly analyzed what she needed, and responded with such calm confidence. Nijah assisted greatly with household tasks, helping me latch, and helping her settle. Because she was so attentive, observant, and proactive with the baby, I actually got to rest—and real rest. I felt safe enough to sleep because I knew my daughter was in good hands. I’m deeply grateful for her, and I would recommend her to any parent who wants someone alert ,gentle, and proactive to support their family.

Hello, I’m Rylee—a doula in training through Doula School Canada, with years of hands-on experience caring for newborns and infants, as well as supporting mothers during deeply vulnerable seasons. My background includes working in a maternal homeless shelter and as a private nanny, where I learned the importance of compassionate, non-judgmental support for both parent and baby. As part of my doula training, I am required to attend three births, including prenatal and postpartum visits. During this time, I am offering my services at a discounted rate—or at no cost if needed—because everyone deserves support during pregnancy, birth, and beyond. As an experienced postpartum support professional with a background in personal support work and early childhood learning, I bring a calm, nurturing presence to families during the early weeks of newborn life. My training and certifications including Postpartum Doula Certification, Infant/Child CPR, Food Handler Certificate, GPA training, and foundational lactation support—allow me to provide safe newborn care, gentle feeding guidance, and practical household support with confidence and ease. I offer both daytime and overnight care, ensuring families receive steady, reliable help whether they need a night nanny to support restful sleep or hands‑on assistance throughout the day. With a strong foundation in early childhood education and tutoring, I also provide homework support for school‑age siblings, helping maintain routines and easing the transition for the whole family. My approach is rooted in cultural sensitivity, patience, and deep respect for each family’s unique rhythms and values. Whether I’m caring for a newborn, supporting early lactation and bottle‑feeding routines, preparing simple nutritious meals, assisting with homework, or helping parents rest and recover, my focus is always on creating a grounded, supportive environment where families feel confident, rested, and truly cared for.

I am a trained birth + postpartum doula. I am also a lactation counselor and health educator originally from NJ, via NYC! I am new to the Rochester Area—I've been primarily a lactation counselor and postpartum doula since 2020, and first got trained with Ancient Song Doula Services in 2018. I attended my first birth in 2018 after 3+ years of health education. My family is from the Dominican Republic, I am fluent in Spanish, and conversational in French after 14 years of studying and understand Brazilian Portuguese a fair amount! I have dedicated my life to birth education and doula work, and hope to one day be a nurse midwife. I have a public health degree, a food handlers license and am about to renew my liability insurance which covers all but home births. I am LGBT competent and have assisted primarily single parents both by choice and by circumstance. I hope to end the birth parent mortality crisis in my lifetime and am so proud to be a doula! I am accepting postpartum and education clients only between now (May 2025) and October 1 2025!

I was drawn to becoming a birth doula because I saw firsthand the difference that informed, loving support can make. Having gone through my own birth trauma, I realized that a little help goes a long way during this tender phase. I also have a passion for breastfeeding and lactation education. I love to support families that are latching, pumping, bottle feeding, donating, etc.

Dearest Kristin, I am writing you to thank you for the gift you have given my family, myself specifically. It was a no brainer investing in a doula for this second pregnancy, and everyone was right - we had no regrets picking you! A clear comfortable contract didn’t prepare me for the support you provided. Though we hired you for post-partum care, you were a support during my very hard pregnancy. You provided me validation, connection, spiritual healing, not to mention the massages my body so desperately needed! Deciding whether to be induced was a huge mountain for us. I was high risk and my body had enough. You helped me understand my decision with love and compassion. You were so flexible with scheduling to respond to my extended hospital stay. You supported me through the phone and I felt safe leaving the hospital to come home to your care. A day with you nourished our family physically and spiritually. We were so shattered from the trauma of the birth and extended stay in the hospital. You supported our sleep, eating, and encouraged ways for us to connect while we were transitioning to a bigger family. Cooking for us, cleaning for us, yoga with my toddler while my husband and I could regroup. Having you for a few overnights helped so much with my healing and recovery. I am so grateful for investing in my recovery and choosing you. Anna
