I am a widowed mother of four children between the ages of 19 and 22 who were born within three years. My first birth was at age 35 with a female physician in rural Maine, who was previously a midwife. I also had a female prenatal and postpartum doula who helped me find my confidence as a new mother. My second birth was a mandatory cesarean for breech & transverse presentation of fraternal male twins at age 38. Although the male physician would not grant requested delayed cord clamping, I was permitted to take the placentas home to plant a tree in honor of the birth. My fourth child was born in my 40th year as a rapid fire VBAC at a freestanding birth center with a midwife and doula in attendance. I have served as a pre-partum and postpartum doula, and am an experienced night nanny with a high success rate with sleep training. I do not adhere to any particular philosophy, serving only to support parents and caregivers with strengthening their own parental instincts. I am Shanna Hinrichs, and my story of community birth began over 20 years ago when I began supporting families as a doula, lactation consultant, and now midwife. I have known I was called to help women bring their babies earthside since I was a young child. In my case, my passion for birth work stems from personal experience as a wife and mother of two beautiful souls. The miraculous and empowering births I experienced sparked within me a desire to guide and support others on their own journeys through pregnancy and childbirth. However, my path to becoming a birth doula was not without obstacles. Before conceiving my oldest, I faced some difficult pregnancy losses. To help heal and cope with these losses, I turned to writing and expressed my feelings through a love letter or poem dedicated to my future rainbow baby. This experience not only brought me solace, but also deepened my understanding and empathy for other women facing similar struggles.
