Sarah was thrown into birth work in 2015 when her best friend went into preterm labor while her support team was out of town. Sarah sprung into action, supported her friend, and discovered that birth work is where she belongs! She subsequently trained with Prodoula and DONA International, certified through DONA, and is now honored to join families in this life changing process and support them within a health system that can be hard to navigate. She is even more invested in birth work after giving birth to her daughter in 2021. Her compassion, calm presence, and flexible personality add to her skills as a doula. Originally trained as an artist, Sarah’s creativity and observation skills help her attune to her clients’ needs and work well alongside their care providers. She lives in Hyde Park and loves yoga, ceramics, and taking advantage of great live music in Chicago.

I’m Sarah Palmer, a certified DONA doula, serving families in person throughout Chicago, and virtually around the world. I offer personalized birth support, emotional guidance, and physical comfort measures designed to help you feel confident and cared for — whether you’re planning a hospital birth, birth center birth, home birth, medicated or unmedicated experience. I have supported pregnancy loss, planned and unplanned cesareans, unmedicated and medicated births, VBACs, clients age 26-50, LGBT+ families, single-parent families, clients who used IVF to conceive, clients with high-risk pregnancies, and clients with known fetal development differences. I empower clients with evidence-based information and guidance to make informed choices. My goal is to help clients navigate their journey with confidence and support.
I can't recommend Sarah enough. She was a calm and steady presence in the midst of a very long birth (my first). She was an incredible support and advocate - before labor began and through to the birth. Not only was she a support for me, she was also a support for my husband - she held both of us emotionally (and me literally!) Just recently, I attended one of her birth art workshops. I'm still processing everything she led us through in the best way. It was a powerful way to work through my own fertility journey, pregnancy, and birth. She is an incredible facilitator and support. I am so grateful she has been on this journey with me and our family will absolutely be working with Sarah again when the next time comes.

Sarah was my doula when I gave birth to my first baby. She is deeply caring, thoughtful, and steady; she is also highly knowledgeable about the medical and institutional aspects of pregnancy and labor. Sarah provided prenatal education to my partner and me and was available to answer questions during my pregnancy, which was very helpful and reassuring. She helped us develop a thorough and customized (yet succinct!) birth preferences sheet that was effective with hospital staff and successfully created the hospital environment I wanted. She created a peaceful environment for laboring at home and provided many hours of grounding and unwavering labor support at the hospital. Sarah helped me achieve the birth I'd prepared for; I highly recommend working with her!

Sarah is an exceptional doula and person! She is knowledgeable, compassionate, and brings a calming presence to a situation full of high emotions. My husband and I trusted her fully and she supported both of us during the whole pregnancy and birth process. I’m not sure I could’ve done this without her!

Palmer Doula’s help was calming and empowering for my husband and me. She used visuals and demonstrations to make sure we both understood the content even though we were meeting virtually. She was patient and non judgmental. She heard all our thoughts worries and concerns. With her help I was able to think through the information she presented and choose what kind of birth I wanted. With Palmer’s guidance My husband understood what I wanted and what we were allowed to ask for from doctors and midwives. He was empowered to advocate for me and make sure my needs were met during labor and delivery even when we were met with some push back. Her support meant so much to us

My wife and I are so incredibly grateful to have had Sarah Palmer as our Doula during the birth of our first child. She is extremely intelligent both medically as well as emotionally, and that played a major role in us feeling support throughout a very long and difficult birth process. Speaking of support, Sarah is also incredibly fit and literally supported my wife through the majority of her contractions for 2 days! As we grow our family, we absolutely want to have the privilege of working with Sarah again!

Sarah was our doula and stayed with us for probably close to thirty hours on the day I delivered! She is kind, thoughtful, nurturing and nonjudgmental. We loved working with her and feel like she has become part of our family ❤️

Sarah Palmer was the doula for my wife when she gave birth to our first child. She is an excellent doula; she knows the pregnancy and birth process inside and out (including how hospitals work, and what you have to do to get what you need in them). She is empathetic, calm, and caring. She has a remarkable capacity for presence over long periods of time. She's sensitive to the wide diversity of birthing experiences and adapts herself to the individual needs of the person she's working with. She's also very thoughtful about the role of the birth partner. I would extremely highly recommend her as a doula, as would my wife.

Sarah is a positive and helpful presence. She always made herself available at any time of day or night for our questions or concerns and in labor and delivery really demonstrated the selflessness that one would hope for in that situation. Without inserting herself obtrusively into the doctor's and nurse's way, Sarah was my partner's most constant source of physical comfort and support for 24 hours, from the moment we called her at 4am when the water broke to 24 hours later when the baby was delivered.

Sarah is a wonderful doula, and a wonderful person. She made me and my partner feel comfortable, cared for, and calm, and was a necessary and valued translator between us and the hospital staff. She has helped us with both of our babies, and we feel very grateful for her. She made the birth experiences so supportive and positive!l.

As a first time parent, not knowing what to expect, Sarah was an invaluable resource and support through the end of my pregnancy, birth, and even now (two months postpartum). Sarah's knowledge and expertise helped me avoid unnecessary interventions and her calm demeanor and steady guidance throughout labor and delivery was a boon not only for me but for my husband, as well. Sarah helped me have the kind of birth experience I didn't even know I wanted! I cannot recommend her strongly enough.
