What's the Cost of Hiring a Midwife in Winnipeg, MB?

In Winnipeg, MB, midwifery care is generally covered by Manitoba Health when provided by a registered midwife, so there is usually no direct out-of-pocket cost for prenatal care, labour and birth support, and postpartum follow-up; if someone chooses to hire an independent doula instead, that is separate from a midwife and typically costs about C$800 to C$1,500 depending on services and experience.

The cost of a midwife in Winnipeg, MB can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Midwife

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who work in hospital settings may have different pricing than Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) who attend home births or birth center deliveries.

  • Birth Setting

Hospital births with a midwife typically cost less out-of-pocket when covered by insurance, while home births and birth center deliveries may have different fee structures.

  • Scope of Services

Many midwives offer comprehensive packages that include prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, and postpartum care, which can affect the overall cost.

  • Insurance Coverage

In Winnipeg, Manitoba, midwifery care is generally covered by Manitoba Health when provided by a registered midwife, so there is usually no direct cost to the patient for prenatal care, labour and birth, and postpartum care within the publicly funded system; however, coverage can vary for services outside standard insured care, such as private classes, doulas, or certain supplies, and if you use a privately paid provider or non-covered service, private health insurance may or may not reimburse part of the cost depending on your plan.

  • Experience and Specialization

Midwives with extensive experience, additional certifications, or specializations such as VBAC support or water birth may charge higher rates.

  • Geographic Location

Midwifery costs can vary based on the cost of living and demand for midwifery services in your specific area.

When considering hiring a midwife in Winnipeg, MB, it's advisable to research and interview several midwives to find one who aligns with your birth plan, preferences, and budget. During consultations, you can discuss their specific services, insurance acceptance, and pricing structure to ensure you have a clear understanding of what is included and the associated costs.

Hello! As a Registered Nurse, along with Birth and Postpartum Doula, I have been attending hospital maternity units, birthing centres and home births for 25 years. It is my own birth story with my oldest son, as well as the story of many other women that I have been honoured to journey along with over these many years, which is the reason that I founded Blessed Beginnings for Mama & Me Nursing. So, mothers, their partners and babes will feel loved, cared for and supported. I will also be your best friend, safety net and cheerleader during your labour & delivery, recovery and postpartum period, helping you to overcome the challenges, celebrate the milestones and get the much needed rest you need in between. I am here to help, you don't have to do this alone. Be gentle on yourselves at this incredibly amazing, but also trying time. Remember you and this new little babe have been born and are growing. I hope I can be a part of your journey. I offer birth doula services (in-person and virtual), registered nursing postpartum doula day and night services (in-person and virtual), childbirth education (private, group, and virtual), lactation education (private, group and virtual) and lactation consulting services. I have always enjoyed helping others. I started my training in the medical field at the young age of 17 when I became a Certified Nurse Assistant. I continued my studies and became a Certified Medical Assistant, Although pregnancy was not easy for my body I thoroughly enjoyed being pregnant. With each pregnancy I was taught natural ways to cope and how to give my body what it needed. This gave me the desire to help other women, that desire continued to grow through each of my 5 pregnancies/ births to the point that I delivered my last baby unassisted and was able to catch her myself. I began my formal training with DONA in 2022 and became a certified birth doula in 2023. I have since worked with 4 midwives. in doing so I have gained great hands on experience and knowledge. I have been blessed to help many women through their own birth experiences. I look forward to continuing to serve and empower women for years to come. I want to continue the tradition of empowering and enriching women’s pregnancies and births, like my midwives did for me. Being a doula I get to do just that

I had Stephanie as my doula a couple years ago and right from the start I knew it was the right decision! My pregnancy was not easy, but Stephanie was there with words of encouragement, kindness and no judgment. When it came time to deliver, she was at my bedside with lots of trips and tricks up her sleeve! In times where she needed to help relax me, she was able to relax my husband too! She was never pushy, never made me try something I did not want to do and most importantly, she was kind and respectful not only to our family but to our doctor and the hospital staff as well! If we ever choose to get pregnant again, the moment we find out I am calling 2 people...our daycare to get on the waiting list and Stephanie to make sure she is with us every step of the way!
