What's the Cost of Hiring a Lactation Consultant in Jacksonville, NC?

The cost of a lactation consultant in Jacksonville, NC, can vary depending on the provider and the type of service (in-person, virtual, or hospital-based). If specific data for Jacksonville isn't available, the average cost of a lactation consultant in the United States typically ranges from $100 to $300 per session. Some insurance plans may cover part or all of the cost, so it's a good idea to check with your provider.

The cost of a lactation consultant in Jacksonville, NC can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Certification

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) typically charge more than Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) due to their advanced training and ability to handle complex breastfeeding issues.

  • Visit Type

In-home visits generally cost more than office visits or virtual consultations. Many consultants in Jacksonville offer telehealth options at reduced rates.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance covers the cost of a lactation consultant in Jacksonville, NC, depends on your specific insurance plan. Under the Affordable Care Act, many insurance plans are required to cover breastfeeding support, including consultations with lactation consultants, often at no cost to the patient. However, coverage can vary, so it’s important to check with your insurance provider to confirm details such as in-network providers, the number of covered visits, and any required referrals. Some lactation consultants may also offer assistance with submitting claims for reimbursement if they are not directly covered.

  • Number of Sessions

Some consultants offer package deals for multiple sessions, which can be more cost-effective than paying per visit, especially for ongoing breastfeeding challenges.

  • HSA and FSA Eligibility

Lactation consulting is an IRS-eligible medical expense, meaning you can use HSA or FSA funds to cover the cost without paying taxes on those dollars.

  • Experience and Specialization

Consultants with specialized expertise in areas like tongue ties, premature infant feeding, or relactation may charge higher rates.

When looking for a lactation consultant in Jacksonville, NC, it's a good idea to check with your insurance provider first, as many plans cover lactation services. Interview several consultants to find one who fits your needs and budget, and ask about their specific credentials, experience, and what each session includes.

I am a veteran of the United States Air Force, spouse of a military retiree, International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS), and La Leche League Leader (LLLL). I completed Associate of Arts in General Studies and Bachelor of Arts in Psychology degrees from American Military University. I am certified in BLS for the Provider and trained in AED use. My husband and I have seven children. It is because of them, especially the first three, that I am where I am today. My breastfeeding journey with each of them was different. Every journey was different because every baby was, and each had their own challenges. (The parent may know what they are doing, but the baby needs to learn.) My experiences with each of my children taught me many things about human lactation throughout the years. Helping lactating parents meet their own goals is my goal. As a doula, all of my education and experience will help me to provide families compassionate care in the postpartum period.

Mary came over when my son was first born because he wouldn’t latch. We got him to latch when she came to the visit and he has been doing well ever since. She also has come over to do a weighted feed for my son so we could figure out how much he’s eating, he is exclusively breast fed. Then, she came over to help with bottle refusal. Mary is extremely reliable and makes time out of her schedule to help her clients. I definitely recommend her.
