About me

I'm a career nanny and Newborn Care Specialist with a Master's in Childhood Studies. I'm also currently working towards certification as a post-natal mental health specialist. My approach to working with both parents and children is a calm environment, lots of empathy, and a focus on parental well-being and children's rights. I've primarily worked with children ages newborn to 5 years old, with focused interest in sleep, development, language acquisition, and children's rights- particularly how caregivers can apply the UNCRC to the every day care of children. I've been blessed with some amazing, lovely nanny families throughout my career, and I've had the good fortune to work with both celebrity clients and members of a royal family. I'm very easy-going, I tend to get along with everyone, and I value kindess, tolerance, and communication.

Newborn Tricks and Tips - Beyond the Basics
Online event
You've learned the basics of how to take care of your newborn- bathing, feeding, burping, etc. But what about the things that no one tells you about? The things that take you to Reddit in the middle of the night trying to find answers from other exhausted and anxious parents? This class will cover the tips and tricks learned by Mel over her 20 year career as a Nanny and Newborn Care Specialist. She'll touch on things that have worked for her, and she'll cover some helpful topics picked up from her Master's in Childhood Studies. You'll learn: + Why your baby is pulling off of the nipple for no good reason. + Is "nipple confusion" real, and should you worry about it? + What is that weird sound your baby is making? + How to be assertive with well-meaning yet intrustive people. + Speaking of, why is everyone judging you for everything?! + How to deal with Parent Guilt. + What does it mean for parents who give birth at a "Baby-Friendly" hospital? + How to work effectively with your partner as a supportive team. + How much poo is normal, and why there are so many kinds. + Is your 2 week old about to roll over?! + The fussiness hierarchy. + "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" and other effective ways to soothe your baby + And much more- with LOTS of stuff about sleep (why won't they sleep, what is active sleep, how to get them to sleep, how to transfer them to a crib, why their sleep changes, what to do about it, and when YOU will sleep) After the course, Mel will open it up to a Q&A. Feel free to ask anything, and she'll be happy to answer! If something falls outside of her purview, she'll follow up with you after class to ensure that you feel confident going forward.

Melissa came to work for us as a maternity nurse for the first few weeks after our daughter arrived, and we loved her so much she came back again a few months later! I was initially unsure of whether I wanted to hire a maternity nurse as I worried about it feeling quite intrusive or feeling like the maternity nurse was 'taking over' the baby. My husband and I agreed there was no harm in interviewing applicants and then if we didn't find anyone suitable, we had our answer. After interviewing several applicants, we'd nearly given up on the idea when the agency suggested one more - Mel. Gosh, I'm so glad they did. In our first introduction over facetime I immediately felt a connection with Mel, so she came to work for us for the first few weeks after our daughter was born, to help us settle in to parenthood. She is kind, supportive, knowledgeable, and appears to have endless patience (for both parents and babies!). She taught us the safest ways to get our daughter to sleep, bath her, change her, how to introduce a bottle, helped with breastfeeding, as well as helping me to figure out which breast pump to buy, how to work it, and sat with me for encouragement at all times. She would remind me when I needed to take my next medication and helped with any household tasks that I couldn't do due to recovery. There wasn't a single area of our lives that she didn't help out with in those first few weeks. I highly recommend Mel to anyone who is considering a maternity nurse. The warm, maternal, supportive energy that she brought into our home at such a vulnerable time was invaluable. She will always have a special place in our family - I just wish she could move in here forever!
