Initial Postpartum Consultation
What to Expect During an Initial Lactation Consultation Your first meeting with me is comprehensive and typically lasts between 60-90 minutes. During this time, I will gather detailed information about your personal experience and concerns while observing a complete feeding session. This thorough approach ensures I can provide the most effective support for your specific situation. 1. Initial Interview and History Taking: We will discus your pregnancy, birth experience, and breast feeding journey so far. They’ll also discuss your goals and any specific concerns you want to address. 2. Physical Assessment: I will examine your breasts and nipples, as well as your baby’s mouth, sucking patterns, and overall behavior. This helps identify any physical factors that might affect feeding. 3. Feeding Observation: You will nurse your baby while I observe positioning, latch, and feeding behaviors. 4. Hands-on Guidance: I will demonstrate and help you practice various positions and techniques to improve comfort and feeding efficiency. 5. Customized Care Plan: Based on the assessment, you’ll receive a detailed plan addressing your specific needs, including feeding strategies, pumping schedules if needed, and follow-up care recommendations.

Prenatal Lactation Consultation
Prenatal lactation counseling helps you prepare for breastfeeding before your baby arrives. We will review your health history, discuss anatomy or past surgeries, create a feeding plan, and discus what to expect in the first days after birth. We will also review medications that might impact milk supply. We will also discus situations like multiples, premature birth, or previous issues experienced during prior breastfeeding journies. Planning for pumping, milk storage, or returning to work. Demonstrating early hand expression techniques (if recommended past 37 weeks by your doctor). Setting realistic expectations for newborn latching and stomach sizes. Why schedule a prenatal counseling session? Discover potential challenges before delivery. Build your confidence and reduce anxiety related to breastfeeding. Learn how to choose and use a breast pump through insurance if applicable. I'm happy to meet you at your home and be your local resource and contact before postpartum hormones and sleep deprivation kick in!
