About Christa joy

Hi, I’m Christa Joy Kirtland, a DONA-certified birth doula and certified childbirth educator serving families throughout Central New Jersey. My passion for birth support began with my own pregnancy and the birth of my son. As my husband and I prepared for his arrival, I learned so much about the birth process and the many ways to work with your body during labor. After experiencing a positive, empowering hospital birth myself, I knew I wanted to help other families feel informed, supported, and confident as they welcomed their babies. Before becoming a doula, I earned my master’s degree in counseling and worked with young adults navigating anxiety, depression, grief, and other life transitions. That background continues to shape my approach to birth work today. I believe every family deserves compassionate, individualized support that honors their unique hopes, values, and circumstances. Whether you envision an unmedicated birth or plan to use pain medication, my goal is to help you feel prepared, respected, and empowered to make informed decisions along the way. While birth doesn’t always unfold as we expect, I believe having knowledgeable, steady support can make a meaningful difference in how you experience it. I live in Branchburg, NJ, with my husband, Andrew, our two children, Luke and Hope, and a healthy appreciation for books, puzzles, trying new recipes, and dark chocolate!

We worked with Christa on in-home birth classes and are so thankful that we did! She was warm, informative, and provided us with lots of great knowledge for first time parents (without being too overwhelming). We appreciated her use of visual tools for learning. Would absolutely recommend for birth classes, and I know she would be wonderful birth support as a doula as well. Thank you Christa!

We truly could not have asked for a better doula to support us through pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum. From the beginning, Christa was a calming, reassuring, and supportive presence. Throughout my pregnancy, she consistently checked in, answered questions, and offered thoughtful suggestions, including natural ways to prepare my body and encourage labor. When I ended up being induced at 42 weeks, I was disappointed that I couldn’t deliver at our chosen birth center, but having Christa by my side, along with our midwives, made the experience 100x better. During early labor, she helped me understand the pros and cons of the options being presented without ever making me feel pressured. She made sure I felt informed and confident, and wholeheartedly supported every decision I made. I always felt heard, respected, and empowered. What truly sets Christa apart is that her care didn’t end when our daughter was born. Both my daughter and I experienced complications, and she continued checking in throughout postpartum, offering resources for NICU family support, helpful suggestions, and genuine care for our entire family. Months later, when our daughter needed surgery at 5 months old, Christa went above and beyond again. She checked in on us and even dropped off meals during an incredibly stressful and emotional time. It meant more to us than I can put into words. Christa wasn’t just there for our daughter’s birth—she supported our family through some of our most vulnerable moments. Her compassion, knowledge, kindness, and genuine investment in the families she works with are truly special. I wholeheartedly recommend her and will always be grateful for the care she showed our family.

When we decided to pursue a more natural birth, our midwife recommended that we consider hiring a doula. We found Christa, and hiring her ended up being one of the best decisions we made during our pregnancy. From the very beginning, Christa was incredibly helpful, supportive, and informative. We took her birthing class with my husband and my mom, and it was such a valuable experience. It helped all of us get on the same page and gave us so much information and knowledge that we otherwise wouldn’t have had going into labor. In the weeks leading up to our birth, Christa consistently checked in with us and reached out around our important appointments. When we finally went into labor, there were several unexpected changes to our birth plan, but Christa guided us through every challenge so calmly and beautifully. She never left my side and was constantly encouraging different positions, providing counterpressure during contractions, and helping me feel supported through each stage of labor. Looking back, having a doula there throughout the entire birth was incredibly reassuring. It helped calm my nerves, and my husband felt like we always had a knowledgeable and experienced person on our side who could help guide and support us. Our birth didn’t go exactly as we had planned, but we truly cherished every minute of it, and Christa was a huge part of making that possible. Even after the birth, she came to our home to check in on both the baby and me and brought us such a thoughtful gift. We are so grateful to have had Christa by our side throughout this entire experience and would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a doula!
