Working with newborns has been one of the most meaningful and transformative parts of my life. As a Newborn Care Specialist and doula, I’ve had the privilege of stepping into families’ lives during one of their most tender and vulnerable seasons. My work is a blend of expertise, intuition, and genuine care—supporting parents while nurturing their little ones with patience, gentleness, and respect. Over the years, I’ve supported families through every kind of newborn experience: the sleepy, peaceful stretches; the unpredictable nights; the feeding challenges; the emotional highs and lows; and the beautiful moments of connection that make it all worthwhile. I’ve guided parents through establishing healthy routines, understanding newborn cues, navigating feeding choices, and building confidence in their own instincts. My approach is grounded in evidence-based care, but also in honoring each family’s unique rhythm and values. Whether I’m soothing a fussy baby, helping a parent master a swaddle, or simply offering a calm presence in the middle of the night, my goal is always the same—to create a sense of safety, support, and empowerment. Being invited into a family’s home during such an intimate time is something I never take lightly. Every newborn I’ve cared for has taught me something new, and every parent I’ve supported has reminded me of the strength and tenderness that define early parenthood. It’s a privilege to walk alongside families as they welcome new life, and it’s work I carry with deep gratitude.

Shannon Sappington

Packages from $850

Hi! My name is Shannon Sappington and I am the owner of Serving Hands Doula! I have been a doula since 2016, providing personalized support and care to my clients during their pregnancy, labor and birth! Before becoming a certified Labor Doula, I achieved a Masters degree in Counseling as well as a teaching certificate in elementary education. My educational background and experiences enhance my abilities as a labor doula. I have a nurturing and compassionate spirt and I believe that the best tools I bring into every birth are my heart, my hands and my voice. My goals are to equip you to be ready mentally, physically and emotionally, and to serve you during the journey of your pregnancy, labor and the birth of your baby. Besides being a doula, I love doing life with my husband, our four kids and three dogs! We are an adoptive family - so my husband and I have 3 biological children and 1 through adoption. We love Jesus, laughing, cracking jokes, eating Chinese food, going on trips and also relaxing at home watching a movie. I try to not take life for granted and enjoy the big and the small moments of everyday life. God is my life breath and He is woven all throughout my story.

Shannon is amazing!!!! We loved having her as our doula. She helped both my husband and I through my pregnancy and my very long and hard labor. I set out to have a home birth, but ended up transferring to the hospital and she was there every step of the way. She helped me with my very hard back labor and was just the support my husband and I needed. We will definitely be hiring her again with our next baby!!

It is truly an honor to walk alongside families during such a tender and transformative season. My practice is rooted in respectful care, attachment theory, and evidence-based newborn and postpartum support, with a strong emphasis on infant development and parental mental health. LaDereka was and has continued to be our emotional and healthcare question support through pregnancy as a teacher (daddy boot camp), doula and newborn care specialist. She was key to helping us understand our options and what to expect when my pregnancy went from normal and healthy to a diagnosis of gestational hypertension with bed rest at 34 weeks. LaDereka helped us rewrite our birth preferences to accommodate an induction at 37 weeks and led us through the different interventions and natural options we could try before agreeing to an intervention. LaDereka remained by our side through out the labor process as a trusted guide and second opinion with which to weigh the nurse and doctor’s suggestions and feedback. It was great to be able to ask questions and understand the process even when our nurse was attending to other patients. Although we ended up delivering our happy and healthy baby girl via caesarean, I know we tried everything we could have for a natural birth. As our newborn care specialist LaDereka was there on night 1 to ease our transition from hospital to home. Dad is getting to sleep through the night and takes over when her shift ends in the morning and mom is enjoying 8+ hours of sleep each night (with pumping mixed in!). Not only has LaDereka’s care of our newborn allowed us to prioritize sleep and my recovery, she’s a wonderful resource for lactation and all things baby care.

Vanessa was our doula for all 5 of our children. My husband wasn’t convinced we needed a doula, but after our first was born, he said, “We could not have done that without her!” So she was considered a necessity for the subsequent births. Before birth day, she met with us to discuss our birth plan and goals and how she could help us with that. She taught us what to do for pain management. She involved my husband as much as he wanted/could handle, but she did a significant amount of the pain relief techniques for me. She made sure I was drinking water and always had my cup filled up. She fed me. She reminded me to breathe correctly. She reminded me to “push from your bottom”. She held my hand. She put a cold cloth on my forehead. She knew what I needed when I didn’t. Her presence is calm and kind. For my last birth, my only home birth, she asked in our initial meeting if I had considered catching the baby myself. I told her no, but we decided to discuss what that would look like anyway. The midwife missed that birth. Vanessa made it just in time. I didn’t even know I was pushing, but she knew! She said to my husband,“She’s pushing - we need to get her undressed and in the tub.” She helped me undress and get in the birthing tub and - who knew - I caught my own baby and she was right there with me guiding the process by telling me exactly what to do like we had practiced weeks before. She helped to handle discussing the birth and updates to my midwife on the phone, communicating to us what the midwife needed us to know. She was definitely a source of comfort for all my births, but especially that one! She also does a postpartum visit to check on us and comes full of ideas, contacts, and resources for any postpartum help we need. I cannot recommend her enough. She is such a blessing to our family.
