What's the Cost of Hiring a Midwife in Roanoke, VA?

The cost of a midwife in Roanoke, VA, can vary depending on the services provided, the midwife's experience, and whether it is for a home birth, birth center delivery, or other care. Typically, midwife services in the U.S. range from $3,000 to $6,000 for prenatal care, delivery, and postpartum care. Some midwives may offer payment plans, and costs may also differ based on insurance coverage. It is best to contact local midwives or birth centers in Roanoke for specific pricing.

The cost of a midwife in Roanoke, VA can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Midwife

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who work in hospital settings may have different pricing than Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) who attend home births or birth center deliveries.

  • Birth Setting

Hospital births with a midwife typically cost less out-of-pocket when covered by insurance, while home births and birth center deliveries may have different fee structures.

  • Scope of Services

Many midwives offer comprehensive packages that include prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, and postpartum care, which can affect the overall cost.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance covers the cost of a midwife in Roanoke, VA, depends on your specific insurance plan and the type of care provided. Many insurance plans, including Medicaid, cover midwifery services if the midwife is licensed and in-network. Coverage may also depend on whether the care is provided in a hospital, birthing center, or at home. It's important to contact your insurance provider to confirm details about your plan, including approved midwives and settings, as well as any out-of-pocket costs you may be responsible for.

  • Experience and Specialization

Midwives with extensive experience, additional certifications, or specializations such as VBAC support or water birth may charge higher rates.

  • Geographic Location

Midwifery costs can vary based on the cost of living and demand for midwifery services in your specific area.

When considering hiring a midwife in Roanoke, VA, it's advisable to research and interview several midwives to find one who aligns with your birth plan, preferences, and budget. During consultations, you can discuss their specific services, insurance acceptance, and pricing structure to ensure you have a clear understanding of what is included and the associated costs.

My experience with Alora was wonderful. If I could give more stars, I would. From the very beginning, Alora guided my husband and me, as first-time parents, through finding doctors, learning about the stages of fetal development, and even showing us how to use a tennis ball and a rebozo to relieve stress on a pregnant body. At the same time, I was pregnant, I was able to create a birth plan with her, and for an additional fee, she offered her cleaning services since I was overwhelmed, and she had my home ready to receive a baby. Alora also provided us with many local resources and events. Even after my child was born, she still came by and still checks in on us. We really love Alora; she is a stellar doula.

Chantel Spinner

Lynchburg, Virginia

Chantel Spinner

6 years of experience

I’m Chantel Spinner, a certified birth and postpartum doula, lactation support counselor, Pregnancy and Infant Loss (PAIL) advocate, and support group facilitator proudly serving Lynchburg, Virginia, and surrounding areas. A Lynchburg native, wife, and mother of two incredible daughters, I bring not only professional training but lived experience and deep roots in this community. I hold a degree in Sociology with minors in Human Services and Gender Studies from Randolph College, and I am also a Notary Public for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Supporting pregnant individuals is more than my profession. It is my calling. As a strong advocate for reproductive justice, I am committed to creating safe, empowering spaces where bodily autonomy is respected, voices are amplified, and compassionate care is the standard. Witnessing the stark disparities in maternal health, particularly the alarming maternal mortality rates among Black women, fueled my decision to become a doula and deepen my advocacy. Through The Melanin Fluent Doula agency, I offer culturally fluent, holistic support throughout pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum journey. My services are designed to nurture, empower, and educate families as they navigate one of the most profound transitions of their lives. Beyond birthwork, I am a certified peristeam facilitator trained through Steamy Chick, following my own positive experiences with vaginal steaming for menstrual wellness. In 2021, I earned certification as a lactation support counselor, with a focus on bridging gaps in breastfeeding support for Black families and fostering a more inclusive, informed community. I am also a Pregnancy and Infant Loss Advocate, dedicated to providing compassionate, affirming support for individuals and families navigating grief and loss, an area of care that is deeply needed and too often overlooked. As a support group facilitator, I create intentional, trauma-informed spaces where participants are encouraged to share openly, build community, and move from isolation toward connection and strength. Currently, I am expanding my knowledge as an amateur herbalist, reconnecting with the healing traditions of my Black Southern heritage and grounding my practice in holistic wellness. I may not be able to change every outcome, but I believe deeply in my ability to make a meaningful impact in my community, one birth, one family, and one moment at a time.

Sarah Stanley

4 years of experience

Sarah is a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) and Licensed midwife (LM) Virginia. She brings deep passion and dedication to the birth world, with a mission to create positive change, one birth at a time. From a young age, Sarah felt called to support families, though it took time to find the path that aligned with her heart. It wasn’t until she joined the ARMY and had her first child that she realized birth didn’t have to look like what society or Hollywood often portrays. That experience sparked a fire in her to help women understand that God designed their bodies with strength and purpose! While still serving in the military, Sarah supported three fellow soldiers through their birthing journeys. After completing her service in 2012, she became a doula and birth photographer, then soon after, a Certified StillBirthday Doula, walking alongside families through both joyful and heartbreaking births. Her commitment deepened with time, and after much prayer and reflection, she felt a strong calling to pursue midwifery and became a CPM. Sarah is passionate about empowering mothers to trust their bodies, their instincts, and their faith. Her guiding belief: “Peace on Earth begins with birth.” She is blessed with a loving husband, four beautiful children, and two angel babies. A devoted follower of Christ, Sarah finds joy in the simple things like family time, homeschooling, and serving at her church. Raising Godly children has always been one of her highest callings. In every aspect of her work, Sarah’s love, faith, and joy shine through. She believes that birth is not only the arrival of a baby but the birth of a mother and a family. Her mission is to walk with women through that sacred transformation, providing unwavering support and prayer from pregnancy through parenthood.

I have attempted to write this testimonial time and time again, yet I keep falling short — because words alone cannot truly encompass my experience with Sarah and Kelly. To fully understand what they offer, you must experience it. I was diligent in my search. I interviewed midwives with care and intention. All were qualified, but none spoke to my soul… until I heard Sarah’s voice. That same voice became my anchor — the calm in the storm when I didn’t realize I was deep in transition and drowning in self-doubt. It was the voice that prayed over me. The voice that held space for me when I questioned my own strength. The voice that gently guided my baby into the world — the first hands my child ever knew. How lucky my child is to have been welcomed to Earth by Sarah’s hands. But the story doesn’t end with birth. Kelly, became a lifeline in my postpartum journey. She held space for my tears when the weight of new motherhood felt heavy. She didn’t rush me back to “okay” — she sat with me in the not-okay and prayed with me through it. In those moments, with both Sarah and Kelly, I felt God in the room. Not as a distant idea, but as a presence moving through their words, their touch, their care. Throughout my pregnancy and birth, I was never managed — I was supported. My choices were honored. My autonomy was protected. Every decision was made with informed consent, never coercion
