What's the Cost of Hiring a Midwife in St. Louis, MO?

The cost of a midwife in St. Louis, MO, can vary depending on the services provided, the midwife's experience, and whether the birth takes place at home, a birth center, or in a hospital. On average, midwife services for prenatal care and a home or birth center delivery can range from $3,000 to $6,000. Some midwives may offer payment plans, and certain insurance plans may cover part of the cost. It is best to contact local midwives or birth centers directly for specific pricing and details.

The cost of a midwife in St. Louis, MO can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Midwife

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who work in hospital settings may have different pricing than Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) who attend home births or birth center deliveries.

  • Birth Setting

Hospital births with a midwife typically cost less out-of-pocket when covered by insurance, while home births and birth center deliveries may have different fee structures.

  • Scope of Services

Many midwives offer comprehensive packages that include prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, and postpartum care, which can affect the overall cost.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance covers the cost of a midwife in St. Louis, MO, depends on your specific insurance plan and the type of services provided. Many insurance plans do cover midwifery care, especially if the midwife is a certified nurse-midwife (CNM) and part of an in-network provider. Coverage may also vary based on whether the birth occurs at a hospital, birthing center, or home. It's important to review your insurance policy and contact your provider to confirm coverage details, including co-pays, deductibles, and any restrictions. Additionally, Missouri Medicaid may cover midwifery services in certain cases.

  • Experience and Specialization

Midwives with extensive experience, additional certifications, or specializations such as VBAC support or water birth may charge higher rates.

  • Geographic Location

Midwifery costs can vary based on the cost of living and demand for midwifery services in your specific area.

When considering hiring a midwife in St. Louis, MO, it's advisable to research and interview several midwives to find one who aligns with your birth plan, preferences, and budget. During consultations, you can discuss their specific services, insurance acceptance, and pricing structure to ensure you have a clear understanding of what is included and the associated costs.

Kelley Ellis

I’m Kelley, St. Louis birth doula, mom to 3 boys, married to the guy I fell in love with in high school. I became obsessed with birth after our first was born via cesarean after an induction for “dates” for “failure to progress.” Air quotes intended. The disappointment I felt surprised me; I dove into research about birth in America. I learned all about my fertility, chose a provider who would be supportive of a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), and hired a doula. Best laid plans and all that… I had a cesarean for high blood pressure at 42 weeks. I definitely still felt disappointed over his birth, but because I was educated and well supported, I knew we had made the best decisions with the options we had. I still planned for VBA2C for baby #3, and was able to push him out of my body right into his daddy’s hands – with a lot of help from my medical team for high blood pressure again, and so much support from my doula. When my former industry got flip-turned upside down and my structural engineering days were forced to end, I decided to follow my passion and dreams and become a birth doula, and now life has moved us from our native Houston to St. Louis. I see my role as a birth doula like being a good coach. I’m on the sidelines with all the information for you, but you’re the one who has to execute the plays. I’m here to educate you and support you whether you’re having a baby at home in the water with twinkle lights, epidural or not at the hospital, or a planned cesarean. I’m going to meet you where you are and dig down into that hole with you. And after the baby is here and you’re overwhelmed, I’m available to help you out, listen to you, and get you through those first few weeks. When I’m not doula-ing, I’m training Jiu Jitsu, at the baseball fields, a wrestling meet, a choir or band event, playing banjo, or I’ve got my nose stuck in a book. And I’m always down for some Tex-Mex.

Kelley is the absolute best! From the moment we started working with Kelley during my first pregnancy, I knew she was the perfect fit for our birth team. I wanted to approach birth like an athlete—mentally and physically prepared, with a strong advocate by my side—and Kelley was exactly that. She was both coach and champion for me and my husband, ensuring we felt confident, informed, and supported every step of the way. When labor came, she was instrumental in helping me stay focused and in control. The movements she guided me through were game-changers, especially when my baby’s heart rate fluctuated during contractions. Thanks to her expertise, we were able to avoid additional interventions and stay on track for the vaginal birth I had planned. The nurses were raving about Kelley, praising how seamlessly she worked with them, understanding the plan of care and adjusting strategies in real time. Her presence brought a sense of calm, strength, and reassurance that I truly believe made all the difference in my experience. Without a doubt, Kelley will be a part of our birth team again when we welcome our next child. If you’re looking for a doula who will advocate fiercely, support you completely, and help you approach birth with confidence, Kelley is the one you want by your side. Thank you, Kelley, for being such an incredible part of our journey!

Hello there and congratulations! I am a homeschooling mama to four girls and a lover of all things birth. I believe that birth is a natural process and I love helping empower couples as they welcome their babies into the world. I’ve been teaching natural childbirth classes for 12 years, attending births as a doula for 7 years, and am now studying to become a homebirth midwife. If you want someone who is going to be a positive, uplifting voice throughout your pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, I’d love to be that for you.

Jackie has been such an answered prayer for me and my family. I heard about her through mutual friends, reached out, and quickly met with her to go over my birth history, trauma, and hopes for my VBAC. I wanted an unmedicated VBAC, and with her support, I got that experience in the end. She listened deeply, cared sincerely, and that was evident throughout my pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. She is steady and helped me stay grounded. She never made anything feel like an emergency unless it truly was. Anytime I needed support, information, encouragement, or help making decisions, she was there immediately with wisdom, resources, and alternatives. I also took her birth classes and learned so much that helped me stay confident and informed throughout my pregnancy. I especially loved how she shared her own birth experiences in such an authentic and encouraging way. During the final weeks before labor, I leaned on her DAILY for encouragement and support. She reminded me that my body wasn’t broken after my first birth and helped me learn to trust it again. During labor, she held my hand through contractions, encouraged me constantly, and helped me stay calm and focused. Postpartum, she continued showing up by bringing food, holding my baby, and answering questions during those early weeks. One of the things I appreciated most was sharing faith in Christ throughout the experience. Having a doula who carried herself with such peace, encouragement, and genuine faith was incredibly comforting and meaningful to me. She is authentic, compassionate, and truly loves what she does. I’m forever grateful for her support and will absolutely continue recommending her to everyone I know. I hope she helps me birth all the rest of my babies too!

Hello my name is Doula Asia . I like to consider myself as a DOULAPRENEUR I am the owner of Doula Love, Light, & Life LLC. I am a Mom, Community Health Worker and Maternal Health Advocate. I became a full spectrum doula in 2020 because I want all birthing people to know they have options and a voice that can and will be heard when it comes to their body and baby. I want to help you know what questions to ask your provider, to know how to advocate for yourself, and to know there is someone in your corner to support you through pregnancy/birth/and postpartum journey. Motherhood is a beautiful thing but there is no manual on how we should be a mother but if you have the right support team it will be one of our greatest moments.

Asia was incredibly supportive and knowledgeable throughout my entire birthing and postpartum experience so far. She made sure that she knew all of my preferences for my birth plan far ahead of time and prepped me for as many natural pain remedies possible. I love how she included my mother and my partner, providing knowledge necessary to all of us during our meetings. Asia continuously checks in with me to ensure mine and the baby's health on a regular basis. She truly made my birth a comfortable and non-judgmental space for creating life. I would not have wanted to bring my baby into the world any other way. As a first time mom, I can definitely say that Asia made me feel prepared and supported the entire time. She is amazing!

Hi! I'm Natasha, a mother of 2 daughters and a birth doula serving the St. Louis, Missouri area and the Metro East area in Southern Illinois since 2021. I like to have a holistic approach to the pregnancy and birth experience. I like to focus on nutrition and positioning techniques during pregnancy to help minimize end-of-pregnancy concerns and labor challenges. I started my doula journey shortly after my first born because I wanted to help other families to know that they do have a voice that matters. Having a cesarean myself, then a HBAC, I have a unique perspective on the difference of each of those experiences. I learned the importance of having the proper support, the right to informed choice and the resources to have a positive pregnancy, birth and postpartum experience. That is what I hope I can provide to my community.

Natasha rocks! What a Godsend!! She was so incredible to work with, and I really can't recommend her enough. From the beginning, she was super respectful about our desires for birth. And she was always easy to get a hold of with any questions I had. Her prenatal visits really helped us prepare for the mental and physical aspects of birth. She gave us so much good information, even for postpartum. Natasha was great tor showing my husband how to support me too! When labor started, Natasha was so loving and helpful with all my first-time momma nerves. She met me at my house during early labor and followed us to the hospital when I was ready. Before I could be admitted, the hospital required me to consent to a cervical check. I did, but the check was not done well and I refused getting another. The doctor kept pressing me to do another while I was bawling in pain, working through hard contractions every minute by that time. Natasha very respectfully and tactfully stood up for me, and I'll never forget that. As I was admitted and continued to labor, Natasha supported me so well. I seriously couldn't have asked for a more amazing doula. The whole time, I felt as though she genuinely cared for us and supported our goals for birth. I'm so glad she was by my side!
