What's the Cost of Hiring a Midwife in Fargo, ND?

The cost of a midwife in Fargo, ND, can vary depending on the services provided, the midwife's experience, and whether the care is offered in a hospital, birthing center, or at home. On average, midwifery services for prenatal care, labor, delivery, and postpartum care may range from $3,000 to $6,000 for home births or birth center deliveries. However, costs can be higher in hospital settings if additional medical interventions are required. Insurance coverage may reduce the out-of-pocket cost, so it’s important to check with your provider. Prices can also vary based on specific midwives or practices in the Fargo area, so contacting local midwives for detailed pricing is recommended.

The cost of a midwife in Fargo, ND can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Midwife

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who work in hospital settings may have different pricing than Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) who attend home births or birth center deliveries.

  • Birth Setting

Hospital births with a midwife typically cost less out-of-pocket when covered by insurance, while home births and birth center deliveries may have different fee structures.

  • Scope of Services

Many midwives offer comprehensive packages that include prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, and postpartum care, which can affect the overall cost.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance covers the cost of a midwife in Fargo, ND, depends on your specific insurance plan and provider. Many insurance plans, including Medicaid, may cover midwifery services if the midwife is licensed and delivering care in an approved setting, such as a hospital, birthing center, or sometimes even at home. It's important to check directly with your insurance provider to confirm coverage, including any in-network requirements, co-pays, or limitations. Additionally, you should verify that the midwife you choose is covered under your plan to avoid unexpected costs.

  • Experience and Specialization

Midwives with extensive experience, additional certifications, or specializations such as VBAC support or water birth may charge higher rates.

  • Geographic Location

Midwifery costs can vary based on the cost of living and demand for midwifery services in your specific area.

When considering hiring a midwife in Fargo, ND, it's advisable to research and interview several midwives to find one who aligns with your birth plan, preferences, and budget. During consultations, you can discuss their specific services, insurance acceptance, and pricing structure to ensure you have a clear understanding of what is included and the associated costs.

I have always enjoyed helping others. I started my training in the medical field at the young age of 17 when I became a Certified Nurse Assistant. I continued my studies and became a Certified Medical Assistant, Although pregnancy was not easy for my body I thoroughly enjoyed being pregnant. With each pregnancy I was taught natural ways to cope and how to give my body what it needed. This gave me the desire to help other women, that desire continued to grow through each of my 5 pregnancies/ births to the point that I delivered my last baby unassisted and was able to catch her myself. I began my formal training with DONA in 2022 and became a certified birth doula in 2023. I have since worked with 4 midwives. in doing so I have gained great hands on experience and knowledge. I have been blessed to help many women through their own birth experiences. I look forward to continuing to serve and empower women for years to come. I want to continue the tradition of empowering and enriching women’s pregnancies and births, like my midwives did for me. Being a doula I get to do just that

I had Stephanie as my doula a couple years ago and right from the start I knew it was the right decision! My pregnancy was not easy, but Stephanie was there with words of encouragement, kindness and no judgment. When it came time to deliver, she was at my bedside with lots of trips and tricks up her sleeve! In times where she needed to help relax me, she was able to relax my husband too! She was never pushy, never made me try something I did not want to do and most importantly, she was kind and respectful not only to our family but to our doctor and the hospital staff as well! If we ever choose to get pregnant again, the moment we find out I am calling 2 people...our daycare to get on the waiting list and Stephanie to make sure she is with us every step of the way!

I'm Jamie Shelley, a Certified Nurse-Midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant serving families in Alexandria, Minnesota and the surrounding central Minnesota region through Empowered Midwifery and Wellness, LLC. I grew up on a rural Minnesota farm and have been working in maternal-child health since 2006, with experience spanning labor and delivery, community birth, lactation consulting, postpartum care, nursing education, pregnancy resource center work, and breastfeeding support group leadership. I earned my Master's of Science in Nurse-Midwifery from Bethel University in 2024. I offer homebirth packages that include full prenatal and postpartum care, waterbirth, VBAC support, and breastfeeding support — whether you birthed with me or elsewhere and simply need additional lactation guidance along the way. I approach every client's care through a whole-person lens, believing that physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health are all deeply connected. I'm a committed listener, and I look forward to partnering with you on your health journey. Beyond my clinical work, I co-founded The Birth Collective — a community organization dedicated to building connection around pregnancy, birth, and postpartum in central Minnesota. We host quarterly in-person gatherings in Alexandria, maintain an online community where families can ask questions and find support, and work to connect parents with trusted local birth workers, educators, and resources. I believe life is better lived in community, and The Birth Collective was born out of that conviction — because every family deserves a village. I live in Alexandria with my daughter and am honored to serve the community I call home.

My husband and I feel so incredibly grateful to have Theresa as our doula. It felt like perfect timing when we found her. We were also able to take her birth course, which we looked forward to every week. Not only did we gain so much information, but it brought us closer together and gave us a level of confidence we didn’t have before. And being around other couples going through the same thing made the experience even more special. Theresa was such a calm presence throughout it all. She helped us feel prepared every step of the way. My labor was long and there were times that I wasn’t sure if I could do it, but Theresa helped ground me and reminded me to trust my body, my baby and myself. The breathing guidance and encouragement through every contraction made such a difference. She also supported my husband in such a meaningful way and helped him feel so confident in supporting me, which meant so much to both of us. When our son was born she captured the beautiful moments that we will cherish. Theresa was such a blessing to our birth story, I look back feeling strong, supported and proud. We will always be thankful of the care poured into us. ❤️

Hey! I’m Saralicia Waugh, a certified birth & postpartum doula practicing in Central MN. I started out as a birth photographer in 2017 and my passion for helping families discover what birthing options are available to them so that they can make informed decisions and have an empowering birth experience led to me diving into doula support in early 2024. I then got certified as a birth and postpartum doula in March of 2025. Although I am focusing on doula support at the moment and not currently offering birth photography sessions, I am happy to use your phone to take pictures and videos of you during labor/birth so you can preserve these precious memories. I believe families should have the power to take back control over their birth experience and tune into their innate instincts so they can play an active role in their care for a family-centered, positive outcome. When I'm not at a birth, you can find me making art/designing, spending time in nature with my 3 homeschooling kids, or learning how to make new foods from scratch in my kitchen.

I had a very difficult pregnancy and most decisions were out of my control. Saralicia helped myself and my husband prepare, make informed choices, and create an 3 different plans to advocate for myself depending on how delivery went. With her support, I had a birth experience that was even better than I imagined—empowering, positive, and without pain meds which was important to me. I seriously couldn’t recommend her more highly!

Hello! I'm Candi and I'm a birth & postpartum doula, pre & perinatal massage therapist and bodyworker, childbirth educator, and movement specialist. I originally became a birth doula because my 3 births were incredibly traumatic and I never wanted another mom to feel alone and scared like I felt during those experiences. But having attended births since 2004, I have come to realize that birth is very different than what I originally thought. I've witnessed some of the most amazing births with the most empowered and inspiring moms. I've come to learn that birth happens best when a mom feels supported and seen, when she trusts her body and the process of birth. And I've seen how a birth affects families going into parenting - traumatized moms don't trust their instincts and look for parenting answers outside of themselves. Whereas moms who felt empowered throughout her birthing goes into parenting as a mamma bear - trusting in her instincts and protecting her littles ferociously. It is my heart's work to help mammas, and families, find their strength and empowerment, believe in themselves and their bodies capability to bring baby into the world, and to walk the journey with them, every step of the way.

Highly recommend Candi!! She was one of the best people to have on my support team with both my births. Candi is so kind, down to earth, and personable. I started going to her for prenatal massages and had her as my doula for my first birth. The incredible work she put in to assist me and my husband was the best blessing. For my second birth we did a little hypnobirthing refresher and prenatal massages with her. Candi is such a supportive positive person to surround yourself with. When you're pregnant you don't want to hear all the negative birth stories and traumatic experiences or they might get in your head and impact your own birth story. (Not to shame anyone's experience!) She helps bring all the positive birth stories your way. I truly believe that mind over matter can do incredible things! Even though my first birth didn't go how I would've liked it to, it still was a beautiful experience and helped prepare me for my second birth with a successful unmedicated VBAC. Highly recommend going to Candi for any service she offers!
