Hi, I’m Andrea Carter—founder of It Takes a Village, midwife, mother, and passionate birth advocate. Originally from Gary, Indiana, I made Dallas my home in 2015. Though I dreamed of becoming an OB/GYN as a child, it was my own powerful birth experiences that led me to step into the world of natural birth and begin my journey as a doula in 2016. ​Since then, I’ve had the honor of walking alongside over 160 families as a doula and supporting more than 300 families as a student midwife. I am a proud 2023 graduate of Southwest Technical College, and today I serve families as a staff midwife at Swiss Avenue Birth and Wellness Center, in addition to offering homebirth services throughout the DFW metroplex.​ ​ ​​ As a mother of four—each born naturally—I understand the beauty, strength, and vulnerability of birth firsthand. ​Nusrat Jahan Moon prefers to introduce herself as Amatullah. ​Amatullah is a mother of two beautiful children. After a traumatic birth experience with her first child, she felt an overwhelming desire to become a doula. Then, by Allah's infinite mercy, she used the knowledge gained from her AMANI Birth training during the birth of her second child to experience a natural delivery. She has expressed her desire to gain more knowledge about natural childbirth in the future. ​She is also a writer and is the author of Brishtyveja Bikel. ​She worked with Sorobor as a writer for about two years. Her writings have been published in all of Roudromoyee's books. Moreover, her work has been published by Somokalin Prokason, Muhammad Publication, and several other publishing houses. She has also edited a book called Sukher Natai. ​According to her, motherhood is a difficult path, and she wants to be a companion of mothers on this journey. Working with expectant mothers is an area of her passion. ​"[He] who created death and life to test you [as to] which of you is best in deed – and He is the Exalted in Might, the Forgiving." (Al-Quran, Surah Al-Mulk 67:2) ​Birth is a miracle, as Allah (SWT) creates a human being in the womb and gives it life. Every human is different in color, height, personality, and spirituality. ​The more she thinks about this miracle, the more she feels an urge to be a part of it. Becoming a Birth Doula has become her passion day by day. Working with the mothers who are carrying a living example of Allah's existence is a huge blessing for her. She hopes it will keep reminding her of her true goal in this life: that we all have to return to Him, the one who created all of us.

I have a strong passion for helping families achieve the birth they desire to have and I believe that education is pivotal. My ultimate goal is to help you feel empowered, to help you have a voice in the decision making process, and for you to feel peace with your birthing experience. I provide unbiased, non-judgemental support during pregnancy, birth, and the immediate post-partum period to families from all walks of life for this reason. I am an English teacher of seven years and my husband and I have one son. My path to birth doula work began with my own birth experience; having a doula during my pregnancy was so helpful to me and made me feel much more knowledgeable and in control of my birth. Unfortunately, the birth of my son did not go as planned for many reasons: my doula could not attend my birth, I preeclampsia complications, and my son was in a breech position. Birth is a transformation, but it can also come with trauma. My experience compelled me to become a doula to hopefully help other women have better birth experiences than I did. I’m also passionate about postpartum care; in the time after giving birth, I felt vulnerable and, although I had endured a major physical and emotional event, I was not often the focus or concern. Even amidst so much joy and love for my son, people quickly begin asking about the baby and forget to ask about the new parent. I want to be the doula that I wish I could have had! The role of postpartum doula is to mother the mother, to educate and encourage new parents, and ensure the new family is thriving together. I have received education for the doula role from Paradigm Doula Institute and ongoing continuing education. I am a new Doula and have completed a Dona approved Doula training. My work background is mostly rooted in hospitality, customer service and yoga. I have always had a passion for caring for others and creating a fulfilling experience. When I'm not at work, I can be found cooking a wholesome meal, reading a novel with a strong female lead or doing yoga.
