Hi, I’m Andrea Carter—founder of It Takes a Village, midwife, mother, and passionate birth advocate. Originally from Gary, Indiana, I made Dallas my home in 2015. Though I dreamed of becoming an OB/GYN as a child, it was my own powerful birth experiences that led me to step into the world of natural birth and begin my journey as a doula in 2016. Since then, I’ve had the honor of walking alongside over 160 families as a doula and supporting more than 300 families as a student midwife. I am a proud 2023 graduate of Southwest Technical College, and today I serve families as a staff midwife at Swiss Avenue Birth and Wellness Center, in addition to offering homebirth services throughout the DFW metroplex. As a mother of four—each born naturally—I understand the beauty, strength, and vulnerability of birth firsthand. My mission is to educate and support families so they feel confident, heard, and empowered to make the choices that are right for them. I’ve attended a wide range of births, including VBACs, breech births, and twins, and I bring a calm, grounded presence to every birth space. My Philosophy of Birth I believe that birth is a sacred, physiological process—not something to be managed, but to be supported. Every birthing person deserves compassionate, respectful, and individualized care that centers their voice, values, and vision. I trust the innate wisdom of the body and believe that, with the right support and information, families can birth in power and peace—however that looks for them. Whether in a birth center or at home, I honor each family’s unique journey and hold space for their strength to unfold. At It Takes a Village, you’re not just receiving care—you’re gaining a trusted partner who honors your vision for birth and walks beside you every step of the way.

Midwifery Care Rooted in Trust, Tradition, and Respect At It Takes a Village, our philosophy of midwifery care is grounded in the belief that pregnancy, birth, and postpartum are normal, powerful life events. I work to build a trusting relationship with each client, ensuring that you are an active participant in your care and feel empowered through every step of your experience. Each birth journey is unique, and I tailor my care to support the natural physiological process of childbirth, guided by both your and your baby’s innate human capacity—while always prioritizing your safety. I believe in creating a safe, affirming space where you and your family can grow, learn, and feel seen. Through individualized care and an authentic relationship, I support you in making the best decisions for yourself, your baby, and your family. I provide complete prenatal, birth, and postpartum care, including standard lab work and frequent postpartum visits—because I know that the "fourth trimester" is one of the most overlooked yet deeply important times in a family's journey.
