We had the pleasure of working with Karla for nighttime support over the past eight weeks, and we couldn't be more grateful. She brought a calming presence, and helping us get much-needed rest. Karla was reliable, nurturing, and truly made a difference in our early parenting journey. Highly recommend her to any new family!

Karla helped with my second baby, this was the first time. I was looking for a doula but it was too expensive, then I got a recommendation in Facebook to connect with Karla. She offered me a flexible plan and also she is from my home country. She is a mom of 3, so I knew she was the right person, with knowledge and experience as well. It was the best decision ever, having a doula during labor can make a difference in the experience. She was always available for my questions, even related to other aspects of motherhood. During labor she came on time, she was very warm and friendly, she gave me emotional support and also she guided me how to engage with contractions and the pain, she shared with me useful tips even after birth, she suggested positions and exercises that helped me during labor! It was an amazing experience! I strongly recommend Karla as Doula! Thank you Karla!

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to hire a birth doula in Toronto?

Most Toronto families begin their search for a birth doula between 12 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. Hiring early ensures your doula is available for your due date and have enough time for scheduling your prenatal sessions to help you prepare for labour and postpartum or to help you navigate your options. For example, choosing a hospital, birth centre, a obstetrician or midwife, etc.

Are doula services covered by health insurance in Ontario

While doula care is not currently covered by OHIP (the Ontario Health Insurance Plan), many private insurance providers do offer coverage. Our services are recognized and covered by Sun Life and Carrot Fertility. Furthermore, an increasing number of companies are adding doula support and lactation consulting to their wellness benefits or Healthcare Spending Accounts (HSA). We strongly encourage you to contact your insurance provider directly to ask if "Doula Services" or "Patient Advocacy" is an eligible expense under your specific plan. At The Doula That Could, we provide official itemized receipts for all consultations, birth, and postpartum packages. Our clients have a high success rate in claiming their benefits and receiving reimbursement for their care.

Can a doula help with an induction or an epidural?

Absolutely. Doulas are highly effective for medicated births. We use specific techniques and labour positions that work with your epidural to encourage baby rotation and descent. Our goal is to reduce the risk of further interventions and help you feel empowered during your hospital stay.

Can a doula help me with my planned C-section?

Yes. A doula is an invaluable asset for a planned C-section, providing support that transforms a surgical procedure into a sacred family event. We help you prepare emotionally for the operating room and advocate for "Gentle C-section" practices—such as immediate skin-to-skin contact—which are often overlooked in clinical settings. One of our primary goals during a cesarean birth is protecting the "Golden Hour." While this first hour after birth is crucial for bonding and long-term breastfeeding success, it is frequently delayed during surgical births due to hospital protocols. When this window is missed, it can lead to challenges with milk supply, increased parental stress, and a higher likelihood of needing formula supplementation. To ensure you feel prepared and empowered, all of our birth doula packages include prenatal breastfeeding education and colostrum harvesting kits. We specifically provide our C-section clients with dedicated at-home lactation guidance to navigate the early days of recovery. We are here to ensure that despite the surgery, your transition to parenthood is calm, supported, and focused on your family's unique needs.

What a postpartum doula do during a night shift?

Our overnight postpartum doulas prioritize your rest. We handle newborn soothing, diaper changes, and feeding support (breastfeeding or bottle) while you sleep. Because we are trained in Sleep Science, we help establish healthy sleep foundations from night one so your family can thrive during the fourth trimester. While you sleep, we keep a detail log of baby's activity ( diaper changes, feedings, behaviour) and if needed we also take care bottle/pump parts sanitations, small household chores and breakfast prep for the next day. We also build a sustainable postpartum plan tailored to your needs so when your time with your doula comes to an end, you feel confident and calm.

Can you help families with a baby in NICU?

Transitioning home from the NICU requires specialized care. We offer gentle, expert support for NICU babies and NICU graduated babies, helping parents manage feeding schedules, monitor growth, and build confidence after a complex hospital stay. Our doulas provide the "bridge" between medical care and home life.
