Hello everyone! My Name is Kirsten Halstead. As an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) with more than 25 years of lactation support experience, and a Registered Nurse with over 35 years of experience in maternal child nursing, I can provide you with the care and support to help you meet your feeding goals. I understand the importance of providing support for parents as they navigate the joys and challenges of breastfeeding. It’s not always easy, but it’s worth it! Human milk is the best nutrition for baby humans, as it is specifically tailored to their needs. Breastfeeding is also a learned skill that is traditionally passed down through families. In the past, all babies were breastfed and new parents had the support of their own family members to guide them through the process. Today, many parents may not live close to their extended families, and the availability of formula has led to a decline in breastfeeding knowledge and rates. It's important to remember that breastfeeding is a natural and beautiful thing, and with the right support and resources, most parents can learn to breastfeed successfully.
Our prenatal consult includes an health history and discussion of your feedings goals. Your questions will be answered and I will provide education based on your needs. Our early postpartum in-home consult is provided during the first week to 10 days of your baby’s life. During this visit, I will assess a feeding and address any discomfort you may be experiencing. Also included is a weight check for baby. Coaching and guidance customized to your needs is sometimes all that’s needed to ensure breastfeeding gets off to a great start! Our return to work consult can help prepare you and your baby for this important milestone by providing helpful tips on pumping and storing milk, helping baby learn to take a bottle, and much more. Our ongoing lactation visits address learning needs and issues that may pop up during your breastfeeding journey with your baby. This can include growth spurts, sleep issues, adding complimentary feedings, supply questions, weaning or any other issue that you have questions or feel concerned about.
I firmly believe that sharing my knowledge in the art and science of breastfeeding is filling a niche that was long held by our mothers, sisters, aunts and grandmothers, before bottles and formulas took the place of breastfeeding. I also believe that fed is best, and that every birthing parent knows what is best for their child and for themselves. I am honored to be a part of the journey with every parent I am able to meet.
