About me
My philosophy as a midwife is rooted in both extensive personal experience and dedicated education. As a mother of five boys, including two natural births, one of which was born at home, I've lived through the very experiences I now guide others through. This invaluable perspective, combined with my Associate's in Midwifery from the MEAC Accredited Southwest Wisconsin Technical College and a Bachelor's from Texas Tech, has equipped me to serve as a midwife since 2022. I believe in fostering a supportive environment where birthing individuals feel heard, respected, and empowered to make informed choices throughout their pregnancy and birth journey.

What is a Midwife and What Kind of Care do They Provide?
A midwife is a licensed healthcare professional specializing in pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period, as well as the sexual and reproductive health of women throughout their lives. Midwives provide comprehensive care for low-risk pregnancies, including prenatal appointments, labor and delivery support, and extensive postpartum care for both parent and newborn. They often emphasize education, shared decision-making, and a holistic approach to wellness.
What is a CPM?
A CPM (Certified Professional Midwife) focuses specifically on out-of-hospital birth (home and birth center). Their training typically involves a combination of academic study and apprenticeship, followed by a national certification exam. Their scope of practice may vary by state. My education consists of a bachelor's in interdisciplinary studies including focuses in human development and family studies and psychology from Texas Tech University along with an associates degree in Midwifery from MEAC accredited Southwest Wisconsin State University.
Is Community Birth Safe?
For healthy individuals with low-risk pregnancies, planned community births (home or birth center) with a qualified midwife are widely recognized as a safe option. Research indicates comparable outcomes to hospital births for low-risk pregnancies. Safety is paramount, and midwives are highly trained to monitor for complications and initiate a transfer to a hospital if necessary.
How do you Determine if I'm a Good Candidate for Community Birth?
Our care begins with a thorough health history and comprehensive assessment to determine if you meet the criteria for a low-risk pregnancy. Factors considered include your overall health, any pre-existing conditions, previous birth history, and the progress of your current pregnancy. We maintain a collaborative relationship with local hospitals and specialists to ensure seamless transfer of care if any risk factors arise.
What Happens if there is an Emergency or Complication in Community Birth?
Midwives are extensively trained to recognize and manage emergent situations. We carry essential medical equipment and medications. In the event of a complication requiring a higher level of medical intervention, we have established protocols for safe and timely transfer to a nearby hospital, where your care will be seamlessly handed over to our collaborating physicians. Your safety and the safety of your baby are always our top priority.
Can I have Pain Management Within the Community Birth Setting?
Community birth settings typically focus on physiological birth and comfort measures that do not involve pharmaceutical pain relief like epidurals. Your midwife will offer a wide range of comfort techniques, including hydrotherapy, massage, position changes, aromatherapy, and continuous emotional support. If you desire or require pharmaceutical pain relief, a hospital transfer would be necessary.
What Makes Midwifery Prenatal Appointments Different than with an OB?
Our prenatal appointments are designed to be thorough and unhurried. Each session is scheduled for one hour, allowing ample time for comprehensive physical assessments, emotional check-ins, extensive education, and answering all your questions. We believe in building a strong relationship based on trust and shared decision-making.
What Does Postpartum Care Entail?
Our extensive postpartum care is a cornerstone of our services. We provide three postpartum visits to support your recovery and help you transition into parenthood. This includes one in-home visit within the first few days, follow-up visits at our clinic, lactation support, newborn care assessment, emotional well-being check-ins, screening for postpartum mood disorders, along with congenital heart disease screening and metabolic screenings for your newborn. We're here to ensure you feel confident and supported during this vital period.
How Does Billing and Insurance Work for Midwifery Services
We understand that understanding costs is important. We offer self-pay options and can provide a superbill for reimbursement and also offer financing through Credee if you need to extend your payments beyond the typical 34-wk payoff period. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to confirm your specific coverage for out-of-hospital birth and midwifery services. along with what your out of pocket expenses will be after covering your provider and hospital fees with an 80/20 plan. We find that these fees are usually comparable to out of pocket costs in the community setting, but do not provide the level of care you will receive with a midwife. We are also available to help you navigate this process if you have any questions.
Can My Family Be Involved in my Prenatal, Birth and Postpartum Experience?
Absolutely! Community birth strongly embraces family involvement. We encourage your partner, children (if appropriate), and other chosen support people to be an active part of your prenatal care and your birth experience at whatever level YOU desire. We will discuss your preferences and create a birth plan that includes your loved ones through your prenatal period.
