The cost of a lactation consultant in Lakeland, FL can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Certification

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) typically charge more than Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) due to their advanced training and ability to handle complex breastfeeding issues.

  • Visit Type

In-home visits generally cost more than office visits or virtual consultations. Many consultants in Lakeland offer telehealth options at reduced rates.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance will cover the cost of a lactation consultant in Lakeland, FL, depends on your specific insurance plan. Under the Affordable Care Act, many health insurance plans are required to cover breastfeeding support and counseling, including services from a lactation consultant, without cost-sharing. However, coverage details can vary, so it is important to check with your insurance provider to confirm if lactation consulting is covered, whether pre-authorization is needed, and if the consultant must be in-network. Additionally, some consultants may provide a receipt for reimbursement if they are not directly covered.

  • Number of Sessions

Some consultants offer package deals for multiple sessions, which can be more cost-effective than paying per visit, especially for ongoing breastfeeding challenges.

  • HSA and FSA Eligibility

Lactation consulting is an IRS-eligible medical expense, meaning you can use HSA or FSA funds to cover the cost without paying taxes on those dollars.

  • Experience and Specialization

Consultants with specialized expertise in areas like tongue ties, premature infant feeding, or relactation may charge higher rates.

When looking for a lactation consultant in Lakeland, FL, it's a good idea to check with your insurance provider first, as many plans cover lactation services. Interview several consultants to find one who fits your needs and budget, and ask about their specific credentials, experience, and what each session includes.

Sophia Brown RNc, BSN, IBCLC

20 years of experience

I am a registered nurse with a baccalaureate degree in nursing. Similarly an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I studied at Helene Fuld College of Nursing in NYC and received my nursing degree in 1995. My background in nursing consists of working with adults in medical-surgical, MICU and home health settings. The past thirteen years of my career consists of caring for the neonatal population, and the dyad of mother and child. This allowed me to further my training and education, having received my certification in Low Risk Neonatal Nursing and graduating from Rasmussen College with the status of Magma Cum Laude; receiving my BSN. I was inspired to become a Lactation Consultant after working in the Maternal Child Division at Tampa General Hospital. I have experienced the different challenges that so many women face with breastfeeding, and wanted to be of further help. I personally know how rewarding this experience can be having breast fed two of my three children. To achieve the status of an International Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC); in addition to my work experience I studied with Marie Biancuzzo of Breastfeeding Outlook and took a proctored international board certified exam. I have worked for two major hospitals in the capacity as a lactation consultant/neonatal nurse and similarly started my own private practice. I have volunteered at the Baby Café, attended La Leche League meetings and joined the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA), to remain current in my practice with evidence-based information. This also allows me to continue educating, encouraging and empowering the dyad of mom/ baby on their breastfeeding journey. I am passionate about supporting breastfeeding mothers with their personal goals and normalizing breastfeeding for this and following generations. It is my goal to provide lactation support and counseling whenever and wherever possible.

My husband and I decided to hire a doula a little bit reluctantly, not really knowing what we needed or how beneficial it would be. When I met Vonda, I immediately got this sense that she was caring and compassionate but yet also very competent and confident in her work as a Doula. This gave me so much comfort, and regardless of whether our goal was to deliver at home, a birth center, or hospital, she was willing to support us and our choices and not try to impose opinions on us unless we asked for them (which was huge since opinions can run very strong and extreme on opposite spectrums in the birth world). What I loved most about the idea of hiring her, beyond being able to trust her and know she was for us, was that she would be the consistency in my care from prenatal to delivery to postpartum. This birth was going to be with my second child but I was hoping to have a successful VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean) birth, so everything about labor and birth would be a new experience for me. She met with us twice during my 3rd trimester. Those meetings were incredibly informative and brought us so much peace leading up to what was foreign territory to us. She talked with us about our birth plan and let us know what our options were, taught my husband and I physical comfort techniques that could be helpful during labor, and also educated us on the birth process and what would happen to my body and with the baby during the process. Having the ability to contact her anytime after we hired her to get her input and feedback was so helpful. My husband wanted to be as involved and helpful to me as he could but he also didn't know what to expect and I didn't know what I would need, He really appreciated everything Vonda taught us beforehand, but then also having her with us during the birth to help him help me and to be our voice at the hospital since she knew our wishes and could speak for us while my mind was focused on having a baby and my husband was focused on me. Aspects of everything she prepared us for came into play when labor started, and I can't imagine going through labor and birth without having been as prepared as I felt, even when I still didn't know what to expect. Hiring Vonda as our Doula was worth every penny! I would highly recommend her to any mama AND her support person. She was there for me AND my husband, and if we did it again, we'd definitely have Vonda with us!

I cannot express enough gratitude for the incredible support I received from my doula, Valentina, throughout my pregnancy and birth. From the very beginning, Valentina was a source of unwavering encouragement, knowledge, and comfort. During my pregnancy, Valentina provided invaluable guidance on everything from prenatal care to preparing for the baby's arrival. She was always available to answer my questions, no matter how big or small, and she made sure I felt confident and informed every step of the way. Her warmth and empathy made me feel truly cared for, and her expertise gave me the peace of mind I needed. As my due date approached, I had a strong desire to achieve a natural birth. Valentina was instrumental in helping me make this dream a reality. She offered evidence-based advice on natural birth techniques and helped me create a birth plan that aligned with my goals. During labor, Valentina was a calming and reassuring presence, providing both emotional support and practical assistance. She used various comfort measures, such as massages, counter pressures and breathing techniques, to help me manage the intensity of labor. Thanks to Valentina's support, I was able to have the natural birth I had hoped for. Her belief in my ability to birth naturally and her unwavering support made all the difference. I felt empowered and strong throughout the entire process, and I couldn't have done it without her. Valentina is not just a doula; she is a true advocate and has also become a life long friend. Her dedication to her clients is evident in everything she does. I highly recommend Valentina to anyone seeking a compassionate, knowledgeable, and supportive doula. She made and continues to make a profound impact on my pregnancy as I am expecting my second baby. I will be forever grateful for her presence in my life.

I am a career nanny specializing in newborn and postpartum care, certified in all aspects of NCS, and deeply passionate about supporting families during the earliest weeks of a baby’s life. What sets me apart is my understanding of babies at their core I am trained in the Dunstan Baby Language, which allows me to recognize that babies are communicating from day one. By interpreting their cues accurately, I can meet their needs promptly, helping both baby and parents feel confident and supported. My approach to newborn care combines the attentiveness of a certified newborn specialist with the practicality and warmth of a nanny. I aim to make every family’s experience comfortable, organized, and nurturing not an extended hospital stay. I manage all aspects of nursery care, including restocking changing stations, organizing wardrobes and baby laundry, advising on items to purchase, knowing when to move up in diaper sizes, pacifiers, and bottle nipples, and managing baby nutrition and breastfeeding support. I am attentive to subtle cues for congestion, acid reflux, and other newborn concerns, providing guidance to parents with care and reassurance. Beyond the essentials, I make the most of babies’ small wake windows reading to them, doing tummy time, mirror play, floor play, and other developmental activities that are often overlooked in the newborn period. I believe these early interactions are critical for growth, bonding, and joy. I choose not to wear scrubs, preferring comfortable, professional attire that keeps the household feeling warm and approachable. I find that removing the medical atmosphere allows everyone especially other children in the home to feel at ease and keeps the energy light and positive. My goal is to provide a holistic, confident, and joyful approach to newborn care, helping families navigate this special time with calm, expertise, and heart.
