Hello, I am Karen Fleischer, or "Auntie Karen," to many of my clients. I have been serving the Bay Area (East Bay and Marin County mostly) for more than 25 years specializing in care of high needs newborns (twins and preemies) in their first 6-8 weeks of life. I support you to not merely survive the experience of becoming new parents (first, second time or more), but to thrive and enjoy these precious first few days, weeks and months of your baby's arrival. I used to be a nurse in Brazil for 16 years. I would like to proceed in this area because I have always enjoyed working with prenatal and natal stages, including babies aged 0-6 months in the hospital. I decided to concentrate more on being a doula since it encompasses more of what I love to do. I have worked as a combination of an at-home nurse and post-birth baby care for mothers fresh out of the hospital. But since moving here instead of being a nurse again, I have decided to be a certified doula.

My journey in birth work started at age 12, when I had the unique experience of catching my little sister. At age 22, I started my work as a volunteer doula in Vermont, serving members in the community who lacked support. My early volunteer work gave me a deep understanding of how hospitals function, and how to work with medical staff towards the best possible outcomes for parent and child. In 2023, I was trained and certified through DONA, with mentorship by Penny Bussell Stansfield and Dr. Teri Nava-Anderson. Having been through two training programs has given me a diverse range of strategies to draw upon in our prenatal planning sessions and during your labor and birth! I have been honored to participate in many birth stories, each with unique circumstances and goals. I have experience supporting medicated and unmedicated vaginal births, scheduled and emergent Cesarean births with first, second, and fourth-time parents, queer parents, low-income parents, autistic parents, non-native English-speaking parents, sexual assault survivors, people with depression, and parents of color. I am a member of the queer community and this has strengthened my belief that all bodies deserve respectful, compassionate, and culturally humble care.
