The cost of a lactation consultant in Edgewood, MD can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Certification

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) typically charge more than Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) due to their advanced training and ability to handle complex breastfeeding issues.

  • Visit Type

In-home visits generally cost more than office visits or virtual consultations. Many consultants in Edgewood offer telehealth options at reduced rates.

  • Insurance Coverage

Maryland Medicaid provides partial coverage for lactation care, including counseling supplied by or billed through a medical provider. Payment directly to an independent IBCLC outside a clinic or the WIC peer-counseling program remains limited. Edgewood families can choose among 61 lactation consultants within 60 miles. For private insurance, federal requirements generally call for most plans to cover breastfeeding support and breast pumps without out-of-pocket cost sharing.

  • Number of Sessions

Some consultants offer package deals for multiple sessions, which can be more cost-effective than paying per visit, especially for ongoing breastfeeding challenges.

  • HSA and FSA Eligibility

Lactation consulting is an IRS-eligible medical expense, meaning you can use HSA or FSA funds to cover the cost without paying taxes on those dollars.

  • Experience and Specialization

Consultants with specialized expertise in areas like tongue ties, premature infant feeding, or relactation may charge higher rates.

When looking for a lactation consultant in Edgewood, MD, it's a good idea to check with your insurance provider first, as many plans cover lactation services. Interview several consultants to find one who fits your needs and budget, and ask about their specific credentials, experience, and what each session includes.

Dr. Mykeshia Burton

2 years of experience

As a mother of five, healer, and birthkeeper, I bring over 22 years of experience caring for infants and young children, starting at age 13 when I cared for my nephew. As the youngest of seven siblings, I welcomed my first child, my “soul twin,” at 15; we share the same birthday, deepening our bond. I am dedicated to empowering women through holistic, nurturing, and informed birth experiences. I am the visionary founder of She Who Births All, Inc offering birth planning, herbal wellness, lactation support, and spiritual birth preparation. I also founded Bee Haven Holistic Health and Wellness Clinic, committed to whole-family care from infancy through end-of-life. With training as a Board-Certified Doctor of Natural Medicine (DNM), Doctor of Holistic Health (DHH), and Master Herbalist, I blend ancient wisdom with modern care. Currently, I study midwifery at Mercy In Action College of Midwifery. Whether birthing at home, a center, or hospital, I honor your vision with compassion and holistic support.

Dr. Burton has truly been a life saver for me and my family. After two years of trying to convince myself to seek the right kind of care, I finally found her, and I’m so grateful I did. She cared not only for me, but also for my husband and our two children when she was practicing in Indiana. She was my doula for both my very first birth and my last birth, and I couldn’t have imagined having anyone else by my side. Her presence, guidance, and support made all the difference for me and my family during those sacred milestones. Although I was saddened to hear that she was closing her Indiana location and relocating to the DMV area, I completely understand her decision as she continues advancing her education and completing her clinical preceptorship. While she now focuses specifically on Women’s Health and Maternity, I’m happy to know that I can still continue with her as a Telehealth patient. Meeting Dr. Burton in Indiana was a blessing for our household. Her compassion, knowledge, and dedication to holistic care have made a lasting impact on our health and well being. Even though her practice has shifted, I remain grateful that she was part of our journey and look forward to continuing my care with her in this next chapter.

Hello! My name is Dalaney Young. I am an Internatiomnal Board Cerified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). My goal is to help moms meet their breastfeeding goals whether the goal is for 3 weeks, 3 months or 3 years, breastfeeding is a journey and I am happy to help you tackle any bumps along the way! I believe that parenting is not a cookie cutter one size fits all endeavor, it requires thinking outside of the box and realizing what works best for you. While you may hear and read things that work for some, it may not always work for you and your family. Allow me to help develop a tailored solution for you! As a mother of five I can relate to the ups and downs of breastfeeding and parenting, every baby is unique which makes every dyad relationship different. I look forward to sharing my knowledge and education to make a plan that is right for you! I have a Bachelor's degree in Maternal and Child Health with a focus on Human Milk and Lactation Consulting. Thanks to my education and hands-on clinical experience, I was able to sit for the board exam and become an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I’ve also served as the Co-Chair of the Virginia Breastfeeding Coalition, which has been a rewarding way to give back to the profession I’m passionate about. In addition to my IBCLC certification, I hold a Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR certification, along with an infant-specific add-on certification. I’ve also completed an IBCLC Master Class focused on oral habilitation for breastfeeding, which includes in-depth training in tethered oral tissues (TOTs). For over 10 years, I’ve had the privilege of helping thousands of mamas and babies navigate breastfeeding challenges. I truly love working with families to help them feel confident in their feeding choices so they can enjoy every day with their little ones!

I want to share my strong recommendation for Val as an Overnight Newborn Care Specialist for twins. From the moment she stepped into our home, Val's expertise and compassion shone through. Throughout the nights, she skillfully managed the needs of both babies, ensuring they were well-cared for and content. Val's dedication went beyond just basic care; she provided invaluable support and guidance to us as parents. Her reassuring presence allowed us to rest easier, knowing our twins were in capable hands. I have no doubt that Val's warmth, professionalism, and genuine love for what she does make her an exceptional choice for any family seeking overnight newborn care! Lauren Choung
