What's the Cost of Hiring a Lactation Consultant in Fort Myers, FL?

The cost of a lactation consultant in Fort Myers, FL, can vary depending on the provider, the type of consultation (in-home, in-office, or virtual), and the duration of the session. On average, lactation consultants in the United States charge between $100 to $300 per session. Some insurance plans may cover part or all of the cost, so it's worth checking with your provider. If you're unable to find specific pricing for Fort Myers, this national average can be used as a reference.

The cost of a lactation consultant in Fort Myers, FL can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Certification

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) typically charge more than Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) due to their advanced training and ability to handle complex breastfeeding issues.

  • Visit Type

In-home visits generally cost more than office visits or virtual consultations. Many consultants in Fort Myers offer telehealth options at reduced rates.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance covers the cost of a lactation consultant in Fort Myers, FL, depends on your specific insurance plan and provider. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), most insurance plans are required to cover breastfeeding support, including lactation consulting, without cost-sharing. However, coverage details can vary, such as whether the consultant must be in-network or if a referral is needed. It's essential to contact your insurance company directly to confirm the coverage, including any limitations or requirements. Additionally, some lactation consultants may offer a superbill that you can submit to your insurance for reimbursement if direct coverage isn't provided.

  • Number of Sessions

Some consultants offer package deals for multiple sessions, which can be more cost-effective than paying per visit, especially for ongoing breastfeeding challenges.

  • HSA and FSA Eligibility

Lactation consulting is an IRS-eligible medical expense, meaning you can use HSA or FSA funds to cover the cost without paying taxes on those dollars.

  • Experience and Specialization

Consultants with specialized expertise in areas like tongue ties, premature infant feeding, or relactation may charge higher rates.

When looking for a lactation consultant in Fort Myers, FL, it's a good idea to check with your insurance provider first, as many plans cover lactation services. Interview several consultants to find one who fits your needs and budget, and ask about their specific credentials, experience, and what each session includes.

I cannot recommend Taylor enough! She met with me prenatally and helped me feel truly prepared and confident going into my breastfeeding journey. She took the time to educate me on everything I needed to know, helped me collect colostrum before delivery, and made sure I was set up to pump both in the hospital and once I returned home. What meant the most to me was her support throughout every stage of my journey, even when things didn’t go according to my original plan. After an unexpected C-section and a very difficult recovery, I combo fed for the first week before ultimately deciding to transition to formula feeding. Through it all, she never made me feel judged or pressured, only supported. She was there for me not just with feeding guidance, but also through all of the emotional ups and downs that come with feeding your baby as a first-time mom. Her compassion, knowledge, and encouragement made such a difference during one of the most vulnerable times in my life.
