The cost of a midwife in New Bedford, MA can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Midwife

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who work in hospital settings may have different pricing than Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) who attend home births or birth center deliveries.

  • Birth Setting

Hospital births with a midwife typically cost less out-of-pocket when covered by insurance, while home births and birth center deliveries may have different fee structures.

  • Scope of Services

Many midwives offer comprehensive packages that include prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, and postpartum care, which can affect the overall cost.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance covers the cost of a midwife in New Bedford, MA, depends on your specific insurance plan and provider. Many insurance plans, including Medicaid in Massachusetts, do cover midwifery services, especially if the midwife is licensed and works within a healthcare network. Coverage may vary based on whether the midwife delivers at home, a birth center, or a hospital. It’s important to contact your insurance provider directly to confirm what is covered under your plan and ensure the midwife you choose is in-network to avoid unexpected costs.

  • Experience and Specialization

Midwives with extensive experience, additional certifications, or specializations such as VBAC support or water birth may charge higher rates.

  • Geographic Location

Midwifery costs can vary based on the cost of living and demand for midwifery services in your specific area.

When considering hiring a midwife in New Bedford, MA, it's advisable to research and interview several midwives to find one who aligns with your birth plan, preferences, and budget. Yaffa and I love working as a team! Here's a recent review from a birth doula client: From the first time we met Shira, we felt more at ease about our birthing time. Upon meeting Shira it is obvious how sweet, caring, and smart she is. Shira is very knowledgeable about pregnancy and birth, and she is super humble about her approach. She is here for you to answer your questions and make you feel prepared and comfortable. She doesn't push any personal agenda, she is a calm and peaceful presence who will guide you like a warm mother would, and with confidence. Shira is open minded. She was directly by my side taking my lead during my first birth, and both of our first HypnoBabies experience. She was the expert support and extra hands I needed alongside my husband. I had mostly back labor and she helped with counter pressure, positioning, and movement for 24+ hours! She said yes to all any any requests I had. When I decided to get an epidural/induction, she helped make that choice easier. She constantly shared my birth plan with the hospital staff to ensure everyone was on board with my vision so I didn't have to. It was very reassuring having her there and I truly couldn't have done it without her. The birth ended up being absolutely beautiful, magical, and a holy experience that I would be lucky and blessed to do over and over again. Thank you Shira!!

With over 30 years of experience in child care—including 16 years as a center director—I began my work as a postpartum doula in 2018. As a mom of three grown children (including two retired service members) and a proud new grandmother, I bring both professional expertise and personal insight to every family I support. I love helping new moms navigate the fourth trimester with confidence, combining my training and hands-on experience to make a meaningful difference in their transition. Supporting families during this special time is truly my passion. I’m here to answer your questions and walk alongside you on this beautiful journey.

I cannot recommend Blissful Sleep enough! We have used them twice now, and their timeliness and reliability really stood out compared to other services we’ve tried. The doulas are natural at soothing and caring for babies, and they were incredibly helpful with establishing routines. Beyond just childcare, they did dishes, washed bottles and pump parts, and helped with other chores, which gave us more time for sleep. We appreciated how flexible they were. They always adjusted to whatever we needed that specific morning—some days that meant letting the baby sleep as long as possible, and other days they had her changed and fed so she was ready for our morning rush to school/ work. If our baby didn't need anything in the morning they would brew coffee and read to the older kiddos. They go above and beyond to support the whole family.

My midwife story began with the home births of my own children. They inspired me to share the transformative experience of owning my birth, finding my own path, and becoming Me. I began my home birth midwifery journey through traditional apprenticeship, where I was more or less self taught. I embarked on a journey which took me halfway across the world to a charity birth clinic in the Philippines. Then I returned again to my mini-farm in Connecticut where I raised and home schooled my three children and ran a small community practice. Over a span of 15 years, my experiences included solo practice, busy group practice, and birth center, blending of traditional midwifery with formalized education. In 2025, I graduated from Midwives College of Utah and earned my credential as a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). Currently I work in solo practice, supporting families in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and eastern Connecticut with holistic, personalized pregnancy care, home birth, postpartum and newborn care with all visits in your own home.

When I was looking for a midwife for my second pregnancy and first home birth, I wasn’t sure what to look for. After interviewing a few midwives, Cynthia really stood out to me. From the beginning, I felt like she genuinely wanted to get to know me and understand my previous birth experience. She made me feel heard and supported right away. I especially appreciated that she offered a FaceTime meeting so I could see her beforehand, and I loved how she included my daughter in that first interaction. Having a three-year-old, it made such a difference that Cynthia offered home visits, it took away the stress of bringing a child to appointments. I knew I wanted a home birth, but I had never truly envisioned what that would look like. Cynthia was incredibly patient and helped guide me in creating the birth experience I wanted. She supported me in having the kind of pregnancy and birth that felt right for me. She is very knowledgeable and was always available to answer questions or just talk things through. One of my favorite parts was how she included my daughter in every appointment, letting her help, listen to the baby’s heartbeat, and taking the time to talk and play with her. It made the experience so special for our whole family. When it came time for my birth, I had a “go with the flow” mindset, and Cynthia fully supported me in that. I felt safe, respected, and cared for the entire time. I also truly appreciated the postpartum care. It was personal, calming, and far more attentive than the standard six-week follow-up. Cynthia made sure both baby and I were doing well with multiple visits after the birth. I had such a wonderful experience with Cynthia. I would highly recommend her to anyone considering a home birth, and I will absolutely be using her again in the future.
