The cost of a midwife in Norfolk, VA can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Midwife

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who work in hospital settings may have different pricing than Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) who attend home births or birth center deliveries.

  • Birth Setting

Hospital births with a midwife typically cost less out-of-pocket when covered by insurance, while home births and birth center deliveries may have different fee structures.

  • Scope of Services

Many midwives offer comprehensive packages that include prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, and postpartum care, which can affect the overall cost.

  • Insurance Coverage

Virginia Medicaid covers prenatal, birth, and postpartum care provided by certified nurse-midwives for Norfolk residents, as federal rules require all state Medicaid programs to include these services. Coverage for licensed or certified professional midwives at home or in birth centers depends on the individual Medicaid plan and is not assured for every member. The local market is modest, with four midwives listed within 60 miles of Norfolk. Private insurance coverage also varies by policy and provider network.

  • Experience and Specialization

Midwives with extensive experience, additional certifications, or specializations such as VBAC support or water birth may charge higher rates.

  • Geographic Location

Midwifery costs can vary based on the cost of living and demand for midwifery services in your specific area.

To have Chelsea Shira as my midwife was a dream! She gave us so much space to be as minimal as we desired, and if something came up where we needed tests/info/intervention she was fully equipped and able to get us connected to where we needed to be. I’ve delivered two home births with Chelsea and both times I was amazed with her peaceful disposition during labor, and extreme expertise during crucial situations. With our 2nd homebirth my 11 lb son had shoulder dystocia and I was so thankful for the knowledge, skill and critical thinking she expressed in those crucial moments. Additionally, my son came out not breathing for several minutes and she was able to administer oxygen and resuscitate him. In moments like those when every minute is so precious, I’m deeply grateful for a midwife like Chelsea who was there to support us and take real action. My words can’t express enough how incredible my experience with Chelsea is and how thankful I am for the way she practices. Very communal and home spun, yet seriously equipped with life saving knowledge when you need it!

When my husband and I were seeking a doula, we initially selected Mylah due to the affordability of her services. However, we were pleasantly surprised to find that she consistently exceeded the original scope of her responsibilities. She genuinely demonstrates care for her clients, at least that was certainly our experience. Without delving into excessive detail, employing a doula was a crucial decision for support during this pregnancy. I have historically encountered difficulties advocating for myself with various medical professionals, my family, my workplace, and virtually all aspects of my life. I had grown quite weary of these challenges, but Mylah was instrumental in making this entire journey a success for us. She remained steadfast in her support, never dismissing my feelings, and consistently checking in on my husband and me, even inquiring about our son to see how he was adjusting. We dedicated months to crafting the birth plan, and she provided me with videos and feedback on exercises to prepare my body for the approaching day. When circumstances necessitated a medically induced labor, she maintained her composure. Adapting to the situation and providing the stability we needed for a successful unmedicated labor followed by a medicated vaginal birth. It is safe to say that without her, I do not believe I would have mentally navigated this pregnancy well. Previously, although I couldn't articulate it at the time, I experienced the onset of postpartum depression shortly after my son's birth. This time, despite being connected to a continuous infusion of IV medications, experiencing minor bleeding after birth, receiving significantly less support from other sources, and encountering numerous additional challenges, I can joyfully state that I am thriving, not merely surviving. I am uncertain how the remainder of this year will unfold, but I am confident that I will genuinely cherish the memories of my daughter's birth and newborn days. Thank you, Mylah, for helping me positively reframe my previous birth experience. You will always hold a special place in our hearts. To any of my friends or colleagues who may require a doula, I will wholeheartedly recommend your services.

A Little About Myself My name is Elise Osmun, I grew up in a small town in southern Oregon with my parents and three siblings. Over the last ten years I have made many moves in my life. My family and I left Oregon to live in San Diego California where I then attend San Diego State University to obtain a Bachelors in Psychology. While working as a professional nanny for years, I gained a beautiful community of families, mothers, and babies. I had the pleasure of meeting a doula who suggested I volunteer at the hospital birthing center to see how I liked it. I fell in love with the Doula world and went on to obtain my certification. While going through the program I realized the many other certifications that would be beneficial in helping as many people as possible. I have met my life partner and decided to join his military lifestyle. After a few moves we now have a long term home in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I have always had a strong passion for supporting families during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. Each family has their own way of parenting, needs, and values. My goal is to support you in having a non-judgmental, informed, and respected birth experience. I am committed to getting to know you throughout your pregnancy, and creating a close relationship with you before that special day. It would be an honor to support & comfort you during these most intimate and sacred moments of your life!
