I have always loved babies. At family gatherings you would usually find me snuggling the newborns and entertaining the other kiddos. It wasn’t until I gave birth in 2015 that something shifted and I was living the postpartum experience myself. I realised that yes, I loved all things birth and I consider myself a certified birth nerd, but there was something missing. I had just had this huge transformation but everyone just wanted to hold my baby. Who was holding me? That part of your story matters. Hi my name is Madi, and I’m a mixed Acadian/Migmaw birth and end-of-life doula in the Edmonton area. I decided to become a birth worker and end-of-life doula because I believe every single person deserves an advocate. Every person deserves autonomy and the right to make decisions. Every person should be allowed access to traditional medicines. Trained through DONA, I have practiced as a birth worker for about two years. I have serviced births in every Edmonton hospital, and I have experience with at home water births. Birthing to me is a sacred act that should be seen as just that - sacred. It is beautiful, incredibly difficult, joyful and life-changing. When it comes to my end-of-life, I have been certified as an Indigenous End of Life doula via Lifting Their Minds End-of-Life Indigenous Doula Training. Since I can remember, I have always found deep love and interest in the perinatal period. My first encounter with pregnancy and birth occurred when I was very young; my mum showed me the 1995 film Nine Months, directed by Chris Columbus, starring Julianne Moore and Hugh Grant, and I was hooked! Essentially, I watched any movie or TV show (that I was aware of) that featured the perinatal period. Some of the shows that I have watched countless times are One Born Every Minute (Channel 4) and Call The Midwife (BBC One). I bring the film and shows up because it is an integral part of the story that led me to become a doula; it kept the spark alive long enough for me to find a way forward into working within the birth and postpartum world. Then, when I went to Mount Royal University to get my Bachelor of Arts degree, it only felt natural to accompany it with a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies, so I see myself as a certified feminist (lol). I have always believed that people are entitled to feel empowered during their birth, and with that comes support, which is where I come in. As your doula, it is my job to support you and your birthing team throughout the duration of your birth. I will never make decisions on your behalf or try to influence your choices, but I will support you in making those decisions, and yes, that includes postpartum care. I will hold space for you and your support team, and I will do my best to help you advocate for your wishes. I understand that the perinatal period is a very vulnerable time, and I feel honoured and blessed to be able to accompany you on your journey.
