What's the Cost of Hiring a Lactation Consultant in Richmond, VA?

The cost of a lactation consultant in Richmond, VA, can vary depending on the provider and the type of service (in-home consultation, virtual consultation, or clinic visit). Typically, lactation consultants charge between $100 and $300 per session. Some insurance plans may cover part or all of the cost, so it is worth checking with your provider. If specific information for Richmond, VA, is unavailable, the average cost for lactation consultants in the U.S. falls within this range.

The cost of a lactation consultant in Richmond, VA can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Certification

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) typically charge more than Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) due to their advanced training and ability to handle complex breastfeeding issues.

  • Visit Type

In-home visits generally cost more than office visits or virtual consultations. Many consultants in Richmond offer telehealth options at reduced rates.

  • Insurance Coverage

Insurance coverage for a lactation consultant in Richmond, VA, depends on your specific health insurance plan. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), many plans are required to cover breastfeeding support and counseling, which may include services provided by a lactation consultant, without cost-sharing. However, the extent of coverage can vary based on your plan, network restrictions, and whether the consultant is certified or in-network. It's best to contact your insurance provider directly to confirm coverage details, including any limitations or requirements for receiving these services.

  • Number of Sessions

Some consultants offer package deals for multiple sessions, which can be more cost-effective than paying per visit, especially for ongoing breastfeeding challenges.

  • HSA and FSA Eligibility

Lactation consulting is an IRS-eligible medical expense, meaning you can use HSA or FSA funds to cover the cost without paying taxes on those dollars.

  • Experience and Specialization

Consultants with specialized expertise in areas like tongue ties, premature infant feeding, or relactation may charge higher rates.

When looking for a lactation consultant in Richmond, VA, it's a good idea to check with your insurance provider first, as many plans cover lactation services. Interview several consultants to find one who fits your needs and budget, and ask about their specific credentials, experience, and what each session includes.

Katie Skaggs BSN, RNC-MNN, IBCLC, CEIM, CFT Provider Hi! I'm Katie and I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and a Bachelor's prepared Registered Nurse certified in Maternal/Newborn Nursing. I am a Certified Educator of Infant Massage, and I am trained in Craniosacral Fascial Therapy. I spent 13 years working in-patient with families during these precious first days of meeting their new baby, and now I have my own private practice. Every day is different with new challenges and unique family dynamics, but it is always an honor to be part of their journey. Each of us has our own path that leads us to where we are, and I truly feel this is what I am meant to be doing — supporting women, nurturing families, and helping you to achieve your goals whatever they may be. I am a mother to two boys, and while I did breastfeed them both, it was not without challenges. A dear friend and IBCLC came to my home to help me during that time and I was so incredibly grateful for her help and guidance. She changed our trajectory, and it was in this moment I knew I would pay this gift forward someday. Something fun about me is that this is my second chapter. I spent my first 10 years after high school dancing professionally for the Richmond Ballet. While in many ways it feels like a completely different world, it provided me with an incredible work ethic, a desire to understand how the physical body works, and the realization that to connect with other humans you too have to be vulnerable.

Update! I’ve had 3 postpartum visits with Katie and they have been amazing! We went from almost exclusively pumping and occasionally breastfeeding with a nipple shield to confidently latching without using a shield. Katie is so warm and helpful and it feels like a friend visiting. I could not be more grateful for Katie’s help in successfully launching my breastfeeding journey! I am so excited to work with Coming Home. I just had my prenatal appointment with Katie and she was so warm and knowledgeable. She helped me understand what the first few days postpartum will be like and even measured me for flange size and taught me how to use my pumps. I am so excited to continue to work with Katie as we welcome our baby into the world in a few weeks! I am so grateful my insurance covers lactation consulting and would highly recommend any moms to be to use Coming Home!

I'm a certified postpartum doula and certified breastfeeding specialist living in Richmond, VA. I've been doing this work for over 11 years, and I feel so honored to walk the early months of life with a new baby or babies alongside the families I serve. It's a beautiful, vulnerable time full of questions, joys, and concerns, and I love supporting families through all of it. I have extra training and expertise in supporting breastfeeding/chest feeding, since so many of parents' early concerns revolve around feeding, and there is not enough good lactation help available to most families. I work with first-time parents and those expecting their second, third, or more babies- everyone's needs are a bit different, but everyone can use extra hands and a listening ear during this time of transition. I would love to chat with you to get to know you and your family!

Erica was a tremendous help to our family! We welcomed our first child over the summer and had no idea what we were doing as first time parents. Erica helped us with the transition in so many ways. She went above and beyond our expectations and not only provided care for the baby and helped with housework, but frequently checked in on my recovery physically, mentally, and emotionally. Her knowledge about breastfeeding was invaluable--I know my breastfeeding success is largely due to her support and knowledge in those early days when I wasn't sure what I was doing. Securing her help before the baby arrived paid dividends in so many ways!

Hi, I’m Siedah Israel, a Certified Labor Doula, Holistic Wellness Practitioner, and Certified Herbalist based in Fredericksburg in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. I’m a wife of 15 years and a homeschooling mother of five. My wellness and birth advocacy journey began with earning a certificate in Massage Therapy from Eastern Virginia Career College in 2018. I later completed my Doula Certification through Germanna Community College in 2024 and graduated with honors in Herbal Studies from the American College of Healthcare Sciences in 2025. I am currently in Phase I of the PEP process as I work toward becoming a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). I have extensive experience supporting families through hospital births, birth center births, and home births. Personally, I have experienced three hospital births and two home births, which deeply informs the care, perspective, and support I offer to the families I serve. When I’m not supporting families, I enjoy homeschooling, spending time outdoors with my children, writing poetry, working on my werewolf novel, and handcrafting natural hair and skincare products. It is a true honor to walk alongside families with compassion, cultural awareness, and grounded support during such a sacred season of life.

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Siedah Israel. From the very beginning, she was incredibly professional, knowledgeable, and trustworthy, which immediately put me at ease. She truly goes above and beyond for her clients—never making you feel like “just another appointment,” but instead offering genuine care, patience, and support every step of the way. It’s clear that this isn’t just a job for her; she sincerely loves what she does, and that passion shows in the way she advocates, reassures, and shows up wholeheartedly. Her presence made such a meaningful difference in my experience, and I am so grateful to have had her by my side. I would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone looking for a doula who is both deeply compassionate and exceptionally professional.

I am a postpartum doula certified through DONA International, a lactation consultant trained through The Healthy Children Project, and a Ayurvedic masseur certified through The California College or Ayurveda. I’m a personal chef that specializes in postpartum nutrition and have a catalogue of frozen stews, broths and soups to choose from if you need inspiration for your meal planning. I meet prenatally to help organize the home, nursery and any other members of the support team. (Outlining responsibilities and expectations is work that is best done in advance.) I provide a newborn care class and a lactation class as well as meal prep for soups, stews and broths to be frozen. I always encourage my clients to try to book me for a visit right after the birth while in the hospital for lactation support and a modified version of my Ayurvedic massage. Once the family is home I cook nourishing foods rich in iron, protein, collagen, micro and macro nutrients to aid in recovery from depletion and help speed healing. (I also have a Postpartum Soup Bundle that can be purchased ahead of time.) I do dishes, laundry and of course provide even more lactation support. I can also simply care for the newborn while parents sleep. After the first few weeks the focus tends to shift into finding a daily rhythm, newborn care techniques and education on developmentally appropriate sleep habits for the baby. I also help parents with planning childcare help. I can be a sleep consultant one day and provide a massage the next. Maybe I play with the older children while mama naps with the newborn. Sometimes the work is just to sit and talk about all the things that the parents are struggling with. My job and my life’s joy is to simply be an extra set of hands or a sympathetic ear to new parents.

As a first time mom there was so much to learn and understand, but working with Inga made it flawless for my Husband and I to prepare for our little one and with the Lords help! We would have not known what to do if we didn’t have Inga’s help! The breathing techniques are superb it works and it helps! I was able to breathe through pitocin with no medication up to level 14, and even after having to get an epidural that suddenly stopped working completely. I was back to feeling the pain from the pitocin on full blast and in transition all I could do was call on Jesus through the breathing techniques Inga has demonstrated for us. We highly recommend Inga her determination, commitment, compassion, and kindness, knowledge, and wisdom is what a family needs during preparing for as she would say “the ride of your life” because that’s exactly what it is and then it’s a bliss of pure love. Overall our birth experience was worth it and we would do it all over again especially with the help of Inga. We couldn’t thank you enough Inga you are truly blessed with a gift and we thank you for allowing us to receive it!
