Frequently asked questions

Do you accept insurance or Medicaid?

At this time, I am a private-pay doula and do not bill insurance or Medicaid. Flexible payment plans are available for select services and birth packages.

When should I hire a birth doula?

You can reach out at any point during your pregnancy! Many families reserve doula support during the second trimester, but I welcome inquiries later in pregnancy when availability allows. A retainer is required to reserve your estimated due date.

What happens if I go into labor while you’re working your full-time job?

I believe in being transparent about my availability. Because I also work full-time, I maintain a limited birth caseload and use backup-doula support when necessary. Your support and backup plan will be discussed during your consultation so you know exactly what to expect before booking.

Do you only support unmedicated or natural births?

Not at all! I support the birth that is right for you. This may include an unmedicated birth, epidural, induction, planned or unexpected Cesarean birth, or a birth experience that changes along the way. My role is to provide education, comfort, emotional support, and advocacy while respecting your choices.

Will you replace my partner during labor?

No. I work alongside partners and encourage their involvement at whatever level feels comfortable. I can help partners understand comfort techniques, positioning, ways to provide reassurance, and how they can stay involved throughout labor.

What does postpartum doula support include?

Postpartum visits are personalized to your family’s needs and may include emotional support, newborn-care assistance, feeding support within my scope, parent education, light baby-related household assistance, and giving parents time to rest, shower, eat, or adjust to their new routine. I currently offer scheduled weekend daytime visits, some weekday evenings and do not provide overnight postpartum care.

What does full-spectrum doula support mean?

Full-spectrum doula care recognizes that people may need compassionate support throughout many different reproductive experiences. My services include fertility and conception support, pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and abortion support. I do not currently provide bereavement, loss, or end-of-life doula services.

Do you provide medical advice or make decisions for clients?

No. A doula is a non-medical support professional. I provide education, resources, emotional and physical support, and help you communicate your preferences and questions with your healthcare team. Medical decisions and clinical care remain between you and your healthcare providers.

How much does Shanel charge?

Shanel's PRENATAL OR POSTPARTUM MOVEMENT SESSION package is $60 USD, flat rate. Shanel lists 9 packages in all.
