What's the Cost of Hiring a Lactation Consultant in Baltimore, MD?

The cost of a lactation consultant in Baltimore, MD, can vary depending on factors like the consultant's experience, the type of service (in-home visits versus virtual consultations), and session length. On average, lactation consultants in the United States charge between $150 and $350 for an initial consultation, which typically lasts 1-2 hours. Follow-up visits may cost between $75 and $200. Some insurance plans may cover part or all of the cost, so it’s worth checking with your provider. If specific information for Baltimore is unavailable, this national average can be a helpful reference.

The cost of a lactation consultant in Baltimore, MD can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Certification

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) typically charge more than Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) due to their advanced training and ability to handle complex breastfeeding issues.

  • Visit Type

In-home visits generally cost more than office visits or virtual consultations. Many consultants in Baltimore offer telehealth options at reduced rates.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance covers the cost of a lactation consultant in Baltimore, MD, depends on your specific insurance plan. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), many insurance plans are required to cover breastfeeding support, including lactation consultants, without cost-sharing. However, coverage details vary by insurer, and some may only cover services provided by in-network consultants or require a referral. It's important to contact your insurance provider to confirm what lactation services are covered, whether a specific consultant is in-network, and any required documentation for reimbursement.

  • Number of Sessions

Some consultants offer package deals for multiple sessions, which can be more cost-effective than paying per visit, especially for ongoing breastfeeding challenges.

  • HSA and FSA Eligibility

Lactation consulting is an IRS-eligible medical expense, meaning you can use HSA or FSA funds to cover the cost without paying taxes on those dollars.

  • Experience and Specialization

Consultants with specialized expertise in areas like tongue ties, premature infant feeding, or relactation may charge higher rates.

When looking for a lactation consultant in Baltimore, MD, it's a good idea to check with your insurance provider first, as many plans cover lactation services. Interview several consultants to find one who fits your needs and budget, and ask about their specific credentials, experience, and what each session includes.

I loved my experience with Alisha. From the start to the ending. Talking to her about the pregnancy use to bring me comfort. She gave me plenty of resources while pregnant and after I gave birth. During birth she was extra supportive. Even tho my birth plan did not go as plan she stuck by myself my whole c section and held my hand. 23 hours in labor she kept me calm bringing games and everything to keep my mind calm. I just overall appreciate her and if I ever had another baby I would want her as my doula again. 5 stars isn’t enough to rate her. She more like a million stars. Thank you so much for the experience and the comfort you bought through out the experience. And I appreciate you.

Hello! I'm Lauren Wist the founder of Lactation with Lauren. I am a RN since 2009 at a large birthing hospital in Maryland and an IBCLC for the last 8 years and counting. I work in-patient in the hospital as a lactation consultant and am starting to provide care in families' homes to provide continued support. I love that each family I work with has their own story and their own journey. There are hard days and there are thriving days - I am honored to be part of each situation as we find the next right thing and reach personalized goals. When I am not using my IBCLC skills I love to spend time with my husband, 3 school aged kids, and young standard poodle. We enjoy visiting extended family members spread out along the East Coast, hiking in Patapsco State Park and traveling by airplane to new places when we have extra time together.

I had a great experience working with Lauren! I reached out after being unsure how to completely wean the rest of my milk supply. My son was mostly weaned and only breastfeeding for a few minutes at a time, about twice a day. I was pumping to fully drain, but was confused on how to stop producing milk without getting mastitis. Then came Lauren! Not only was she very helpful and gave me confidence in being able to fully stop producing, but she was empathetic and so kind towards me in this special time of life. I immediately began implementing the steps to stop producing milk and I completely dried up in about a week, comfortably and confidently! Lauren also provided help with how to soothe my son through this change, which was greatly appreciated! Huge thanks to Lauren on helping me transition to a new stage of motherhood!

Dale was my instructor through the MaternityWise Doula Program back in 2018. The moment I spoke with her, I knew I’d chosen the right path. She kept in constant contact and made sure I was fully prepared for class. Her teaching went beyond the binder—she shared the real ins and outs of the doula business, the birth experience, and answered every question. She opened up about her own life so we could see how being a doula fits into everyday life. One experience changed my life: Dale walked me through attending my first birth and gave me the confidence to take charge. She was also present for the birth of my last baby in 2019. When she arrived, she immediately made me feel calm and empowered. The doctors and nurses respected her so much—they even waited for her to arrive before breaking my water and asked for her approval. It was such a powerful moment. It was an honor that she cut my baby’s cord. Dale is the best and will always have my family’s love and respect

Tamika was truly exceptional. From the moment we met, her warmth put me completely at ease. I was struggling with milk production after a traumatic delivery, and breastfeeding felt overwhelming. Tamika stepped in with genuine care—making time for me, even doing home visits, and guiding me every step of the way. She would email me notes on our visits with links to websites to help me better with my pumping and whatever else I needed. She was quick to respond to any queries I had about my new born even if it was not related to breastfeeding. She’s incredibly professional but also brings a friendly, comforting vibe that makes you feel supported and understood. She does this work out of love, and it shows in everything she does. It’s rare to find someone so passionate and committed. Her heart is truly in the right place. I honestly don’t know what I would have done without her help. Highly, highly recommend!

Thank you so much for stopping by! My journey to birth work began in 2017, following the birth of my first baby. I have been a fully certified childbirth educator and doula since 2018. Additionally, I recently obtained my Certified Breastfeeding Specialist certificate (CBS) from Lactation Education Resources in October 2025. Prior to getting into birth work, I attended Notre Dame of Maryland University, where I studied biology and graduated with high honors. I have since become a mother of 2. Both of my children were born without intervention and at home. When not working, I can be found reading for pleasure, exercising, doing yoga, hiking, or gardening. I reside in Bowie, MD and serve clients within a 50-mile radius of my home.

Kristen was my doula while I gave birth at George Washington University Hospital in DC. I waited until the last minute to book a Doula, so we only had one prenatal visit and then the actual labor. She was incredibly helpful at the prenatal visit and very attentive to me and my husband’s questions. She has a wonderful personality that is very kind and easy to get along with and you know she’ll make sure your needs are met. She took time to explain methods we would try — I wanted a natural unmedicated birth, and she showed my husband how he could assist and be involved. We also reviewed some exercises and stretches for me to begin preparing with. I had a complication that led to me needing to be induced early (and my birth plan went right out the window of course). We called Kristen once I was 5cm dilated as it happened in about an hour and a half and she got there quickly and stayed with me the rest of the time. Even with an epidural she was able assist me in trying different positions, managing the pain and weathered the 4.5 hours of pushing before I ultimately had to have a C section. She worked wonderfully with the slew of staff that was in and out of our room during that time and advocated for me when the cesarean was first brought up and I was adamant about trying to avoid it. Though it wasn’t the birth I imagined, Kristen was incredibly reaffirming and encouraging to me calming my anxiety of things out of my control. Highly recommend!

Sarah Early

18 years of experience
Accepts insurances

Sarah Early has over thirty years of working in the healthcare industry. Her career has taught her about the importance of supporting women with a mind, body, and spirit approach as women learn to care for their health while also addressing their family’s healthcare needs. Sarah worked in a busy Maryland hospital that delivered ten-thousand babies annually and it was here where she began to focus her time on maternal-child care and lactation. During this time, Sarah interacted with countless new parents struggling to feed their newborn and lacking the guidance or resources necessary to do so successfully. These families and their frustrations inspired Sarah to gain the IBCLC credential in 2011 and open Lactation Room in 2014. Lactation Room has been a staple of lactation and infant feeding support in Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia for a decade and Sarah and her team of IBCLCs, Registered Nutritionists, Nurses, and Doulas have cared for thousands of families along their new parenting journey. Lactation Room was the first practice in the DMV to expand offerings through insurance and now has three office locations to improve access to care. It was important to Sarah that quality and evidence-based care be attainable and not cost-prohibitive allowing women to receive the care they deserve and need. In 2016 she co-hosted the first collaborative conference for tongue-and-lip ties (TOTS) in the DMV bringing together hundreds of people from multiple disciplines. The conference attendees included IBCLCs, Nurses, Physicians, Feeding Therapists, Bodyworkers, Dentists, and more. Her philosophy is that there are many facets to care, and when the approach is team-based and collaborative, the patients receive better quality care and outcomes. She has presented the collaborative model for infant feeding dysfunction at Simon Says Speech, Talk Tools Speech & Feeding Therapy, Southern Maryland Dental Society, and multiple local hospitals and area organizations. Sarah graduated from a Masters in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner graduate program with high distinction and was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nurses while working and running Lactation Room. Her clinical education and training paved the way for her newest journey in private practice, Peony Women’s Integrative Health, which she opened in 2023. Working as a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner she serves clients in the DMV. Peony WIH focuses on caring for women with a root-cause, integrative, and functional medicine approach to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. PWIH provides in-office health consults with Sarah, integrative and functional nutrition support by a Registered Dietician, and Craniosacral therapy services. Sarah is focused on addressing the needs of women in the community through a patient-centered and collaborative approach to care. She is an active member of ILCA, USLCA, IATP, AHNA, AANP, and MBC. hello@peonywih.com

Abbie is so wonderful! We did our first appt at home and a follow up in her office which was so comfortable and welcoming. As a FTM, Abbie helped me get setup for success with regular feeds and pumping. I wasn’t having and “issues” but wanted to be preventative and I’m SO glad I did, I learned so much. Also her follow up notes were detailed which was so helpful referring back to them for different things. Highly recommend!
