What's the Cost of Hiring a Midwife in Brooklyn, NY?

The cost of a midwife in Brooklyn, NY can vary widely depending on factors such as the midwife's experience, the type of care provided, and whether the services are covered by insurance. On average, hiring a midwife for prenatal care, delivery, and postpartum support can cost between $4,000 and $8,000 for out-of-hospital births. Some midwives who offer home births or birthing center services may charge within this range as a package deal. If the midwife is covered by insurance, your out-of-pocket costs may be significantly lower. It's best to contact midwives directly to inquire about their specific fees and payment options.

The cost of a midwife in Brooklyn, NY can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Midwife

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who work in hospital settings may have different pricing than Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) who attend home births or birth center deliveries.

  • Birth Setting

Hospital births with a midwife typically cost less out-of-pocket when covered by insurance, while home births and birth center deliveries may have different fee structures.

  • Scope of Services

Many midwives offer comprehensive packages that include prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, and postpartum care, which can affect the overall cost.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance covers the cost of a midwife in Brooklyn, NY, depends on your specific insurance plan and the midwife’s credentials. Many insurance plans, including Medicaid in New York, cover midwifery services, especially if the midwife is a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) who is licensed and works within a healthcare system or birthing center. However, coverage for home births or services from Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) or other types of midwives may be more limited or not included. It's essential to contact your insurance provider to confirm coverage details, including in-network providers and potential out-of-pocket costs.

  • Experience and Specialization

Midwives with extensive experience, additional certifications, or specializations such as VBAC support or water birth may charge higher rates.

  • Geographic Location

Midwifery costs can vary based on the cost of living and demand for midwifery services in your specific area.

When considering hiring a midwife in Brooklyn, NY, it's advisable to research and interview several midwives to find one who aligns with your birth plan, preferences, and budget. During consultations, you can discuss their specific services, insurance acceptance, and pricing structure to ensure you have a clear understanding of what is included and the associated costs.

Nubia Jones

I’m Nubia, a mom of five teens & young adults. I’m an experienced certified birth doula CD(DONA), postpartum doula, parent educator, certified breastfeeding counselor (CLC), an integrative nutrition health coach (IIN) and a student midwife. Mothers deserve to be respected, heard and nurtured doing this major transition in life to becoming a mom, whether its for the first time or the 8th time! I’m a strong advocate for mothers and families birthing in all settings including hospital, home & birth centers. I respect the many choices in mothering and parenting. It's an honor to walk the path of mothering with women as they navigate the many options we have today. I strongly believe in the woman's ability to grow, birth and nourish her baby with her natural, innate abilities while also respecting the need or preference of medical support along the way. It's all about the balance of holistic & medical. My journey supporting women and families began in 2000. After birthing with midwives, I decided to develop a working relationship at the birth center where my children were born. At this free-standing birth center, I served on the board of directors and led support groups for the expectant families and breastfeeding moms. In 2012, my career as a doula took off as I volunteered my services for many families in my hometown, Washington, DC. In 2015, my family relocated and I began serving a diverse population throughout New York and New Jersey where I’m currently practicing, along with a team of equally skilled perinatal professionals. On my spare time I enjoy relaxing on the Jersey Shore beaches, traveling internationally, cooking, dancing, spending time in nature, and enjoying quality time with my teenage and young adult children. I spent a couple of years living abroad and off the beaten path with my children and their dad. It was the most rewarding life experience to date. I plans to serve as a birthworker internationally, as well, so that I can merge my love for international travel and serving mothers.

When I got connected with Marissa, I just knew she was the right doula for me. I know there’s no such thing as perfect, but my spirit truly aligned with hers. I trusted God and felt at peace not choosing a backup doula, even though I had interviewed three. And I have no regrets. I was induced at 37 weeks, so I wasn’t able to fully follow my birthing plan. However, we had discussed it in depth, and she knew exactly what I wanted. Marissa was firm, supportive, and confident which I deeply appreciated. She wasn’t afraid to speak up for me. She made sure to ask me if decisions being made were truly what I wanted and ensured I understood everything happening. She also made sure she had all the information just like I did. I felt completely comfortable and safe with her. I didn’t feel like I had to track or manage everything because I knew she was doing that. She made sure I had water, juice, crackers everything I needed. I’m not used to being taken care of. I’m usually the strong friend, the one who handles everything on my own. So when Marissa was putting chapstick on my lips, socks on my feet, rubbing my back, and helping me stay comfortable, it honestly shocked me in the best way. It meant more than I can explain. Yes, she’s a doula but to me, it never felt like just a job to her. It felt genuine, loving, and intentional. I will always adore and appreciate her for how she showed up for me during one of the most important moments of my life.

I am a mother to a 5 year old and have loved children since I was a child myself. I have always been someone who enjoys helping people. I started on the path towards nursing, earning my Associate’s degree in Fall of 2022. After mostly completing my degree in summer of 2022, I realized my personality wouldn't shine in nursing. I am more empathetic and personable, which lead me to becoming a doula. I started with birth doula in August and it opened my eyes to my passion for birthwork. Shortly after, I took the postpartum doula workshop. That led me to also taking infant CPR, and earning a certified lactation support counselor as well. I am looking forward to sitting for the Lamaze CBE exam Fall of 2023. I have worked with families both prior to these certifications and currently and I can’t wait to explore and learn more

Antasia was an incredible support for my husband and I when we needed overnight care for our newborn. After interviewing many people, we had been turned off by those who were strict about their approach and seemed to want to impose their practices on our family. As new parents, we needed tenderness and flexibility—someone who would care for our son at night and allow us to sleep peacefully knowing our son was safe and being tended to the way we choose to raise him. Antasia was a calm and responsive presence, working with us to adapt to changes as our newborn developed and we grew as parents. She was always on time and communicated proactively in the rare instance there was a scheduling issue. At the start of every visit she asked us what changed and what was new, which was helpful as newborns change on a weekly basis and so did our approach. We were always at peace knowing Antasia was coming. I also was able to recover from insomnia due to Antasia’s presence and my confidence in her to look after our child while we slept. Our only regret was not meeting her sooner so we could have had her with our family on day 1 coming home from the hospital.

Joan Sherwood

Joan Sherwood

31 years of experience

I am Joan Sherwood, founder of Peaceful Beginnings To You. My calling to become a doula was born from a personal experience. During the birth of my child, I was left alone in a hospital room without any support. My spouse and brother were sent home because I was not in active labor. My water had broken, so I was admitted, and I faced the daunting process of labor alone, in a secluded area until it was time to push. This experience, where I delivered a 9 -pound, 2-ounce baby without my loved one's present, ignited my passion to ensure that no other person would have to endure such solitude. My journey as a doula began 25 years ago when I assisted a family member through labor. Since then, I have been a source of support and guidance for family and friends, which eventually led me to pursue certification as a birth doula through DONA International. I am deeply committed to holistic birth and postpartum care, and my extensive training reflects this dedication. My education includes a Family Development Credential, studies at the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, the Center for Homeopathic Education, and the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences. I am also a certified Calm Birth Instructor, Infant Massage Instructor Trainer, Womb Sauna Practitioner, and have received postpartum training from Indigemama, BirthMama, Traditional Postpartum Practitioner, and Birth Arts International. My approach to doula care is centered on the needs of the laboring person. I come with no preconceived notions, and I remain as fluid and flexible as possible to meet the evolving needs of each individual. In addition, to running my private doula practice, I have provided doula care to underserved communities as a doula and doula mentor for a federally funded program in Brooklyn.

Joan was my doula for both my pregnancies, one in 2014 for my now 8 year old and again during the pandemic for my 2 year old. I highly recommend Joan she provided such consistent support during both pregnancy, while birthing and postpartum. I was so fortune because Joan is just naturally resourceful and intuitive and she was right by my side every step the way. To this day I consider her such an empowering and beautiful human being and I am thankful that she was with me on my journey into motherhood -- I would choose her again and again and again!!!

We had such a great experience with Chandel as our postpartum doula after welcoming our first baby. She was incredibly responsive and always easy to reach, which was so reassuring during those early weeks. Chandel made us feel comfortable right away and fit so naturally into our home and routine. Her calm, supportive presence helped us feel more confident as new parents. She shared helpful advice, answered our questions, and offered support in a way that never felt overwhelming or pushy. We truly enjoyed having Chandel as part of our first postpartum experience and are so grateful for the care and support she provided. We would absolutely recommend her to any family looking for a kind, knowledgeable, and dependable postpartum doula.

She was truly a blessing during my pregnancy and birth. From the moment we met, she filled me with positive affirmations that helped me feel calm and confident—especially while I was giving birth. This was the easiest birth I’ve ever had, thanks to the exercises she taught me before labor started. She also gave me helpful resources to keep me and my family safe. And I absolutely love the nourishing recipes she shared for my postpartum recovery—they made me feel cared for and supported.

No one really prepares you for postpartum as a dad. I thought we’d just figure it out, but those first weeks were harder than I expected. My wife was exhausted, and I didn’t always know how to help in the ways that actually mattered. Getting support through Briie and her team made a huge difference. Having someone experienced in our home brought calm and structure when we needed it most. It gave my wife space to recover and gave me the confidence to step up. I’m really glad we didn’t try to just tough it out.
