Hi, I’m Andrea Carter—founder of It Takes a Village, midwife, mother, and passionate birth advocate. Originally from Gary, Indiana, I made Dallas my home in 2015. Though I dreamed of becoming an OB/GYN as a child, it was my own powerful birth experiences that led me to step into the world of natural birth and begin my journey as a doula in 2016. ​Since then, I’ve had the honor of walking alongside over 160 families as a doula and supporting more than 300 families as a student midwife. I am a proud 2023 graduate of Southwest Technical College, and today I serve families as a staff midwife at Swiss Avenue Birth and Wellness Center, in addition to offering homebirth services throughout the DFW metroplex.​ ​ ​​ As a mother of four—each born naturally—I understand the beauty, strength, and vulnerability of birth firsthand. I love for my families to have all of the facts and then they make the best decision for them. I enjoy journeying with families through birth and postpartum. I'm a proud mama of two smart, rambunctious boys. I love to cook for and spend quality time with my family and friends. When birthing schedule allows, I also love travelling. I found my way to being a doula after the birth of my second baby. Though my pregnancy and birth were perfectly planned and perfectly played out, I had nothing setup and prepared for postpartum. Two days after I gave birth I was up making myself breakfast, getting my oldest off to school, and driving myself and new baby to his first pediatric appointment. I felt alone and isolated. Many days I would just cry from being overwhelmed. I told my doula and lactation consultant that as soon as I was healed I would train to be a postpartum doula so that no other families nor mom would have to suffer in silence. Now, as a birth and postpartum doula, I get to make sure that moms can have the birth they want, and a peaceful, sustainable life after their sweet baby has arrived. As a doula I have, and will help my parents with any questions they may have before birth, and after. No question is off limits, so I want them to feel comfortable to speak on anything that is causing an issue of doubt for them. I’m a breastfeeding educator, so I can also help parents get a good latch after baby is born, and I’m a true supporter of getting baby to latch within the first hour after they are born.
