Because of the challenges nurses face in hospital settings, I did not have the time or resources to provide this level of support to families. I’m Hallie, the founder and CEO of Better Beginnings. My passion for supporting women and families through the incredible transformation into parenthood began with my own journey. After experiencing the challenges of the postpartum period with my first two children, I felt called to create a resource that could make this transition smoother and more supportive for others. That’s how Better Beginnings was born. Today, I’m proud to lead one of Minnesota’s premier teams for postpartum doula and lactation support. My name is Cherie Schmidt. I am a licensed RN in the state of Minnesota. I retired a year ago as a triage nurse in an OB/GYN office. I worked there for 11 years. I have worked in Neonatal ICU, Newborn Nursery, did mother/baby nursing, and was a board certified lactation consultant and practiced for 10 years with inpatient and outpatient clients. I have been a doula for close friends. The goal is to have a healthy mom, baby, and help the partner get through pregnancy, childbirth, and new parenting. I also want to help children get through the experience of being a new sibling. I have been attended hundreds of deliveries and have taught prenatal classes. This position gives me joy. My name is Maggie Mau, and I am a mom of two girls and two very sweet rescue pups, Hopper and Eleven. My partner is a longtime teacher for Saint Paul Public Schools and we have lived in the South Como neighborhood in Saint Paul for the last 15 years! As a family we enjoy camping, hiking and exploring our country’s beautiful national parks. It is not odd to find us hammocking up at Como park, picking mulberries and reading :) I enjoy running, gardening, reading and baking and hosting regular gatherings of family and friends. I have been in the Twin Cities nonprofit sector my whole career, and the passion that I feel for the success of individuals and families in our community is now being carried forward in a different, but equally important way – through the support and empowerment of families as they navigate their birth journeys. Hello! My name is Elizabeth Block, I’m a certified postpartum doula and IBCLC serving the twin cities! I’ve always had a calling to work with babies, when I found doula work that passion grew deeper. I fell in love with caring for the mother-baby dyad and supporting new moms in anyway I could to make their 4th trimester the most blissful it could be. I love caring for the family unit in the biggest adjustment period. I became an IBCLC to reach more families to empower, educate and support moms in what their bodies are made to do. After completing a B.S. at the University of Minnesota and a stint living in France, I started working as a consultant for our local utility companies, implementing an energy efficiency program for new home construction. By this time I was deep into a yoga practice and took a yoga teacher training at Yess Yoga in 2018. I learned so much and it exposed me to many holistic practices within the 8 limbs of yoga. Meanwhile, my all-female consulting team started expecting. They would come to the office with so much new information and questions after doctor/midwife appointments, not to mention what everyone was saying on the internet! I was so curious about it all! I discovered what a doula was and that people did it as a profession. Not long after I am happy to say I found a doula training and haven’t looked back.
