What's the Cost of Hiring a Midwife in Post Falls, ID?

In Post Falls, ID, a midwife typically costs about $2,000 to $6,000 for prenatal, labor, delivery, and postpartum care with a certified nurse-midwife or certified professional midwife, while hospital-based midwife care may fall closer to $3,000 to $9,000 depending on whether the provider bills separately from the hospital; home births attended by a midwife often range from about $4,000 to $8,000 total, and birth center deliveries are commonly around $3,000 to $7,000, with final out-of-pocket cost varying based on insurance coverage, lab work, ultrasounds, and whether physician backup or hospital transfer is needed.

The cost of a midwife in Post Falls, ID can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Midwife

Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) who work in hospital settings may have different pricing than Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) who attend home births or birth center deliveries.

  • Birth Setting

Hospital births with a midwife typically cost less out-of-pocket when covered by insurance, while home births and birth center deliveries may have different fee structures.

  • Scope of Services

Many midwives offer comprehensive packages that include prenatal visits, labor and delivery support, and postpartum care, which can affect the overall cost.

  • Insurance Coverage

In Post Falls, ID, insurance often covers some or all of a midwife’s services, but coverage depends on your specific plan, whether the midwife is licensed and in-network, and whether the care is for prenatal visits, hospital birth, birth center birth, or home birth; many private plans and Medicaid cover certified nurse-midwives more often than home-birth midwives, and out-of-pocket costs can range from little to nothing after deductibles and copays to several thousand dollars if the provider is out of network or home birth is excluded, with full midwifery care commonly billed in the range of about $2,000 to $9,000 nationally.

  • Experience and Specialization

Midwives with extensive experience, additional certifications, or specializations such as VBAC support or water birth may charge higher rates.

  • Geographic Location

Midwifery costs can vary based on the cost of living and demand for midwifery services in your specific area.

When considering hiring a midwife in Post Falls, ID, it's advisable to research and interview several midwives to find one who aligns with your birth plan, preferences, and budget. During consultations, you can discuss their specific services, insurance acceptance, and pricing structure to ensure you have a clear understanding of what is included and the associated costs.

Maddie was our doula for our first baby and oh my gosh I can’t say enough good things about her. She’s very communicative through the whole process of getting to know her and sharing our desires for our birth plan. She was incredible during labor providing the perfect support based on what we wanted. She‘s a great cheerleader, as well as guide and willing to approach the powerful experience applying strategies that work best for you and your family. Specifically, I‘m an athlete and I really wanted a 'coach-like' mindset and Maddie nailed it providing all the encouragement and visualization I needed for such a smooth and beautiful birth of my baby. Highly recommend Maddie!

I had an incredibly intense experience in April 2024 when I gave birth to my son. I had planned to deliver at a midwifery center, but after arriving there in labor, it was believed that my labor had stalled, so I was sent home to rest. After a few hours of sleeping through contractions, I woke up in the middle of the night realizing that my baby was coming much sooner than expected. I immediately called Sam, and she arrived at my house within minutes. We initially planned to head back to the midwifery center, but it quickly became clear that I wasn’t going to make it in time. We moved into the bathroom, and I could feel my baby descending. In that moment, it was just the two of us. I had an overwhelming urge to push, and with one push, Sam calmly caught my baby. She remained composed as she gently unwrapped the cord from around his neck, wrapped him in warm towels, and helped stimulate him to cry. Her calm presence, quick thinking, and skill made all the difference in such a critical moment. I truly believe that without her there, the situation could have turned out very differently. I am beyond grateful for her care and for the way she supported me through such an intense and unforgettable experience.

Darby Merritt LM, CPM As a small-town local, I have a deep love for all things old-fashioned and being rooted in community. After spending many years on the road, my husband and I feel blessed to have settled in the PNW. We’re raising five growing children who are the light of our lives, with a focus on a deeply rooted, home-centered life—fostered at home through growing our own food, homeschooling, and spending as much time together as this beautiful life allows. Work Life – I’ve been attending births in a variety of roles since 2012. In 2016, I graduated from AAMI Midwifery School, and have been attending births ever since in a variety of roles. I currently hold an active CPM credential and am a licensed midwife in both Washington and Idaho. I maintain current certifications in Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP) and CPR/BLS, and I pursue continuing education each year to expand my skills and deepen my understanding of holistic health. Supporting families through the sacred journey of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum brings me profound purpose and joy. I believe in the strength of women and families, the power of autonomy, and the importance of true informed consent. It is an honor to walk alongside families during these life-changing moments.

I would highly recommend Darby as a midwife! As a first time mom she was so informative and gave me all the knowledge I needed at every appointment. She aligned so well with my views of wanting a natural, calm, as God designed birth. My birth experience was long and intense as are many but she always remained calm and collected. Giving me assurance that my body would do as it was created to. She embodies knowledge, a sense of calm, and an excitement for new life. She stands by a women’s right to choose how her birth and baby will be brought into this world. Thank you Darby, I look back at my birth with awe of my body and what it can do through patience and perseverance. I wouldn’t change a thing.
