What's the Cost of Hiring a Lactation Consultant in Spotsylvania, VA?

In Spotsylvania, VA, a lactation consultant typically costs about $100 to $300 for an initial private consultation, with follow-up visits often ranging from $75 to $200; home visits can be higher, sometimes $150 to $350 depending on travel and session length. Hospital- or clinic-based support may be less expensive, and some insurance plans cover part or all of the cost, especially for in-network providers.

The cost of a lactation consultant in Spotsylvania, VA can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Certification

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) typically charge more than Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) due to their advanced training and ability to handle complex breastfeeding issues.

  • Visit Type

In-home visits generally cost more than office visits or virtual consultations. Many consultants in Spotsylvania offer telehealth options at reduced rates.

  • Insurance Coverage

Yes—many health insurance plans, including those commonly used in Virginia, often cover lactation consultant services to some extent, especially for breastfeeding support before and after birth, but the amount covered depends on whether the consultant is in-network, the type of visit, and your specific plan; under the Affordable Care Act, many plans must provide breastfeeding support and counseling without cost-sharing, though some limit coverage to certain providers or settings, and in practice families may still see out-of-pocket costs if the consultant is out-of-network or offers home visits, with typical private-pay rates often around $100 to $300 per session and sometimes higher for extended or in-home care, so coverage in Spotsylvania is likely possible but not guaranteed at 100% unless the provider and service meet your plan’s requirements.

  • Number of Sessions

Some consultants offer package deals for multiple sessions, which can be more cost-effective than paying per visit, especially for ongoing breastfeeding challenges.

  • HSA and FSA Eligibility

Lactation consulting is an IRS-eligible medical expense, meaning you can use HSA or FSA funds to cover the cost without paying taxes on those dollars.

  • Experience and Specialization

Consultants with specialized expertise in areas like tongue ties, premature infant feeding, or relactation may charge higher rates.

When looking for a lactation consultant in Spotsylvania, VA, it's a good idea to check with your insurance provider first, as many plans cover lactation services. Interview several consultants to find one who fits your needs and budget, and ask about their specific credentials, experience, and what each session includes.

Siedah Israel

Accepts insurances

Hi, I’m Siedah Israel, a Certified Labor Doula, Holistic Wellness Practitioner, and Certified Herbalist based in Fredericksburg in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. I’m a wife of 15 years and a homeschooling mother of five. My wellness and birth advocacy journey began with earning a certificate in Massage Therapy from Eastern Virginia Career College in 2018. I later completed my Doula Certification through Germanna Community College in 2024 and graduated with honors in Herbal Studies from the American College of Healthcare Sciences in 2025. I am currently in Phase I of the PEP process as I work toward becoming a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). I have extensive experience supporting families through hospital births, birth center births, and home births. Personally, I have experienced three hospital births and two home births, which deeply informs the care, perspective, and support I offer to the families I serve. When I’m not supporting families, I enjoy homeschooling, spending time outdoors with my children, writing poetry, working on my werewolf novel, and handcrafting natural hair and skincare products. It is a true honor to walk alongside families with compassion, cultural awareness, and grounded support during such a sacred season of life.

Siedah listened to me, and that made all the difference. I don’t think I could’ve had the natural birth I did without her encouraging me every step. She is very comforting, down to earth, and knowledgeable.

I'm a certified postpartum doula and certified breastfeeding specialist living in Richmond, VA. I've been doing this work for over 11 years, and I feel so honored to walk the early months of life with a new baby or babies alongside the families I serve. It's a beautiful, vulnerable time full of questions, joys, and concerns, and I love supporting families through all of it. I have extra training and expertise in supporting breastfeeding/chest feeding, since so many of parents' early concerns revolve around feeding, and there is not enough good lactation help available to most families. I work with first-time parents and those expecting their second, third, or more babies- everyone's needs are a bit different, but everyone can use extra hands and a listening ear during this time of transition. I would love to chat with you to get to know you and your family!

Erica was a tremendous help to our family! We welcomed our first child over the summer and had no idea what we were doing as first time parents. Erica helped us with the transition in so many ways. She went above and beyond our expectations and not only provided care for the baby and helped with housework, but frequently checked in on my recovery physically, mentally, and emotionally. Her knowledge about breastfeeding was invaluable--I know my breastfeeding success is largely due to her support and knowledge in those early days when I wasn't sure what I was doing. Securing her help before the baby arrived paid dividends in so many ways!

Katie Skaggs BSN, RNC-MNN, IBCLC, CEIM, CFT Provider Hi! I'm Katie and I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and a Bachelor's prepared Registered Nurse certified in Maternal/Newborn Nursing. I am a Certified Educator of Infant Massage, and I am trained in Craniosacral Fascial Therapy. I spent 13 years working in-patient with families during these precious first days of meeting their new baby, and now I have my own private practice. Every day is different with new challenges and unique family dynamics, but it is always an honor to be part of their journey. Each of us has our own path that leads us to where we are, and I truly feel this is what I am meant to be doing — supporting women, nurturing families, and helping you to achieve your goals whatever they may be. I am a mother to two boys, and while I did breastfeed them both, it was not without challenges. A dear friend and IBCLC came to my home to help me during that time and I was so incredibly grateful for her help and guidance. She changed our trajectory, and it was in this moment I knew I would pay this gift forward someday. Something fun about me is that this is my second chapter. I spent my first 10 years after high school dancing professionally for the Richmond Ballet. While in many ways it feels like a completely different world, it provided me with an incredible work ethic, a desire to understand how the physical body works, and the realization that to connect with other humans you too have to be vulnerable.

Update! I’ve had 3 postpartum visits with Katie and they have been amazing! We went from almost exclusively pumping and occasionally breastfeeding with a nipple shield to confidently latching without using a shield. Katie is so warm and helpful and it feels like a friend visiting. I could not be more grateful for Katie’s help in successfully launching my breastfeeding journey! I am so excited to work with Coming Home. I just had my prenatal appointment with Katie and she was so warm and knowledgeable. She helped me understand what the first few days postpartum will be like and even measured me for flange size and taught me how to use my pumps. I am so excited to continue to work with Katie as we welcome our baby into the world in a few weeks! I am so grateful my insurance covers lactation consulting and would highly recommend any moms to be to use Coming Home!

Dr. Burton has truly been a life saver for me and my family. After two years of trying to convince myself to seek the right kind of care, I finally found her, and I’m so grateful I did. She cared not only for me, but also for my husband and our two children when she was practicing in Indiana. She was my doula for both my very first birth and my last birth, and I couldn’t have imagined having anyone else by my side. Her presence, guidance, and support made all the difference for me and my family during those sacred milestones. Although I was saddened to hear that she was closing her Indiana location and relocating to the DMV area, I completely understand her decision as she continues advancing her education and completing her clinical preceptorship. While she now focuses specifically on Women’s Health and Maternity, I’m happy to know that I can still continue with her as a Telehealth patient. Meeting Dr. Burton in Indiana was a blessing for our household. Her compassion, knowledge, and dedication to holistic care have made a lasting impact on our health and well being. Even though her practice has shifted, I remain grateful that she was part of our journey and look forward to continuing my care with her in this next chapter.
