I’m Chaya, a DMV native, proud mama of three, Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), student midwife, and birth worker with a deep passion for supporting families through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. My journey into birth work began in 2019 when I earned my CNA license, NRP/CPR certification, and full-spectrum doula certification. I originally entered nursing with the goal of becoming a labor and delivery nurse, but in 2020, I began apprenticing as a student and birth assistant alongside a local home birth midwife. That experience completely shifted the way I viewed birth and helped me develop a deeper appreciation for physiologic, intrinsic birth and the importance of protecting a birthing person’s autonomy. Since then, I’ve continued growing both in nursing and midwifery. I became a Licensed Practical Nurse while continuing my education toward my ultimate goal of becoming a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM). I’ve also spent several years working in a local hospital’s Labor & Delivery unit while running Nova Birth & Wellness, which has allowed me to experience birth from both the clinical and community-based sides of maternity care. As a doula, placenta encapsulation specialist, birth photographer, student midwife, nurse, and perinatal advocate, my heart has always been centered around supporting mothers during one of the most sacred and vulnerable seasons of their lives. Over the years, I’ve had the honor of attending more than 200 births in different roles, and every experience has continued to strengthen my passion for this work. While I have a special love for natural, physiologic birth, I believe there is no single “right” way to give birth. Every person deserves to feel informed, respected, supported, and in control of the decisions surrounding their body and their baby. Whether someone chooses a home birth, hospital birth, epidural, induction, cesarean, or an unmedicated birth, my role is to help them understand their options and feel confident in the path that feels right for them. Advocacy is at the core of everything I do. My goal is to create a relationship built on trust, safety, and genuine connection so my clients know they can confide in me, depend on me, and feel completely supported during such an intimate time in their lives. Many of the relationships I’ve formed with families have grown into lasting friendships, which is one of the things I value most about this work. My dream is to become a CNM and eventually open my own practice where I can provide families with compassionate, evidence-based, autonomous maternity care and offer the option of home birth—the same kind of empowering experience I was blessed to have with my own children.

As a young child, I found my way to birth before I had language for it. At five years old, I was guiding my dolls through labor, sitting with them, speaking softly, staying close. I didn’t understand what I was doing then, but something in me already knew. There was a quiet pull toward women in this moment of becoming. As I grew older, that pull deepened. I became fascinated by the power held in pregnancy, birth, and the early days after. The way a body carries, protects, and nourishes life. The way a baby makes their way into the world. The way a mother changes forever once they meet. It felt sacred, ancient, and deeply familiar. I often imagined myself surrounded by ancestors and loved ones, witnessing prayers and dreams taking form as new life arrived. What followed birth felt just as powerful to me. Watching a mother soften and strengthen at the same time. Watching intuition awaken. Watching love root itself in ways that cannot be taught. Mothers and babies choosing one another. A love story that begins again and again. For years, I was visited by dreams. Women from all walks of life birthing their babies. In each dream, I was there. Holding hands. Offering comfort. Showing up in a way understood only by women and the spirits who have always walked with us. The dreams didn’t stop until I finally listened. I became a certified birth and postpartum doula and stood alongside more than two hundred families. I have been a sister, an aunt, a steady presence in moments of fear, release, and joy. I’ve wiped tears, celebrated feeding breakthroughs, and watched parents grow into themselves. To be clear, I don't possess any special power; I merely hold the flashlight as parents navigate and uncover their own. Beyond my work, I am a mother to three humans who shape me every day. My oldest is deeply nurturing, a true revolutionary who speaks with power and purpose. My son teaches me how to slow down and feel, how to think bigger, how to trust what feels impossible. And my youngest, known by her Ghanaian uncle as “The Queen Mother,” leads with her whole spirit. She chases the wind, climbs trees, jumps in puddles, tends the garden, and mothers our chickens and ducks with ease. I started my child care journey as a babysitter 13 years ago. I have worked as a nanny for the last 10 years and as an NCS for the last 6 years. I have looked after children as young as 2 days old to 14 years of age. As an NCS, I have experience working with multiples, preemies, and reflux challenges. I can help with creating a schedule and sleep training. I am also trained as a Postpartum doula.
