I am a 25 year old mother of two, and my journey into becoming a doula is deeply rooted in my own birth experiences. I’ve had both a hospital birth and two unassisted, natural home births, which gave me a well-rounded perspective on how powerful and capable women are when they feel supported, safe, and heard. During my first birth in a hospital setting, I found myself having to advocate strongly for my own choices, which opened my eyes to how essential it is for mothers to have someone in their corner. What led me to this work is my belief that mothers deserve to be at the center of their birth experience. While the focus often shifts to the baby, a mother’s physical, emotional, and mental well being is just as important especially during and after delivery. Birth environments, particularly hospitals, can sometimes feel chaotic or overwhelming, but with the right support and advocacy, they can also be calm, respectful, and empowering spaces. I understand that while many women desire home births, not all have that option, especially in higher risk situations. As a doula, my role is to help create a peaceful, supportive atmosphere wherever birth takes place, while ensuring that each mother’s voice is heard, respected, and honored throughout her journey.

After retiring from a long career of working with children and families, I became a professional doula. I wanted to support and nurture birthing persons during this sacred time of their lives. I wanted to offer sacred holistic services to them, youth, and communities by partnering with them as they learn more about holistic reproductive wellness. I also wanted to educate them about the importance of preventive reproductive health care, maternal health justice, trauma-informed quality childcare, equity and advocacy, childbirth education and basic lactation support through coaching, training, and mentoring not only birthing persons but the community and new doulas. I’m Katie Galvin, Postpartum Doula and Certified Functional Diagnostic Nutritional Practitioner. After my own experience with “postpartum anxiety & depression,” (which was really undiagnosed postpartum thyroiditis) I decided to become a functional practitioner to help other moms navigate common postpartum hormonal changes using a holistic approach. Conventional medicine often fails new moms by dismissing their concerns or offering pills as the only solutions to common (but not normal) symptoms like: anxiety, depression, irregular/heavy/painful periods, insomnia, hot flashes, etc. There are better options! I use functional lab testing to identify imbalances in the body and help bring it back into balance through functional nutrition and lifestyle changes so moms can get back to feeling their best!
