The cost of a lactation consultant in Fredericksburg, VA can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Certification

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) typically charge more than Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) due to their advanced training and ability to handle complex breastfeeding issues.

  • Visit Type

In-home visits generally cost more than office visits or virtual consultations. Many consultants in Fredericksburg offer telehealth options at reduced rates.

  • Insurance Coverage

Often yes—many health insurance plans cover lactation consultant services, especially under the Affordable Care Act, which requires most plans to provide breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment during and after pregnancy, though the amount covered in Fredericksburg, VA depends on your specific insurer, whether the consultant is in-network, and whether visits are prenatal, in-home, virtual, or in-office; in practice, some families pay nothing out of pocket for covered visits, while private-pay rates commonly run about $100 to $300 per session, with in-home visits often costing more, and Medicaid coverage may also be available in some cases, so the main factors are your plan benefits, referral requirements, and network status.

  • Number of Sessions

Some consultants offer package deals for multiple sessions, which can be more cost-effective than paying per visit, especially for ongoing breastfeeding challenges.

  • HSA and FSA Eligibility

Lactation consulting is an IRS-eligible medical expense, meaning you can use HSA or FSA funds to cover the cost without paying taxes on those dollars.

  • Experience and Specialization

Consultants with specialized expertise in areas like tongue ties, premature infant feeding, or relactation may charge higher rates.

When looking for a lactation consultant in Fredericksburg, VA, it's a good idea to check with your insurance provider first, as many plans cover lactation services. Interview several consultants to find one who fits your needs and budget, and ask about their specific credentials, experience, and what each session includes.

Hi, I’m Siedah Israel, a Certified Labor Doula, Holistic Wellness Practitioner, and Certified Herbalist based in Fredericksburg in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. I’m a wife of 15 years and a homeschooling mother of five. My wellness and birth advocacy journey began with earning a certificate in Massage Therapy from Eastern Virginia Career College in 2018. I later completed my Doula Certification through Germanna Community College in 2024 and graduated with honors in Herbal Studies from the American College of Healthcare Sciences in 2025. I am currently in Phase I of the PEP process as I work toward becoming a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). I have extensive experience supporting families through hospital births, birth center births, and home births. Personally, I have experienced three hospital births and two home births, which deeply informs the care, perspective, and support I offer to the families I serve. When I’m not supporting families, I enjoy homeschooling, spending time outdoors with my children, writing poetry, working on my werewolf novel, and handcrafting natural hair and skincare products. It is a true honor to walk alongside families with compassion, cultural awareness, and grounded support during such a sacred season of life.

I truly do not know what I would have done without Siedah, and I believe I amucky to have found her for my second birth. As someone who has gone through a traumatic birth experience my first pregnancy, I knew I needed some additional support outside of my husband. But, let's talk about the process even before birth. Months before giving birth, Siedah reminded me and helped me re-process my trauma. Made me really think about how I wanted things to go this time around. To make me confident as well in asking questions about my care and babies care. I feel like that was a huge part in the success of my second birth experience. Fast forward to the actual birth, Siedah asked all the healthcare staff the right questions, or had them re-explain what was going on. I did have to be induced as I had pre-eclampsia. Everything went so smooth, it was exactly how I imagined it. Not to mention how fast it all went too! Siedah has such a big heart, and you can tell she truly cares about you; wants what is best for you too! She treats you like family, and reminds you to choose yourself which can be hard sometimes to remember when you're a mom. You won't regret having her by your side.

Katie Skaggs BSN, RNC-MNN, IBCLC, CEIM, CFT Provider Hi! I'm Katie and I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and a Bachelor's prepared Registered Nurse certified in Maternal/Newborn Nursing. I am a Certified Educator of Infant Massage, and I am trained in Craniosacral Fascial Therapy. I spent 13 years working in-patient with families during these precious first days of meeting their new baby, and now I have my own private practice. Every day is different with new challenges and unique family dynamics, but it is always an honor to be part of their journey. Each of us has our own path that leads us to where we are, and I truly feel this is what I am meant to be doing — supporting women, nurturing families, and helping you to achieve your goals whatever they may be. I am a mother to two boys, and while I did breastfeed them both, it was not without challenges. A dear friend and IBCLC came to my home to help me during that time and I was so incredibly grateful for her help and guidance. She changed our trajectory, and it was in this moment I knew I would pay this gift forward someday. Something fun about me is that this is my second chapter. I spent my first 10 years after high school dancing professionally for the Richmond Ballet. While in many ways it feels like a completely different world, it provided me with an incredible work ethic, a desire to understand how the physical body works, and the realization that to connect with other humans you too have to be vulnerable.

Update! I’ve had 3 postpartum visits with Katie and they have been amazing! We went from almost exclusively pumping and occasionally breastfeeding with a nipple shield to confidently latching without using a shield. Katie is so warm and helpful and it feels like a friend visiting. I could not be more grateful for Katie’s help in successfully launching my breastfeeding journey! I am so excited to work with Coming Home. I just had my prenatal appointment with Katie and she was so warm and knowledgeable. She helped me understand what the first few days postpartum will be like and even measured me for flange size and taught me how to use my pumps. I am so excited to continue to work with Katie as we welcome our baby into the world in a few weeks! I am so grateful my insurance covers lactation consulting and would highly recommend any moms to be to use Coming Home!

Sarah Early

Sarah Early

18 years of experience

Sarah Early has over thirty years of working in the healthcare industry. Her career has taught her about the importance of supporting women with a mind, body, and spirit approach as women learn to care for their health while also addressing their family’s healthcare needs. Sarah worked in a busy Maryland hospital that delivered ten-thousand babies annually and it was here where she began to focus her time on maternal-child care and lactation. During this time, Sarah interacted with countless new parents struggling to feed their newborn and lacking the guidance or resources necessary to do so successfully. These families and their frustrations inspired Sarah to gain the IBCLC credential in 2011 and open Lactation Room in 2014. Lactation Room has been a staple of lactation and infant feeding support in Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia for a decade and Sarah and her team of IBCLCs, Registered Nutritionists, Nurses, and Doulas have cared for thousands of families along their new parenting journey. Lactation Room was the first practice in the DMV to expand offerings through insurance and now has three office locations to improve access to care. It was important to Sarah that quality and evidence-based care be attainable and not cost-prohibitive allowing women to receive the care they deserve and need. In 2016 she co-hosted the first collaborative conference for tongue-and-lip ties (TOTS) in the DMV bringing together hundreds of people from multiple disciplines. The conference attendees included IBCLCs, Nurses, Physicians, Feeding Therapists, Bodyworkers, Dentists, and more. Her philosophy is that there are many facets to care, and when the approach is team-based and collaborative, the patients receive better quality care and outcomes. She has presented the collaborative model for infant feeding dysfunction at Simon Says Speech, Talk Tools Speech & Feeding Therapy, Southern Maryland Dental Society, and multiple local hospitals and area organizations. Sarah graduated from a Masters in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner graduate program with high distinction and was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nurses while working and running Lactation Room. Her clinical education and training paved the way for her newest journey in private practice, Peony Women’s Integrative Health, which she opened in 2023. Working as a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner she serves clients in the DMV. Peony WIH focuses on caring for women with a root-cause, integrative, and functional medicine approach to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. PWIH provides in-office health consults with Sarah, integrative and functional nutrition support by a Registered Dietician, and Craniosacral therapy services. Sarah is focused on addressing the needs of women in the community through a patient-centered and collaborative approach to care. She is an active member of ILCA, USLCA, IATP, AHNA, AANP, and MBC. hello@peonywih.com
