During Hurricane Katrina, while at a family reunion, my family suffered complete devastation losing eight homes. Despite this tragedy, I felt compelled to help. I was deputized by the Red Cross And remain in Louisiana for three months where I developed and lead a disaster assessment team specializing in logistics, a system still in use today. Strangely enough this experience is what first led me into caregiving a career where it is I have never felt more alive or purposeful. Hello Families! I am a full spectrum perinatal care worker specializing in lactation and postpartum doula support. I am certified as a lactation counselor from UCSD and a DONA trained Doula. I believe in providing evidence based care while integrating holistic methods that have been passed down between women for generations. I began working with women and children in 2011 as the Executive Director of The Live Well Project. From there I took my passion abroad and lived in Nepal for 6 months working with local families and learning first hand how they supported birthing mothers. I have always had a passion for working with children and families. I grew up on a small island in the heart of the Florida Keys. From an early age, I began babysitting and nannying. Once I graduated from high school, I decided to major in Early Childhood Education with a minor in Psychology. I earned my bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and returned to the Keys to teach elementary school. For 10 years, I worked with many families and children of different ages and abilities, including those with special needs. During this time, I also began practicing yoga and as cliché as it may sound, yoga changed my life. It has provided me with an outlet to focus the mind, control the breath, and explore and appreciate the body. I decided that I wanted to share the powerful and lasting benefits of this practice with others. I have studied hatha, vinyasa, yoga philosophy, meditation, standup paddleboard yoga, and pregnancy + postnatal yoga. It was during my pregnancy + postnatal yoga training that I became interested in becoming a doula. I felt compelled to find a way to provide much needed support for individuals and families before, during, and after birth. I decided then, to pursue a new life and career path. I trained through DONA International to become a certified birth and postpartum doula.
