I want to share my experience because I think it’s important for other families to understand not only the care they may receive, but also how insurance and payment arrangements are handled. Before hiring Joanne, I specifically asked about TRICARE. I was told that she accepted TRICARE and that I would be provided with a superbill so I could submit the claim for reimbursement. Based on that information, I felt comfortable moving forward and paid out of pocket for six postpartum doula visits. Unfortunately, when I submitted the claims, TRICARE denied them. The Explanation of Benefits stated that the provider needed to have the appropriate labor doula specialty and a participation agreement on file. When I contacted TRICARE to understand the denial, I was told that the provider needed to have the required participation agreement and that the provider was responsible for submitting the claims. This was very different from what I understood before hiring Joanne. I had relied on the information I was given when deciding to proceed and pay for the services. Had I known there might be an issue with her TRICARE status, participation agreement, or claim-submission process, I would have asked additional questions and clarified everything before paying. I reached out to Joanne to explain what TRICARE had told me and to ask for clarification and assistance resolving the issue. I followed up by text and email, but I have not received a response. At this point, I have paid for the services and have been left trying to resolve the insurance issue on my own, without the clarification or assistance I requested. I want to be clear that my concern is not simply that an insurance claim was denied. Insurance coverage can be complicated, and I understand that reimbursement is not always guaranteed. My concern is that I specifically asked about TRICARE before hiring, made my decision based on the information provided, and then was unable to get a response when the billing issue came up. She has not been helpful or responsive to this matter and has been curt and rude in earlier response and has ghosted me now that I am trying to resolve this. I recommend that anyone considering hiring Joanne get clear, written confirmation before beginning services about whether she is currently eligible to provide covered services under their specific TRICARE plan, whether the required participation agreement is on file, who is responsible for submitting claims, and what happens if a claim is denied. I would also recommend confirming all payment and reimbursement expectations in writing. I’m sharing this so other families can make an informed decision and avoid finding themselves in a similar situation.

Charlotte was kind, thoughtful, responsive, hands-on when I needed her, and extremely patient and flexible—beyond expectations. Before I gave birth, in the months leading up to my labor, Charlotte came to my home a few times to get to know me, my home, and my birth preferences. Since it was my first pregnancy, she had many thoughts and suggestions for how to prepare and I found her all around competent and thoughtful. Fast forward to my birth experience. I was in labor for three days, and during all three days, she was there for me exactly how I needed her. For the first day, I labored at home and she was available by phone and text until I decided I wanted her in-person support. Once I asked for her to be by my side, she stayed with me for close to 36 hours starting at home and continuing through the time I was at a birth center. After the second day passed, I made a non-emergent transfer to the hospital due to fatigue and dehydration. During this time, we communicated well and I allowed her to go home and take a nap while I got an epidural and took a nap as well. Crazily enough, she was on call for another birth and even wound up attending another birth while I was in the hospital waiting to dilate enough to push. As this happened we stayed in communication and I felt supported enough by her and my midwives over the phone that I didn’t need a backup doula. On the third day, the stars aligned and she wrapped up at her other birth not long before I was ready to push. She rushed to my hospital, and was not only by my side, but encouraged me exactly how I needed and held one leg while a nurse held my other one as I bore down and pushed my little girl out. TLDR; Charlotte is communicative, capable, sympathetic, and experienced. She was an excellent choice as a birth support person and if you are considering her to be your doula, let this be my letter of recommendation.

We couldn’t be more grateful for Maria! Before even hiring her, she listened to our needs and created a great care plan for our 6-week-old. She’s super communicative, transparent with her schedule, and honestly just a total joy to have in our home. Most importantly, she is unbelievably sweet with our baby girl and gives her so much love and attention. We've had to adjust our baby's schedule quite a bit to keep up with her everchanging needs and Maria has been extremely collaborative (and patient) with the process. We can’t recommend Maria and LA Baby Experts enough!
