What's the Cost of Hiring a Lactation Consultant in Gaithersburg, MD?

The cost of a lactation consultant in Gaithersburg, MD, may vary depending on the provider, the type of consultation (in-person or virtual), and the length of the session. Typically, the cost ranges from $150 to $350 for an initial consultation, with follow-up sessions costing less, around $75 to $200. If specific pricing for Gaithersburg is unavailable, the national average for a lactation consultant falls within this range. Some insurance plans may cover part or all of the cost, so it's worth checking with your provider.

The cost of a lactation consultant in Gaithersburg, MD can be influenced by several factors:

  • Type of Certification

International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) typically charge more than Certified Lactation Counselors (CLCs) due to their advanced training and ability to handle complex breastfeeding issues.

  • Visit Type

In-home visits generally cost more than office visits or virtual consultations. Many consultants in Gaithersburg offer telehealth options at reduced rates.

  • Insurance Coverage

Whether insurance covers the cost of a lactation consultant in Gaithersburg, MD, depends on your specific insurance plan and provider. Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), many health insurance plans are required to cover breastfeeding support, counseling, and equipment, which may include services from a lactation consultant. However, coverage details can vary, such as whether the consultant must be in-network or if a referral is needed. It's best to contact your insurance provider directly to confirm coverage, understand any out-of-pocket costs, and verify which lactation consultants are covered in your area.

  • Number of Sessions

Some consultants offer package deals for multiple sessions, which can be more cost-effective than paying per visit, especially for ongoing breastfeeding challenges.

  • HSA and FSA Eligibility

Lactation consulting is an IRS-eligible medical expense, meaning you can use HSA or FSA funds to cover the cost without paying taxes on those dollars.

  • Experience and Specialization

Consultants with specialized expertise in areas like tongue ties, premature infant feeding, or relactation may charge higher rates.

When looking for a lactation consultant in Gaithersburg, MD, it's a good idea to check with your insurance provider first, as many plans cover lactation services. Interview several consultants to find one who fits your needs and budget, and ask about their specific credentials, experience, and what each session includes.

Abbie is so wonderful! We did our first appt at home and a follow up in her office which was so comfortable and welcoming. As a FTM, Abbie helped me get setup for success with regular feeds and pumping. I wasn’t having and “issues” but wanted to be preventative and I’m SO glad I did, I learned so much. Also her follow up notes were detailed which was so helpful referring back to them for different things. Highly recommend!

Sarah Early

18 years of experience
Accepts insurances

Sarah Early has over thirty years of working in the healthcare industry. Her career has taught her about the importance of supporting women with a mind, body, and spirit approach as women learn to care for their health while also addressing their family’s healthcare needs. Sarah worked in a busy Maryland hospital that delivered ten-thousand babies annually and it was here where she began to focus her time on maternal-child care and lactation. During this time, Sarah interacted with countless new parents struggling to feed their newborn and lacking the guidance or resources necessary to do so successfully. These families and their frustrations inspired Sarah to gain the IBCLC credential in 2011 and open Lactation Room in 2014. Lactation Room has been a staple of lactation and infant feeding support in Maryland, Washington D.C., and Virginia for a decade and Sarah and her team of IBCLCs, Registered Nutritionists, Nurses, and Doulas have cared for thousands of families along their new parenting journey. Lactation Room was the first practice in the DMV to expand offerings through insurance and now has three office locations to improve access to care. It was important to Sarah that quality and evidence-based care be attainable and not cost-prohibitive allowing women to receive the care they deserve and need. In 2016 she co-hosted the first collaborative conference for tongue-and-lip ties (TOTS) in the DMV bringing together hundreds of people from multiple disciplines. The conference attendees included IBCLCs, Nurses, Physicians, Feeding Therapists, Bodyworkers, Dentists, and more. Her philosophy is that there are many facets to care, and when the approach is team-based and collaborative, the patients receive better quality care and outcomes. She has presented the collaborative model for infant feeding dysfunction at Simon Says Speech, Talk Tools Speech & Feeding Therapy, Southern Maryland Dental Society, and multiple local hospitals and area organizations. Sarah graduated from a Masters in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner graduate program with high distinction and was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society for Nurses while working and running Lactation Room. Her clinical education and training paved the way for her newest journey in private practice, Peony Women’s Integrative Health, which she opened in 2023. Working as a Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner she serves clients in the DMV. Peony WIH focuses on caring for women with a root-cause, integrative, and functional medicine approach to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. PWIH provides in-office health consults with Sarah, integrative and functional nutrition support by a Registered Dietician, and Craniosacral therapy services. Sarah is focused on addressing the needs of women in the community through a patient-centered and collaborative approach to care. She is an active member of ILCA, USLCA, IATP, AHNA, AANP, and MBC. hello@peonywih.com

As a mother of five, healer, and birthkeeper, I bring over 22 years of experience caring for infants and young children, starting at age 13 when I cared for my nephew. I am dedicated to empowering women through holistic, nurturing, and informed birth experiences. I am the visionary founder of She Who Births All, Inc offering birth planning, herbal wellness, lactation support, and spiritual birth preparation. I also founded Bee Haven Holistic Health and Wellness Clinic, committed to whole-family care from infancy through end-of-life. With training as a Board-Certified Doctor of Natural Medicine (DNM), Doctor of Holistic Health (DHH), and Master Herbalist, I blend ancient wisdom with modern care. Currently, I study midwifery at Mercy In Action College of Midwifery. Whether birthing at home, a center, or hospital, I honor your vision with compassion and holistic support.

Dr. Burton has truly been a life saver for me and my family. After two years of trying to convince myself to seek the right kind of care, I finally found her, and I’m so grateful I did. She cared not only for me, but also for my husband and our two children when she was practicing in Indiana. She was my doula for both my very first birth and my last birth, and I couldn’t have imagined having anyone else by my side. Her presence, guidance, and support made all the difference for me and my family during those sacred milestones. Although I was saddened to hear that she was closing her Indiana location and relocating to the DMV area, I completely understand her decision as she continues advancing her education and completing her clinical preceptorship. While she now focuses specifically on Women’s Health and Maternity, I’m happy to know that I can still continue with her as a Telehealth patient. Meeting Dr. Burton in Indiana was a blessing for our household. Her compassion, knowledge, and dedication to holistic care have made a lasting impact on our health and well being. Even though her practice has shifted, I remain grateful that she was part of our journey and look forward to continuing my care with her in this next chapter.

Tamika was truly exceptional. From the moment we met, her warmth put me completely at ease. I was struggling with milk production after a traumatic delivery, and breastfeeding felt overwhelming. Tamika stepped in with genuine care—making time for me, even doing home visits, and guiding me every step of the way. She would email me notes on our visits with links to websites to help me better with my pumping and whatever else I needed. She was quick to respond to any queries I had about my new born even if it was not related to breastfeeding. She’s incredibly professional but also brings a friendly, comforting vibe that makes you feel supported and understood. She does this work out of love, and it shows in everything she does. It’s rare to find someone so passionate and committed. Her heart is truly in the right place. I honestly don’t know what I would have done without her help. Highly, highly recommend!

Thank you so much for stopping by! My journey to birth work began in 2017, following the birth of my first baby. I have been a fully certified childbirth educator and doula since 2018. Additionally, I recently obtained my Certified Breastfeeding Specialist certificate (CBS) from Lactation Education Resources in October 2025. Prior to getting into birth work, I attended Notre Dame of Maryland University, where I studied biology and graduated with high honors. I have since become a mother of 2. Both of my children were born without intervention and at home. When not working, I can be found reading for pleasure, exercising, doing yoga, hiking, or gardening. I reside in Bowie, MD and serve clients within a 50-mile radius of my home.

Kristen was my doula while I gave birth at George Washington University Hospital in DC. I waited until the last minute to book a Doula, so we only had one prenatal visit and then the actual labor. She was incredibly helpful at the prenatal visit and very attentive to me and my husband’s questions. She has a wonderful personality that is very kind and easy to get along with and you know she’ll make sure your needs are met. She took time to explain methods we would try — I wanted a natural unmedicated birth, and she showed my husband how he could assist and be involved. We also reviewed some exercises and stretches for me to begin preparing with. I had a complication that led to me needing to be induced early (and my birth plan went right out the window of course). We called Kristen once I was 5cm dilated as it happened in about an hour and a half and she got there quickly and stayed with me the rest of the time. Even with an epidural she was able assist me in trying different positions, managing the pain and weathered the 4.5 hours of pushing before I ultimately had to have a C section. She worked wonderfully with the slew of staff that was in and out of our room during that time and advocated for me when the cesarean was first brought up and I was adamant about trying to avoid it. Though it wasn’t the birth I imagined, Kristen was incredibly reaffirming and encouraging to me calming my anxiety of things out of my control. Highly recommend!
