Syllona Kanu

Hi, I’m Syllona. I’m a birth and postpartum doula, childbirth educator, hypnobirthing instructor, and maternal health researcher — centering well-being, equity, and accessibility in all that I do. My approach is trauma-informed and person-centered, drawing on my background in social work and over seven years of experience supporting people through major life transitions. I believe every birthing person and family deserves to feel confident, informed, respected, and empowered throughout their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum journey. When we work together, you’ll receive compassionate, evidence-based support tailored to your needs. I will support you in everything from navigating the medical system to preparing emotionally and physically for birth. My goal is to ensure you feel safe, heard, and deeply supported every step of the way. I have specialized training in supporting birthing people with a history of trauma — including previous birth trauma, sexual or physical violence, or experiences of systemic barriers in care. Together, we’ll hold space for your story and move forward in a way that honours your strength, autonomy, and healing.

Preparing to welcome our first baby while being relatively new in the Netherlands was daunting. Though the country provides excellent prenatal and delivery support, Syllona stood out as an invaluable guide, filling the gaps in our understanding, offering clarity, and providing the emotional support we deeply needed. From the very beginning, Syllona took the time to understand our knowledge, concerns, and expectations. She identified areas where we lacked confidence and equipped us with practical tools, especially for pain management during labor. Her guidance empowered both of us (partner and mom) to approach delivery with confidence, knowing what to expect and how to navigate each step. Syllona’s preparation was thorough and personalized. She helped us define her role and my role as the partner, ensuring we were aligned and ready. When the challenging moment of delivery arrived, her presence was reassuring. She seamlessly stepped in when needed, allowing me to support my partner fully, while she provided expert care and encouragement. Her support didn’t end with delivery. In those exhausting early days, Syllona’s help allowed us to rest, knowing our baby was in loving and capable hands. Those few extra hours of sleep make all the difference :) We truly believe our experience would have been much harder without Syllona. She didn’t just offer support. She helped us navigate the process with confidence and care. We’re so grateful for everything she did during this important time.

Hello expecting families! My name is Char and I am a Birth/Postpartum Doula, Prenatal Yoga Instructor and currently enrolled in a Childbirth Educator course. Ive supported families through the DSABC and DAFGP. I was a community Doula with Indigenous Health (VCH) and was a Pregnancy outreach worker with BFL. I taught in group, focused on 1:1 sessions and supported Prenatal and Postpartum groups. I worked in healthcare for 9-years, mainly in administration. I supported an array of practitioners working with western medicine, holistic and traditional medicine. This experience allows me to work as a supporting bridge between both worlds, whether you are planning a hospital or home birth. How I show up in this work has a lot to do with my upbringing. I really enjoy care taking for mom during birth and postpartum, as I know it such a beautiful but sensitive time. My nurturing care was taught by my late mother, who I think was an unofficial doula herself. I learned how to tend to others through gentle touch, as my mom would give me massages growing up, when the children were unwell. I learned my calming essence from the relaxing environment my mom would create, the sound of soothing music in the morning, the added touches of nature in the home and the smell of incense burning. My love of teaching also ensures that you leave our sessions being informed and hopefully more confident!

Charlene provided the perfect experience and covered all of my needs! She's incredibly prepared to coach through coping measures, keep the environment calm, and provide comfort! When I was at my most vulnerable she still treated me with dignity. She passed no judgment and really helped me get through a difficult time. I'm grateful to have had someone so calm and gentle to be with me on such an important day. I cannot stress enough how amazing she is. Everyone needs a Charlene for their birth experience.

I have been supporting pregnant people for 18 years. I began my journey shortly after my own firstborn came peacefully into this world and the passion was ignited! I studied to be a midwife (CPM) with a number of excellent mentors and qualified in 2011. I have worked in both home and hospital settings as a doula and an excited to now be supporting this community of Clallam County. I am currently only working as a doula (non-clinical support).

Amanda is nothing short of amazing. She served as my doula for our third child, born in 2015 in Kenya. Giving birth seemed daunting at first, but Amanda's confidence, skill, and calm demeanor made everything easier. From the moment that I found out that I was pregnant, she was a source of advice and a trusted confidant, answering my questions and addressing any concerns that I had. When it came time for the birth, our little one was very reluctant to come into this world, but Amanda made the whole experience more positive. She advocated for us with hospital staff and doctors, allowing me to focus on my body and child. Of course, she was also by my side throughout the experience, offering encouragement and even some laughs. After the birth, Amanda continued her high level of care with post-partum wellness checks for both me and baby. We were very grateful to have her with us during this journey. Her dedication to me and our family is still something that I look back on with great fondness.

Joefin Peter

13 years of experience

Hi! My name is Joefin Peter. I am a certified reproductive-spectrum doula (labour/birth, postpartum, fertility, loss/abortion) & sexual health educator. When we say it takes a village to raise a child, we often forget that it actually takes a village to support new parents. I hope to be a part of your community! In my opinion, creating community starts with a "home away from home". I have a passion for supporting diasporic families, third-culture kids, and immigrants like myself. My specialty is blending science and cultural practices. Racialized individuals can feel isolated and helpless as a result of immigration, acculturation, and individualization. These feelings are then magnified when dealing with sexual & reproductive health. This is where I come in! I aim to be a reliable source of education, support, and comfort. I operate from a feminist, anti-oppressive, and trauma-informed lens.

We feel incredibly lucky to have had Joefin as our doula by our side during this journey.During the prenatal phase, she spent quality time walking us through different scenarios both smooth and challenging that could arise on delivery day. This helped us feel mentally prepared and confident. She also explained the doula guide in detail with practical examples and worked closely with me to create a clear and thoughtful birth plan.On the day of delivery, she arrived at the hospital at 5 AM and was an absolute pillar of support during active labour. She worked seamlessly alongside the nurses and guided me through various birthing positions, constantly adapting to what would help most. She was very attentive to my well-being and offered real-time suggestions that made a big difference.Postpartum, she visited us again, spent time with the baby, clicked some beautiful pictures with us, and shared practical tips on handling a newborn. Most importantly, she reassured us and instilled confidence that we were doing well as new parents. Her calm presence, knowledge, and genuine care made this entire experience so much more positive for us. We couldn’t have asked for a better support system.

Aeran Jung

Hi, I’m Aeran, a birth and postpartum doula who speaks both English and Korean. As a mother of five, I bring not only my training and experience but also the deep empathy and understanding that comes from living through the joys and challenges of parenthood myself. I am passionate about supporting families throughout pregnancy, birth, and the early postpartum days, offering care that is both practical and heartfelt. I walk alongside parents with a calm, faith-centered approach, believing that every birth is a sacred and God-given moment. I aim to meet each family where they are, listening closely to your needs and helping you find what truly works for you. Every birth is unique, and I believe it deserves to be met with respect, compassion, and a sense of peace. Being present during a birth is one of life’s most beautiful and meaningful experiences, and I feel deeply honoured to support families during this life-changing time.

In 2016, when I gave birth to my first child, I want to share with you all how much help my dear friend Aeran was to me. At the time, I was living in the Surrey area and going through my pregnancy and birth journey with a midwife. Through my midwife, I learned about doula services and had already signed up for one. On the day I went into labor, mild contractions turned into active labor, and I immediately informed both my doula and my closest friend, Aeran—who had already experienced childbirth herself several times. (At that time, she was not a doula yet, but a very experienced birth “senior.”) When my contractions became less than 10 minutes apart, we headed to the hospital, and that was when the indescribable pain truly began. Even after arriving at the hospital, after a total of 17 hours of labor, I was finally able to hold my baby through a natural birth. (Halfway through, the pain became unbearable, and I did receive an epidural.) To be honest, the pain was so intense that my memories from that time are not very clear. Yet, the moments that remain vividly with me are almost all memories of Aeran caring for me so attentively. My husband and the doula were also by my side and did their best to support me, but throughout those long hours, Aeran stayed awake the entire night without sleeping even once (while my husband and the doula did manage to rest briefly). She constantly reassured me emotionally, telling me I was doing well, helped calm me down, massaged me wherever I needed, and took care of everything I required. And when my baby was finally born after that long and exhausting labor, the person who cried with joy—almost more than I did—was Aeran. (Sorry to my husband and the doula at the time, but I honestly don’t remember much about them;;;) As an immigrant, I gave birth without my own mother being able to come to Canada yet to help me. In that moment, Aeran played a role far greater than that of a mother. In fact, I don’t believe anyone else could have cared for me so devotedly throughout the entire night without any rest. So when I later heard that Aeran had decided to formally study and pursue the path of becoming a doula, I was truly overjoyed and cheered for her, knowing it was such a wonderful decision. I am deeply confident that her natural character, the way she treats people, and her strong sense of calling and passion for her work will shine beautifully in her role as a doula. Anyone who has experienced her doula services—whether as a mother or as a family member—will know that there is not a single exaggeration in what I have written here. I sincerely hope that this story helps someone who is reading this as they make their own choice.

My path to becoming a doula began with my own births. As a mother, I have experienced how deeply birth can shape a woman. My last birth, supported by a doula, showed me the quiet power of being held without judgment, without pressure, just steady, present support. It changed everything for me. I have attended seven births so far, each one strengthening my respect for this work and deepening my calling to walk alongside women as they welcome new life. I have completed my doula training through Douglas College, where I developed the knowledge and skills to provide thoughtful, informed, and compassionate care. I believe birth is not something to be feared, but something to be witnessed and supported through. A doula holds that space, grounded and aware, so the mother can let go. With one foot in the conscious world, we create safety, allowing her to turn inward, trust herself, and fully enter the experience. In that space, she returns to herself. She rises into her instinctive, powerful nature. This is the heart of my work. I am committed to practicing cultural safety and honoring every client’s unique background, beliefs, and lived experience. My goal is to create a space where you feel respected, heard, and fully supported, exactly as you are. I am there to hold steady, to protect the space, and to support you as you move through one of the most defining moments of your life. Through pregnancy, birth, postpartum, and loss, my role is to ensure you feel seen, safe, and supported every step of the way. You can expect calm presence, emotional support, and gentle guidance when you need it most. You will always have someone in your corner. I am committed to continually deepening my knowledge and learning new techniques to better support both mother and baby.
