My journey to becoming a doula started with my own birth in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic! In addition to the new strict covid regulations— I was also told the devastating news that I was at high risk for preterm labor. I started researching and reaching out to other birth professionals for advice while doing everything I possibly could to prevent preterm birth. By God’s Grace, I birthed my baby girl at full term! Through my experience, I realized the importance of doulas. My pregnancy and birth awoke a deep desire to be a doula myself. So, I followed my heart! I would describe myself as a dedicated and passionate birth and postpartum doula with a background in student midwifery and student nursing. With a calling in my heart from a young age, my journey began when I attended Washington Adventist University to study BS nursing in 2013. During my studies, I discovered a missionary school that offered a doula certificate program and Midwifery course, which sparked my interest and led me to pursue my true passion. Hello, my name is Sherri, and I am a self-proclaimed Birth Nerd! I was born with a love for all things birth related. My passion increased after working in healthcare for over 20 years as a National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and IV infusionist in busy Rheumatology and OB/GYN practices. I started my master’s program in 2014 and earned my degree in Health Education and Health Promotion in 2016. That same year, I become a Health Education Specialist with a focus in maternal and fetal health and human lactation. Shortly thereafter, with continued coursework, a Doula was born. I have been a Doula for family and friends for many years, so naturally I wanted to share this passion with other birthers in the world. As a young child, I found my way to birth before I had language for it. At five years old, I was guiding my dolls through labor, sitting with them, speaking softly, staying close. I didn’t understand what I was doing then, but something in me already knew. There was a quiet pull toward women in this moment of becoming. As I grew older, that pull deepened. I became fascinated by the power held in pregnancy, birth, and the early days after. The way a body carries, protects, and nourishes life. The way a baby makes their way into the world. The way a mother changes forever once they meet. It felt sacred, ancient, and deeply familiar. I often imagined myself surrounded by ancestors and loved ones, witnessing prayers and dreams taking form as new life arrived. What followed birth felt just as powerful to me. Watching a mother soften and strengthen at the same time. Watching intuition awaken. Watching love root itself in ways that cannot be taught. Mothers and babies choosing one another. A love story that begins again and again. For years, I was visited by dreams. Women from all walks of life birthing their babies. In each dream, I was there. Holding hands. Offering comfort. Showing up in a way understood only by women and the spirits who have always walked with us. The dreams didn’t stop until I finally listened. I became a certified birth and postpartum doula and stood alongside more than two hundred families. I have been a sister, an aunt, a steady presence in moments of fear, release, and joy. I’ve wiped tears, celebrated feeding breakthroughs, and watched parents grow into themselves. Since 2015, I have served clients as a Birth and Postpartum Doula. In 2021, I became an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I have served over 80 clients having vaginal births after caesarean (VBAC)  planned/unplanned C-sections, vaginal medicated and unmedicated births. I assisted close to 150 families as a postpartum doula, helping them adjust to parenthood with daytime or nighttime visits. I love assisting at births but the greatest joy for me is postpartum work. Families are under prepared for the changes that come during the first 3 months after birth. Having a guide makes the 4th trimester much smoother.
