In college, a course called Pregnancy and Power opened my eyes to the realities of the U.S. maternal healthcare system and the consequences of highly medicalized childbirth. Hearing doulas and midwives speak about their work and the purpose behind it sparked something deep in me. I had never felt more aligned with a calling. Following that pull, I completed my birth and postpartum doula certification through Bini Birth in Sherman Oaks. Learning from Kathrin Auger and Ana Paula Markel only affirmed that this is the work I am meant to do. On a more personal levelI love being outdoors, cooking and creating a safe and healthy environment through both creativity and knowledge. My life is also been deeply shaped by resilience. During Hurricane Katrina, while at a family reunion, my family suffered complete devastation losing eight homes. Despite this tragedy, I felt compelled to help. I was deputized by the Red Cross And remain in Louisiana for three months where I developed and lead a disaster assessment team specializing in logistics, a system still in use today. Strangely enough this experience is what first led me into caregiving a career where it is I have never felt more alive or purposeful.
