My path to becoming a doula was forged during a deeply personal experience, as I navigated the challenges of healing my own womb from an ovarian cyst. Faced with the possibility of losing an ovary and the potential inability to have more children, I turned to holistic remedies and the power of herbs. Through this transformative journey, I not only healed myself but also discovered a profound calling to share the knowledge I gained with other women of color who often face similar struggles with womb health. Driven by this newfound purpose, I embarked on a mission to become a holistic fertility doula. As I delved into the realm of fertility, I uncovered not only the prevalence of womb health issues among women of color but also the systemic disparities and injustices they face in their pregnancy and delivery experiences. This revelation ignited a fire within me to advocate for fair treatment and support for all mothers-to-be.

While studying at UCLA, I fell in love with maternal and fetal health. My background in human biology laid the foundation for my knowledge of perinatal health and the social and environment factors that can impact one's birth experience. My additional background in art and architecture also informs my practice, inspiring the kinds of embodied experiences I want to guide clients through. My approach as a doula is rooted in science, continuous learning, and education. I believe that understanding your body and your clinical and non-clincal options can reduce fear, build confidence, and support true self-advocacy in any setting. I will never tell you how you should birth, but I will support you in discovering what feels right for you. My hope is that you feel wholey and completely yourself during this incredible moment! I trained at Bini Birth in Sherman Oaks in Spring 2025 and am currently working toward certification through DONA International. I serve as a Member-at-Large on the Board of the Doulas Association of Southern California (DASC), and I volunteer as a birth doula with Joy in Birthing Foundation and Harvest Home in Los Angeles.

My name is Sandra Luz Alvarado and I am a postpartum doula and a Newborn Care Specialist. I was born in El Salvador and came to California 35 years ago. I am a wife (I have been with my husband almost 30 years!) and a mother to 5 beautiful children, including my youngest, who is three years old. Before becoming a doula, I worked as a graphic designer, elder care provider, and nanny. Some years back I decided to become a postpartum doula. I was interested in expanding my knowledge about infants, while supporting new mothers at the same time.
