I spent most of my young life in Guangzhou, China where my family cared for orphaned newborns. After high school I found a maternity clinic in the Philippines offering midwifery training and began my journey there. After completing an accelerated program, I moved to California and became licensed with the Medical Board of CA. I worked in birth centers to gain further experience, then stepped fully into my own homebirth practice where my passion lies. I love homebirth. Ever since Jessica can remember, she has followed her calling to care for others. She knew from a young age that she wanted to be a nurse, and she has never deviated from that path. When she was able to formally follow her passion, she volunteered at CHOC hospital while in high school to care for sick infants. Jessica was accepted into the rigorous five- year nursing program at San Francisco State University, and was one of the 50% of remaining nursing students that successfully earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and passed her Board Exams to be licensed as a registered nurse. While enrolled in her rigorous courses at SFSU, she also became certified as a doula and donated her time to work with low- income families and assist women in the prison population at their births. Jessica’s experience during clinicals at different hospitals in the Bay Area made her question some of the traditional protocols that hospitals use, such as intervention in all births, even those that are at low risk. She began to explore other options, and was hired as an intern at The Sanctuary and Birth Center in Los Angeles. After graduating from SFSU. Jessica sought a practical balance and applied to and was accepted into the Nizhoni Institute of Midwifery where she learned and practiced a holistic approach to childbirth. During this 2 ½ year program, she was on call 24/7 for births, prenatal, and postpartum visits that were sandwiched in between her coursework. Jessica graduated, passed her Board Exams, and is a CPM-LM- Certified Professional Midwife and Licensed Midwife. Jessica has participated in more than 145 home births, and over 200 hospital births; she is well acquainted with the protocols of both. Jessica believes that in order to be the best midwife for her clients, she must be as educated and knowledgeable as possible, which led Jessica to complete courses in the Women's Health Nurse Practitioner and Midwifery program at Georgetown University. Jessica continues to further her education by staying up to date on advances in the health care field, and continue her studies at Frontier Nursing University. Jessica has officially graduated with a Master's of Science in Nursing with honors. Jessica’s ultimate goal is to combine the benefits of both western and eastern medical practices to her patients. I was inspired to become a midwife in the first delivery room I ever entered. My own! The experience lit a fire in me that I knew would have to burn long and low as my attention was focused on my new baby. While still nursing him I undertook training to become a doula. I knew I wanted to be a midwife, but with a young son of my own, I was not ready at that time for the huge educational commitment. I was a practicing doula for 4 years before I was ready to take the next step. I wanted the chance to make more of a difference. I knew that the hospital nurses could influence a birth powerfully, as they had with mine. Becoming a labor and delivery nurse was my chance to make other women’s birth experiences more positive. Before going to nursing school I had a second son- this time in the care of loving midwives Connie and Tai at the Hollywood Birth Center on Sunset Boulevard. After an immersive two year program, I became a registered nurse at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in their labor and delivery department, where I had the opportunity to learn among the best. I loved my job so much that after my next birth- twin boys, I chose to remain at Cedars-Sinai for another 10 years. During the time I was a nurse I was honored to meet and work with the legendary CNM Debbie Frank who had the first hybrid home/ hospital private midwifery practice in Los Angeles- mine was the second. She was the inspiration for my future practice model. In 2015, with the unwavering support of my loving husband and father of my five amazing boys, I decided it was time to take the next step to becoming a certified nurse-midwife. I began to assist midwives at home births and then embarked on the final leg of my journey to midwifery, the 3-year bridge to Masters degree program at Frontier Nursing University. As much as I enjoy supporting families to birth at home, I saw there was a need in our community for a private hospital based midwifery practice that upheld the hallmarks of midwifery. I decided to be the change I wanted to see and applied for hospital privileges. I am thrilled to be a midwife and so honored to be able to continue to serve women in the setting of their choice, whether it be their home, or one of the best hospitals in Los Angeles. My mother was a Lamaze instructor who taught childbirth classes in our home, surrounding me with the language, rhythm, and wonder of pregnancy and birth from an early age. As the eldest of four siblings and 16 grandchildren, I grew up surrounded by babies, witnessing the magic of new life, and developing a deep-rooted sense of awe and normalcy around the birthing process. The births of my own children lit a spark in me, and that spark grew into a calling. I became a doula and gained extensive experience supporting families birthing in homes, birth centers, and hospitals across Los Angeles. Over time, my passion for this sacred work deepened, and I felt the undeniable pull to expand my knowledge and commitment to birthing families by becoming a midwife. Through years of study, apprenticeship, and dedication, I graduated from the National Midwifery Institute. I am a Licensed Midwife (LM) with the Medical Board of California and Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) with the North American Registry of Midwives. I carry certifications in neonatal resuscitation, CPR, and Basic Life Support (BLS) and have had the privilege of supporting hundreds of families on their birthing journey's.
